Yes McVay had a plan for him. And likely still does, despite the group think on this board.
The depth chart comments and comparisons with other players we could have drafted are misplaced imo. McVay is thinking of the offense as a whole plus an element of game breaking speed in the mix, not of adding another traditional receiver or another center. DJax was intended to be a one year bridge in that direction.
It may not work, maybe it's a bad plan, maybe elite speed in a small receiver won't matter on the field, maybe Atwell can't stay healthy or really run or actually track and catch the ball downfield... but imo we really don't know all that for sure just yet.
Sorry to interrupt the whining about missed draft picks.

As I said in another thread, I am scared to death that he will get hit so hard that he will be taken off the field on a stretcher.
I think he has ability. I just don't think he will last long in a season.

It’s been said; “there has never been an NFL player succeed this size”… Well.. has there ever been one this size who is quick in routes like this kid?
He has hands. He can zip around. Defenses are going to have to strategize how to cover this guy. I see potential to open stuff up, just because Tutu clears stuff out when he’s on the field.

It's a nice thought, but we will find out a lot before the final cuts before the real games start.
If I see that Tutu makes the 53 man roster, I'll be shocked and happy for him. Because this organization has the standard of the best players, playing...regardless of contracts or draft position. Particularly because this is supposed to be a deep draft for WR's and McSnead loves drafting them. Tutu will have to set his mark and beat out a lot of folks to make this team. If he does, he will have earned it and everybody can love that.

Yes, he can run around more, good hands, route running, but he will be getting hit, alot, more than in college and harder by bigger, stronger, and meaner players. He won't be able to run out of bounds as much as he'd like. And you can forget returns. Every return guy frequently gets that jacked up hit as he catches the ball. Those really will hurt and it's not just muscle mass but his bones are significantly smaller than that of a 210 safety or gunner. Those hits will get in his head if not already. That will lead to muffs, injuries, and too-soon fair catches.
I think his speed may get washed by a DB pushing him off his route at the line which won't open up anything. Someone mentioned jojo natson. He only played 38 games in 5 years with an average of 7 yards, no td's and 1 punt return over 40 yards. Not a good example.
I reiterate that I admire tutu's determination. Don't care about his text grammer. He has had to overcome alot just to get to this point, so how can you not root for him. I just don't see it but I hope that changes.
And no more tutu comments from me until at least mid season because I agree with the gif above trying to give the horse cpr......starting, now

I love the cocky attitude. Prove us wrong Tutu. I'd love nothing more than to see him go off in year two.

I'm not here to change minds that have already been made up.
For Tutu Atwell I hope:
1. He continues working hard.
2. He starts shadowing Kupp as much as possible.
3. Finds time to work out with Stafford in the offseason if offered.
4. Gets his head into the playbook and works with Coen to find his spot in the offense.
Atwell can run some routes that Benny Skow ran. (Except where he expected to throw a big block)
There is a much-getter chance that he catches that long bomb in the endzone that Benny missed. He can track a deep pass.
Same with the quick outs where defenders have to respect his speed and play off him.
On that pass over the middle that Benny had hit off his hands in the Super Bowl, you have to imagine that he would have gotten to that spot a lot quicker to make the catch,
I don't see why he can't run some deep routes Jefferson ran.
Sure there is are times when defenders will try to bump him off the line but, should they miss he will burn them. I expect he gets a nice cushion most of the time.
He knows the risks of playing against much bigger players. He can play smartly to protect himself and the ball.

Just kidding. I only brought up Natson because you kept calling Atwell the smallest player in the history of the NFL. We had a smaller one, recently, and he was an ok punt returner for us (10+ yards average the first year).

the weight difference between jojo and tutu fluctuated between who took the bigger dump in the morning, So we had the 2 smallest guys in modern history, we should have learned from the first, AND tavon. jojo's career numbers show he was not ok. 38 games played out 80 is not ok. more fumbles than td's not ok. The rams didn't get rid of him because he was ok, right? jojo, tutu..haha

The weird thing about the first one is that Brian Allen was the starting C on a Super Bowl winning team.
I guess people are playing Madden in their heads and assuming a rookie center would have been able to do what Allen could - being in his FOURTH year under McVay.
That's.......a stretch. Allen is likely light years ahead of Humphrey mentally.
For that reason I wouldn't trade Allen for Humphrey right now.
