I am not defending the soft zone approach. I understand it to some degree, but it still drives me nuts. I am just passing along info as to why he is playing it that way now, why he played it that way last year (Pre-Von), and why it was different late last year. And also hoping that it points to help at Edge by the trade deadline.

Very few interceptions (bottom 10) and sacks (again bottom 10) - it is not working as well as it could be

D lost Von Miller, a serious difference maker and is giving up 16 points a game.
D has been excellent. Some can say it is because of Morris. Others can say it is despite Morris. That is opinion. Fact is most important stat on D is points allowed.
AD's numbers are far from his best this year. Is that because he's not playing as well or because he is doing what it takes to limit points.
I believe it's the latter.

Sure.

I’d just think Rams fans would be paying attention to their team.

They have a shit pass rush and have had turmoil in the secondary… and have done well.

People post about Morris playing soft without any acknowledgment of context.

And we haven’t even talked about playing low-risk because the offense can’t get into a shootout.

Morris showed what he can and will do when properly equipped.
He’s No Fangio, but he’s a good coach.

I’m just disappointed in Rams fans who are in such a hurry to tear down one of the team’s coaches that they’ll ignore the track record.

Giving up 16 per game, in the modern NFL, you should win every game.
When/if the offense can take some pressure off of the defense and take a couple of possession a game away from opponents or make them one dimensional, we will see the pressures and turn overs that tend to come with that.
The Rams are using the defense in a smart way, given their injuries.
With people coming back in the secondary I hope we see some more varied looks depending on the opponent.

Then this very good defense would be a great defense and I think we have the players to accomplish that if we didn't play soft on 95% of the plays before we get inside the 30 yard line.

And change up from soft to aggressive on the first or second downs occasionally.

My point is that you’re questioning a strategy without giving much thought to context.

You want aggression for aggression’s sake without really considering what the downsides are. You only present the benefits.

I really disagree with this.

I have thought about context and I believe that we can play more aggressive even with the injuries that have occurred and the possible downside. I think at worst with the players we have that we might give up a 20 yard pass play from time to time which will be offset by more sacks and interceptions.

Right now the better QBs and the 5 yard specialist (I am looking at you Krapola) will be able to drive down the field and get FGs at worst. Even Murray was able to drive down the field with short passes.

But I do want to stress that I am extremely impressed with Morris once the other team does pass the 30 yard line. We have excellent red zone defenses. It helps that Morris has to be more aggressive once we get in the red zone.

I personally believe that Morris could be aggressive on the other side of the field with his skills to deny the offense. But he is too timid to implement it at this time. You need to believe in your players especially if they are playing well for the most part.

Perhaps.
But that would also mean giving up more big plays....which the offense can't make up for at this point.
When the O gets efficient again I think we will see more variety from the D.

The Rams offense has run a lot of plays the first 6 games. They are averaging 62 or 63 plays a game. Explosive plays are the main issue for the Team at this point. Get Tutu and Van on the field and let's get over the top of this Niner D

Agreed. Everyone knows Morris is playing the type defense he is is to project our young, inexperienced corners from getting torched-and it has been very effective.

I think the question becomes that when we play the likes of Cooper Rush or Jimmy G should be just let them dink and dunk us to death or do we unleash the blitz once in a while to try and cause a turnover. Looking at both QBs above I would say the latter. Either QB is more likely to panic and throw a 5-yd Hail Mary INT-see Jimmy G last week, vs completing a 50 yard bomb.

Now, if the QB is a Rogers, Brady or Mahomes the narrative is obviously different.

I would still be aggressive from time to time against those guys but probably a lot less than I would be against Rush and Krapola

Thank you for hammering home the fact that you can’t factor in the downside.

In your mind, there are only rewards for being aggressive… with no real appreciation for the downside.

I love aggressive play… I love winning more.

The Rams aren’t giving up many points on D. I don’t care if it doesn’t look great.

Being tough is much more important to me than looking tough.
