I couldn't possibly agree with this post any more than I do. McVay is a great coach, but he still relies too much on deception and misdirection in the run game, especially on the inside, which too often leads to our backs getting stuffed before they even get to the LOS. Sometimes it's just about brute force and attitude, and especially so with running inside.
I really wish he would get a FB like you suggest. Hell, Kyle Shanahan has been able to hide Jimmy G behind a stout inside run game with a FB and has made the 9ers relevant with a very mediocre QB. I realize we are much, much better off in the QB dept., but it would still be great to add another dimension to an already potent offense. And while I love the stuff of legend that Stafford did in leading us on that final drive in the Super Bowl, can you imagine where that game would have been had we been able to consistently run inside on the Bengals? Not close at all.
