This from earlier today...I was of the mind after 2020 that the Rams ought to improve the OL and give Goff another shot to see if he could get back to the '17-'18 version.

The Lions have done that for him and he is flourishing it appears.

Doesn't mean I'd be in on getting in the time-machine and un-doing the trade but it is an interesting question.

I’ll keep bringing this up.. the Rams could build the Roster needed because he was on a rookie deal.
Lions had built the structure to drop in a QB at his price and become fairly successful.

That would be your first choice? Seems biased for all the all time greats you could have picked from.

Matthew Stafford had triple crown winner and OBJ for the first half before he got hurt but not before contributing a TD. And our second most productive WR in 2021 was still on the field. Which top two options did he lose? Didn’t even lose the first…
It came to mind quickly because it was 10 months ago and because we as Rams fans know better than anyone how epic it was considering all that had to be overcome.

Both Rams QB’s needed a TD in the biggest game. Second half in particular in both games. Losing and no run game.

Staff had Kupp, Jefferson, rookie Sko, scrub TE’s and zero run game. Also had a defense that was playing well but not dominating.

I’d have to go back and look at the 2018 post season depth chart, but I’m pretty sure Goff had Cooks, Woods, Higbee, Reynolds and a largely ineffective run game. He did have an outstanding defensive performance for support. Missing Kupp was brutal obviously but it’s not like he was throwing to scrubs and backups.

Are we not on the same page here? What Stafford did was fairly epic. Goff didn’t get it done. Goff had more to work with.

Are you still addressing the hypothetical post or forcing old arguments on me? It seems more like you’re attempting to prove Stafford>Goff which is fine but very out of context for this conversation and even the one I had with Merlin prior.

Stafford didn’t do what you said he did…the part you responded to my quote about…winning a Super Bowl down his top 2 weapons (nor do I think we win that game without Kupp but that’s just my opinion)Didn’t happen no matter how you slice it. Doesn’t take anything away just not a valid response to my question

Stafford had his top option for 3 quarters of a game plus an injured Jefferson, plus a 4th string TE, plus an utterly useless run game.

Goff didn’t have Kupp. The Rams had an excellent run game, but the Patriots shut it down…. At least, in part, because they didn’t think Goff could beat them. McVay also laid an egg.

I think I’m missing your point

*edit*

I realize that might have come off way more aggressive than I wanted it to. I just genuinely didn’t understand what you were getting at

No big point and no offense taken. I think Stafford had a worse situation, overall. That’s it.

That’s a fair take and I’ll Admit I’ve taken the bait a bit into comparing who played better in their respective Super Bowl which is how you and I ended up here.

In reality my original point can be boiled down to
“Goff can get you to a Super Bowl”

and

“Losing your top 2 weapons and still having success is not something I’d be confident in regardless of the QB”

In fact I didn’t even mention Staffords name

History is history, but last season Rams had a lot of HOF players that helped The Rams get over the top. That is not naming a QB,but then again he is going to be a HOF QB. The other QB for The Rams that didn’t win it all has a long career ahead of him.
If he ever wins won? Who knows.

Nick Foles was a Rams QB who got cut & was a MVP Super Bowl QB who beat the GOAT.I hope he has a good game for INDY.

IMO we can count all the draft picks that could or will help a team to improve with core players.

I say Shoni others say Justice.I’ll say I appreciate a FOREVER team player. Trout isn’t one of them.

What does winning mean.Bryce Harper. Alex Bregman is a winner

I didn’t see the game but your comment prompted me to look at the box score and Goff was their leading rusher? :laugh4: That’s got to be a first for him

The lions could still get it

They need to win their last 2 and Washington needs to lose one of two and Seattle needs to lose one of two (since Detroit lost to Seattle)

So will Stafford. I still can’t believe our FO didn’t get the other half of the puzzle to the Staff acquisition was a strong OL and run game. I really hope that light finally comes on this off-season.
If the FO doesn’t figure out they need to fix the OL they should all be fired or possibly even drawn and quartered.

Matt Stafford?
He had no run game and one guy to throw too. I’d say that qualifies.
Even when you throw in the coaches? Sorry but not being able to run against that Bengals team is the Rams fault. Not running against Bellicheat in the Super Bowl is something thing that's common. Add in against the Bengals McVay has learned the lessons supposedly that BB taught him by out coaching him and they should have run all over the Bengals which they never were going to against the Patriots.

I went on record that Goff actually played well in 2019 and was a big reason why we almost made the playoffs. His numbers that year are deceiving because McVay ran the ball so much in the red zone. However, what did Goff in was his terrible performance in 2020. There are no excuses for how bad he was for a good chunk of that year.

that's easy to answer.

mcvay became obsessed with unscheduled plays. it was all he would talk about every week. as his offense became worked out by dcs around the league it placed more onus on the qb to make something out of nothing.

goff is the antithesis of the unscheduled play qb. he can run the play that's called but if it breaks down he can throw the ball away or take the sack. in 2020 mcvay wanted him to make some unscheduled plays. he couldn't do it. the more mcvay pushed the worse goff played as he began to make some horrible decisions trying these unscheduled plays. his fumble against the whiners and his int against the seafucks are two that come to mind. and i think it irked mcvay that goff didn't work as hard as he did to better himself and, thus, the team.

so out went goff and in came the master of unscheduled plays, matt stafford. stafford made mcvay a better coach because he could pick up the slack in mcvay's offense. sure he looked horrible in some games but when he was on the mcvay offense was unstoppable. all mcvay needed to do was ensure stafford was ready to play. if he was the rams couldn't lose. and so they ended up winning the superbowl.

.

Yeah that fathom Holding call on John Sullivan towards the end of the 3rd period in 0-3 football game.

IMO at that point Todd Gurley was feeling no pain? He finally had a 10 yard run & crossed the 50(45). Now you put Goff in a 1-20 on his own 35.

Talk about a game changer.I won’t say a couple passes to Cooks was PI,but those were very catchable passes.

You don’t think OBJ’s TD meant much to giving Stafford confidence ? Goff would have made that throw. Then again ,I’m not here to defend either QB.
I will say I hope Nick Foles has a good game & glad Detroit lost.I liked the way Baker Mayfield has played as a Ram.
