That play was really strange in real time. It felt like time slowed and he was sitting there open for a long while. We were screaming in the stands he's open. Then the late throw and it was enough to keep us out.

That play, the other drop by Cooks on what would have been another big play (iirc that was PI), and the hold call on Gurley's run gave the game a feel of inevitability.

To McVay's cred though he changed the pieces and got it done. So thankful for that because walking out of Atlanta listening to fucktard Pats fans celebrating made that shit personal to me. The two close wins those fucks took from us in the big game still sit bad for me.

Me too. The Rams were the better team in both super bowls, especially the GSOT.
That 2001 team was one of the best teams ever and to lose that Super Bowl to a bunch of cheaters make me just flat out hate the Cheatriots more than any team (with maybe the 49ers as the exception).

True, shows how tough it is to win it all, but at least the Rams have been multiple times and won a couple, there’s plenty of fans who legitimately wonder if they’ll ever get to see their team in the super bowl in their lifetime.

I agree -there was a play on his first series where he rolled out to the right and had Woods open deep.

He had made that throw all year and instead of taking a chance on it, he decided to hold onto the ball and run out of bounds.

There was another throw that Cooks got open down the middle over 20 yards and instead tried to complete a pass to a covered guy close to the first down.

He was in "Afraid to throw an interception mode the entire first half"

It wasn't until the second half that he actually started to make some really good throws.

Really the only not so good throws in the second half was the delayed pass to Cooks open in the end zone and the interception after the Cooks drop on the next series.
I do have to add he was only 24, probably didn't want to look stupid, make silly mistakes and cause the Rams to lose. As a result, he went into ultra caution mode in the first half and when you do that - you just really drive your game down.

About the Bradford and Goff comparison of two #1 overall pick QB’s.

One of them had Jeff Fisher as his ‘best’ HC. The other one had Sean McVay as his ’best’ HC.

Naturally, one of the QB’s had the better career.

I got 3 likes so it should be pretty obvious

You are basically making a snide comment of Goff Supporters with your statement

you must be proud.

snide? get a grip man. i support goff but i'm also critical. you can be both. mcvay and the rest of the org think the same and it led to the ultimate result. i love that he was traded. happy the moment it went down and clearly more so today.

the reality is if the rams stuck with goff, they'd waste the generational talent that the rams now have on the roster.

You have to wonder what was going on between him and McVay at that point, he really went into safe mode. Contrast that with Stafford, he made some real head scratchers that went badly but it didn’t seem to affect him. I remember after the Tennessee game the media was killing Stafford and I was wondering myself if he was really an upgrade. But Stafford turned it around without handcuffing himself and there were still a few “yikes” throws from time to time but there were also a couple that will go down in Rams history. And guys in the locker room never forget, I saw a story where Martellus Bennett was still pissed that Garapalo took himself out of a game in NE when the only other qb had an injured thumb.
I still can’t believe Stafford had the balls to go no-look with the game on the line in the 4th quarter, I bet his teammates can’t either. You don’t have to have that kind of swag to win a title but it’s nice to have that guy in your team.

I just said Just stop - meaning stop trying to put down Goff supporters (whether it is me or others)

I am not putting you down - you may not have known that you were making a snide comment

But with others supporting my statement, then others probably took it the same way

And I am happy that we traded for Goff.

If you have read my comments, I have clearly stated Stafford is an upgrade over Goff.

I just was stating that Goff is not in the third tier like others have stated in Goff threads. I believe he is a second tier QB who needs a decent OL and decent running game to succeed. I believe that is being fairly critical of Goff.

Oh and I believe Stafford is a 1st tier QB.

Cheers

I believe McVay got with Goff at halftime and probably said - wtf man - play your game because Goff played a heck of a lot better in the second half. He just made two dumb mistakes in the second half that if he doesn't make either one- we probably win that game.

But if you shut down the run, and force Goff to drop back in known passing situations and read the defense, he becomes below average.

I disagree because there are too many examples where that wasn't true. Now, look at his play with the Lions. He wasn't the reason for their poor record last year. Poor OL and especially a horrific secondary lost games for them. Their run game is centered around De'Andre Swift who was in and out missing games due to injury. Yet Goff acquitted himself well, with a career-high of 67.2% and a very low INT percentage of 1.6%. He has pretty much shown that McVay refused to tailor his offense to the QB he had. Campbell to his credit has done just that by discussing the play designs with Goff.

Goff was the QB McVay inherited, not the QB he wanted. Also, Goff fell victim to Kromer's declaration that the second-year OL players were ready which they certainly were not. Go back and look at 2019 where Goff was getting pummelled. That effect it had on him carried over into 2020 with McVay's insistence to read long to short forcing him to hold the ball behind a suspect OL. The Ram OL was ranked by many as being the second worse in the NFL in 2019 and Goff still carries the blame with many for that. The Lions OL last year was ranked in the middle of the pack and Goff's performance was similar to his performance in 2020 but his turnover percentage went way down. Why? Campbell's passing offense was Goff friendly by design.

IMO Goff is better than you contend and was a whipping boy for other issues. McVay expected Goff to fit his offense. Campbell fit his offense to Goff. Which makes more sense? McVay is a HOF HC but they even have their flaws. McVay hamstrung Goff by forcing him to stay in the huddle until the last second while he made the defensive reads for him. Defenses knew that and would change the look in the last seconds not giving Goff a chance to change the play. McVay set Goff up to fail. Campbell allows Goff to make his own reads. McVay simply makes the play call for Stafford and Matt makes his own reads.

I gotta admit. After watching a replay of the 2001 game recently the Pats came out much more physical than the Rams. The Rams had the much better offense but iirc 3 turnovers did them in.

If you call tackling Marshall coming out of the backfield on pass plays physical play, then I agree with you that the Cheatriots were more physical that day

The success of an outside zone run play is predicated upon the discipline or lack thereof of the defensive front 7. If they stay disciplined and cover the gaps then the play gets stuffed. If the D loses gap control the RB should break it open. Knowing McVay's run attack was almost exclusively outside zone, the Pats simply went to a 6 man front.

That is why since 2018 McVay has tried to develop an inside run game. It's why for years I said they needed a gap blocked run scheme. McVay has tried to do that with a power scheme. The problem is Sean continues to try to pull an OL, TE or even WR as the lead blocker. WTF!! Just fucking go with a real lead blocker in a FB. Play action will be even better. Stafford will still have 4 receivers, 2 WRs, TE, RB and even a 5th in the FB who is often dropped by the coverage.

If McVay is really interested in playing a down and dirty game then run inside with a damn FB. But Sean is into eye candy deception not down and dirty. Why do you think so many of the Niners inside runs are led by a FB. That is what makes them so hard to stop. A FB is generally bigger than a SS and is a better matchup with a MIKE. Maybe they have one in Rodger Carter who is listed as a TE. He's a good blocker with good hands as a receiver.

The Bengals used that 6 man front as well knowing McVay's penchant to play an outside zone run game. So you counter with a power attack with a FB. If the FB makes his block it springs Akers into the 5 man secondary which will be spread out. All the Rams have to do is to have success once and the Rams will never see that 6 man front again.

You can give all the stats you want. Go watch the all 22 on known passing downs and watch all his turnovers, he struggles to read defenses still after 6 years in the league. He's not a terrible NFL starter but he'll never win a super bowl. The QBs that win SBs are ones that can beat defenses consistently when they know the pass is coming. This is and will always be where Goff struggles. Notice I never even mentioned he's #30 in the NFL since 2017 in yards per completion and yards per attempt for QBs. If he was better at diagnosing what defenses were doing he would be able to make more explosive plays. The play in the SB to Cooks was exactly this. He didn't see the play develop until it was too late and it cost us

He is very good in certain situations and I do think he takes some unwarranted hate. A lot of people are just unable to have a nuanced discussion about Goff. But there's levels to this shit and QB is such a hard position to play. If anyone had doubts about McVay wanting to move on, after seeing Stafford's level of QBing last year it should been crystal clear how right he was.

That and the phantom holding call when Gurley finally busted through the left side of the line. Ref only thought about throwing the flag when he realized the Rams could win.
