Crazy contract. It remains to be seen how it affects the cap down the road. I love watching AD play on the Rams. I’m glad they got it done but does this mean Gaines and AShawn are goners next winter along with a few other starters?

It will be interesting to see how the Rams manage to continue to be a playoff team after this year. A lot of youngsters will have to develop quickly.
Gaines AND Robinson are unlikely to both be gone. One of them is very likely to be gone.
The Rams have a contract and draft pattern at that position.
Something that COULD change that? If someone like Copeland makes another big jump. But I think they’ll keep Gaines.

It will definitely be a bummer, but Father Time is undefeated. When it does happen, I hope he retires for good, because I would much rather see him retire from us than to go somewhere else, even if he's a diminished AD.

Now finish Kupp and get OBJ on board.
I'm with you on that one!

Gaines and Robinson are the types we don't usually pay anyways.

Also, every position group is pretty set next year except OL and DL. I'd rather extend Havenstein and Edwards and replace Gained and A'Shawn.

Bobby Brown was drafted IMO to eventually take one of those spots - we will have to see how he does this year.

we won't be seeing AD99 after 2023

edit: we won't be seeing AD99 after he wins SBMVP the 2nd straight year in 2023

We have seen how it affects the cap. Also I think this likely ends up a 2 year deal and he retires then.

Gaines has a shot at being a special player.

I don't get his rush to retire.
He can set all sorts of targets and career marks he can achieve.....sack records and marks etc.
While making ungodly money along the way.....but, the view always clear from the outside and the choice always easy for the fans who aren't punishing their bodies.
Dude is 31.
I can see him playing at a high level for another 4-5 years, but, who knows?
No telling what his body actually feels like....his training load has to be crazy.

Not wanting to be a decrepit old man worn down and broken by the game he loves and also made him money.

I think with Jackson on the roster that there would be a chance that one of Havenstein or Edwards is not retained. If UDFA Jack Snyder ends up being as good as some think he could push for a guard spot. Anchrum could be a cheap replacement also. Jourdan still claims that he can't be counted out. They've got options for cheaper Olinemen.

He already has an ungodly amount of money. Ungodly times 2 doesn't move the needle much. For a family man who knows that no amount of money can buy back the time he losing with his kids, this is a totally rational decision.

This will make him the highest paid defensive player of all time I think I read.

The Rams always pay at least one other D-lineman mid-tier money. That would fit for either Gaines or Robinson. They let SJD go because they had three guys coming back. They're not letting both Gaines and Robinson leave the same offseason. At least, that's not how they've been doing it.

I'm glad he's signed. It sure looks like that the new contract is structured to take advantage of the new media rights deals. NBA players do that. AD can once again threaten to walk away and retire before the 2024 season. The 2024 season is when some project the media rights deals will really bump up the cap:

First, a note on timing: The money is not flowing to players immediately. The financial shortfalls caused by COVID-19 will be spread over three years, which the players agreed to instead of a 35 percent pay cut last season, meaning the cap will probably rise slightly over the next two years and then explode. Jason Fitzgerald of OverTheCap.com said his “guess is our first real big spike year hits in 2024 with the cap probably in the range of $260 million. It should reach $300 million by 2027.”

So, if AD is still playing like AD in a couple of years, we'll probably repeat this thread, AD will get a new contract, reset the market and be worth it.

Or he'll retire and be in the HOF 5 years later.
