I hate Green Bay for this idea of sitting a not ready for primetime QB behind a guy to learn. Outside of maybe Love and maybe Josh Allen, name the vast number of sucky rookie QB's who have been rehabilitated? I don't consider Goff as being eligible for this because McVay was directing him at all times in those early years and eventually gave up on him. Giving up any draft picks for this guy would be a waste to me.

Ignore the distraction of a Goff discussion and talk about rehabilitated QB's who have been worth a damn.

This guy looks lost, the hardest pass ever. Nope.
Jared Freaking Goff, a fine quarterback with big time NFL arm was not good enough or smart enough for Sean McVay.
No way this guy is.
The type of quarterback Stafford is my type of quarterback. He wins BIG games with his brains, toughness, huge arm and GIANT balls.
Keep building around him until he decides he has had enough.
What we need is our LT to stay on the field or find the next Big Whitt.

Sitting a rookie QB use to be the norm.

There are back ups that have had good careers as starters once they were ready.
Rich Gannon, Brad Johnson and Kurt Warner are examples.

I fixed the spelling of roll/role but you should consider putting that on T-shirts and coffee mugs.

Not really what I was talking about.
A blue chip rookie riding the pine until he's ready to supplant the old guy starter is different. I'm talking about the rookie disappointments, many of which have been demoted to the bench.
Kurt Warner had served in three leagues as he developed. I believe he was almost a finished product when he reached the Rams from NFL Europe, but the coaches didn't trust him because of his pedigree and that's why they went and got Trent Green.
Rich Gannon and Brad Johnson were guys that were just asked to not screw things up. I think they were system guys, not even close to the level of Warner. Jim Plunkett would also be in this group.
Besides, if this was really a thing, why can't we name 20 such guys?

Not sure I would label Rich Gannon a “system qb”

...man, how could Carolina pick this kid #1 overall?? wasn't even that great in AL in 2022. At 5'-10", he needs to be Russell Wilson or better, for a #1 overall pick -- which Russell was a 3rd round unicorn.
C.J. Stroud, 6'-3" from Ohio State... how can you pick Bryce Young over C.J.?? Did Bryce just have amazing highlights? even if he did, playing college QB & NFL is completely different.
...man, #1 overall pick. Can't be too critical tho, as good as Bradford was, he was a statue in the pocket. Couldn't lead a receiver. Both things I could clearly see (and I'm no football expert by any means) from his OU highlights, where he took all snaps from shotgun & just stood there while his #1 O-line made a wall of stone around him so he could take 8 - 10 s to throw a pass. Was never gonna work in the NFL.
Fast fwd to Goff, and you could see the accuracy & ability to pass, I'd have easily taken him over Wentz.
But, Bryce?? anyone know why?

Yeah, every early pick QB is expected to start immediately.
I don’t think it’s a great idea, but it’s how today’s NFL works.
Even Mahomes had the opportunity to sit and learn for a year.

Even Blue chip prospects should be given time to learn in some cases.
I’m not saying Young will be the guy. I’m just comparing him to players that were able to sit and learn the position at NFL speed before becoming starters.

Here's my thinking on Bryce;
We have seen quarterbacks that played for Carolina start and win consistently lately with other teams
Namely Darnold and Mayfield.
I think the kid was ruined by playing for so many different coaches in so many different offenses and then throwing him to the wolves immediately as a starter.
The usual thought process is you have to give a high number one to get a starting quarterback.
Here's an opportunity *possibly* to get one for a second or third rounder.
He was absolutely recruited to be a Kyler Murray type QB.
You know, the Kyler Murray that just embarrassed us.
To me it's worth a shot to have him learn behind Stafford and grow up a little bit with a consistent offense. Just my opinion.

What other options do we really have.
I would bet anything that it's something McSnead is mulling over.
I think the only really super valid point is the one about his rookie contract being something we can't handle.

Mahomes is a blue chip player that never gave up his starting position after gaining it. I think the jury is out with sitting even these guys. Andy Reid is an old school coach, as was Jeff Fisher. Fish sat Goff for several games if memory serves. When Goff actually started that year, he sucked because the team sucked. McVay came in with Andrew Whittworth and veteran John Sullivan at Center to make calls about coverages. Goff was improved because protection and weapons were better with McVay in his ear every play. I think McVay may have improved Goff's confidence, but I don't know how much he improved in skills/ability wise. Mahomes sat and watched, but he was already a HOFer under the rookie costume, imo. He was what he was already going to me, I think.

I just don’t think it’s fair to grade every high draft pick as if they are Mahomes or Stroud.

P. Manning and Aikmen were both garbage their rookie years.

Manning and Aikman had the tools to rise above that first year, imo.

Of course, right now, the optics are that he's not an NFL QB.

But, let McVay have dinner with BY in Los Cabos (Stafford), sit next to him on a long flight (Mayfield) or otherwise check out BY and see what coach says. Really, I think it's about what McVay thinks is between BY's ears that matters.

If McVay wants him, we get him. If McVay says no go, it's no go.
