@dieterbrock @Merlin

After such a tumultuous time at Ohio State McCord wasn't statistically as bad as it seemed maybe.
Here is the ESPN QBR from 2023 @ Ohio State, I know, I know another grain of salt comparison but!!

I'll be the first to say that Kyle still has too many drives where he seems off, However, it seems like this is year where there are very few truly elite QBs, and Kyle may still actually be one of the best? I was taking a look at ESPN's total QBR, and he's ahead of some notable guys that I bet a lot of us would trade for. Obviously it's just one version of a total QB ranking, but it's a good reminder that a lot of fanbases are cursing their QB situation right now too.

  1. J.J. McCarthy (MICH) - 93.6
  2. Michael Penix (WASH) - 91.6
  3. Dillon Gabriel (OU) - 91.0
  4. Jayden Daniels (LSU) - 90.1
  5. Conner Weigman (TA&M) - 87.7
  6. Kyle McCord (OSU) - 86.6
  7. DJ Uiagalelei (ORST) - 86.5
  8. Caleb Williams (USC) - 86.2
  9. Drake Maye (UNC) - 85.8
  10. Tyler Van Dyke (MIA) - 84.5 ... 15: Quinn Ewers (TEXAS) - 81.1 ... 21: Drew Allar (PSU) - 75.2
For discussion purposes, I'll note that CJ's full-season QBR last year was 87.7.

I think one of these Tier 3 guys is going to hit, just a gut.
He wasnt statistically terrible, he just wasnt very good. May have just been the game plan but he was so locked in to MHjr that Egbuka was a mostly non factor. Again, different OC but the drop off from Stroud to McCord was dramatic as was the improvement with Howard
Just a different QB in '24.
I guess the question with him is which version do you get?

It could be to get teams to try to trade ahead of them so it pushes better talent back. It could also be to make teams think they seriously want a QB and need a more persuasive offer to give up their intent of using the #26 pick on said QB.
That's a bit of a stretch, it's not like showing interest will push multiple players there way, at best maybe 1? If Dart goes, then maybe somebody moves up for Milroe?
And again, why make a more persuasive offer to them when 5 of the 6 teams in front of them already have a QB? The Rams would be the last team you'd try and deal with if you were afraid they wanted the same player as you

All the same media folks, draft gurus. Hindsight says otherwise but going in to the draft it was considered a strong QB draft
I don't remember people saying that, in fact I remember quite a few people saying how there weren't perfect prospects and everyone had problems: Young - size, Richardson - playing time, Stroud - lack of creativity, robotic, Levis - needs to sit

Maybe there are just a lot of random yahoos out there saying things?* I don't know man, I struggle sometimes when we have these convos cause I feel like I'm really missing something.

*Also, all the same media folks. Come on, you can do better than that. "People have been saying..."

McCord is the guy I think could surprise.
He is athletic enough but is a pocket passer, I read hasn't been playing the position a long time, He will trust his arm a little too much.
Physically he isn't exceptional lower mid to mid pack in Measurables - HT, WT, Hand Size, 40 and Span, these are some of the reasons he is slotted where he is

His ability to extend plays is still an unknown but hasn't shown a positive yet
Gets a bit nervous under pressure and mechanics suffer
Can take a beat too long to make reads (locks On)
Throws from really only 1 position (no arm angle adjustment)

I Like him end of day to top of 3 but somebody may have a crush on him. I think with McVay & Stafford around him he "could" become a quality starter
makes sense, nevermind, eh....

They were predicting as many as 5 1st round QB's, 4 top 10-15
It was considered a strong qb draft after the weak '22 draft that only had Pickett go 1st round
Narrative changed after the fact of course with Young and Richardson being busts so far, and Levis fell like a stone
Alas, it was what it was and now is viewed for what it is.
Just like this year's draft, could end up with a couple starters and will be miraculously looked back as a draft many thought had a lot of potential. Lol

I hope the Rams aren’t considering a QB at 26 because it will be an overdraft. But is it likely that they’d telegraph their intentions to the rest of the league?

Well, I dont think they necessarily are. McVay just said recently that he hadnt even looked at the QB's, So any of these recent conversations could just be due diligence.

Yes one thing we know is this shit is an inexact science. So get Coach in a room with these guys and see if he vibes with any of them. If you like the film and he and Coach connect well then go get him and let the media and complainers cry about it.

I’d expect they’ll trade down if possible and try and catch lightning in a bottle at QB later in the draft. They might figure if you can upgrade on Bennett, you are a little better. Or they might trade up and grab one early and blow all our minds.

I’m drawn to the #33 (e.g. Egbuka) thru 75 (e.g. Royals) range of prospects. So I’d prefer 2 of those vs 1 at R1.26.

This draft is most definitely not one where we should be looking to trade up (unless Hunter somehow falls within reach).

Had Mahomes played at Alabama he would have easily been the 1st overall pick. Texas Tech is not Bama.
Thats a silly statement. Texas Tech threw the ball all over the place, had he gone to Alabama he might not even get a chance to start. Was only a 3 star recruit out of High School. He was in the right place at the right time and got drafted by the right coach

Think the right coach thing really makes a difference though probably less so with Mahomes talent.

I know you know I don't want Dart before the end of the 3rd but if we were to take him and even take him higher, I'll be curious with what McVay can do with him or any other young QB for that matter. From what I've heard, McVay is very hard on QBs and it'll be interesting to see him bring along a young guy who isn't Goff. I imagine whomever we pick will have to be able to take hard coaching as I don't think McVay can just coach up any QB such as a guy who needs a softer hand. Interestingly, sounds like Dart could take coaching like that.

I am guessing if he is there at 26 they might take him. If not I have a feeling they will take Howard, McCord, or Ewers in rd 3 or 4. Starting to think Ewers might be a strong possibility based on arm talent alone.

If it comes to that, hopefully they can trade back from 26 and add an extra top 100 pick or two, then use one of those on a QB.
