The fact is, we never get Stafford with a Super Bowl 53 win. It is what it is.

We might not get Stafford if Goff makes that throw but we still lose.

I don't hold it too much against him, though. He was young, playing a great D and a great coach, threw another one perfectly that didn't connect because of PI, and was playing that day under a coach who admitted that he overthought things in that game. It was just an offensive shitshow all around and he was hardly the only culprit in that loss.

Since that day, the Rams have beaten Brady 3 times in a row, put a serious ass-whipping on Belichek in our one game against him, and won a Super Bowl after the most epic playoff run in league history.

I'm at peace with what happened in that game. Far more so than I'll ever be at peace over what happened in SB XXXVI.

If Goff makes that throw, we might not want to get rid of him (Goff).
Part of what we all just freakin love about Matthew Stafford is that he has some dog in him. When it's do or die, time, he gets even more focused and intense. It's a "f*ck you, we are gonna win this, bitches!" attitude.
Goff was physically tough, which no one can take from him, but I never felt confidence with him that he would come up big in crunch time like I feel with Stafford. If Goff had as much dog in him as Matthew, he makes that throw to Cook, on time. JMHO.

Stafford definitely has more dog in him, no doubt about that. And I think all those years in Detroit left him unfazed when the pressure situations came this year.

Goff's dog isn't as consistent. He had it in spades during the NFC championship (remember those last two throws to Higbee?) but it disappeared two weeks later during the Super Bowl. But he is also a guy who can overcome longer term adversity, as he showed at Cal (when they were awful when he got there and decent when he left) and didn't let the 0-7 stint in Fisher's Prevent Offense ruin him once McVay came in. I think he just lost his confidence as stuff started to go south around him '19 and '20. But I also think the reset of going to Detroit and building back up again might do good for him in the long run. He looked really good down the stretch last year.

This is why we can't have nice things......why are we reliving a BRUTAL SB loss after winning a EUPHORIC SB a few months ago?
Frankly I wouldn't have posted it if not for McCourty's arrogance in the throw comment.

I hate watching people act like assholes for no reason. And like I posted, they shut down the entire offense and confused the o-line to no end. It wasn't all on the QB.

Goff was never as good as his best games but he also wasn't as shitty a QB as his worst performances might suggest.

Since Cooks had so much time for the throw to come to him, I still feel he should have seen out of the corner of his eye, the CB coming over.

As a result, he should have taken one step to his left and turn his back to the CB and block the CB from knocking the ball out of his hands. The CB would have had to go over his back.

So I blame Cooks for about 20% of the drop. I have seen other receivers position themselves on similar pass plays so Cooks could have done the same. But yeah, Goff should have gotten his throw off a tad quicker and in better position for Cooks to catch it. So I still blame Goff for the majority of this throw.
He could have done that but that wasn’t really Cooks thing, playing with physicality, and seeing how he often got the worst of it I guess you can’t blame him. Cooks wasn’t really a guy who could bail out the qb on a throw that wasn’t great. Imagine Odell in those situations, Cooks got both hands on the first one and McCourty knocks it away, that doesn’t happen to Odell often, and the second one was absolutely pi but 1 handed catches are Odell’s specialty, there’s a pretty good chance he makes that one too. Yeah, who knows what would’ve happened if…
What if Martz runs the ball in XXXVI, the rams win 2 titles, get a new stadium and are still in St. Louis.
Maybe Goff was surprised at how open Cooks was but the throw was way late. There was some ex qb breaking it down on YouTube I think and he pointed out that Goff hitches a couple times before he let it go. If he doesn’t do that McCourty has no chance. Maybe his feet weren’t set I don’t know. Goff has a good arm but he’s wiry I don’t know if he can just fire it with a flick of the wrist like some guys.
Anyway enough about that, we’ve got a couple more to win.

I know, and you're a good egg. I just feel puke building up in my throat anytime I think of that game....

Long story short, thank god Goff is gone and Staffing is here. We win that SB with Stafford.

It's hard to fault Goff because we don't know what the play call was or what his read sequence was. He may have read him covered early and continued with his progressions only to come back late to the call. One thing we must remember, McVay, admitted he called a bad game.

That said, every first-time Super Bowl team makes those mistakes, with coaches and players. Look at the Bengals vs the Rams. Their coaches and players made mistakes, and the Rams were now the veteran team "been there done that" for whom the game wasn't too big. Taylor made a lot of questionable calls, especially on their last possession. Look at Tyler Boyd's drop, an example of letting the magnitude of the game affect him.

In the Super Bowl, the veteran team always has an advantage over a first time contestant. The Bengals won't make those mistakes if they ever make it back. That's why regardless of who wins that first game with the Bills if the Rams face them in the Super Bowl as they might, the Rams will have an advantage as the Bills' last Super Bowl was 1991.

Goff will tell you he threw a bad ball
Cooks will tell you it hit his hands he should have caught it

Anything else is irrelevant

I remember there was a B/R blurb on game-day about one of the Pats defenders saying their pre game-day comments that they were gonna make Jared shit himself.

And I remember thinking just how that struck me as the Pats held him in utter contempt. Like they thought he was just a total moron who had no business being on the field.

Now, they did do a great job of confusing the entire offense that day. But come on, don't be a bunch of fucking assholes telling the world your opponents don't deserve to be on the field.
It's not that he was a 'total moron' at all, it's just Belichick is a defensive genius and knew his weaknesses. Our entire 2018 season Gurley was the catalyst that drove everything. Goff was great in play action off of those runs. But if you shut down the run, and force Goff to drop back in known passing situations and read the defense, he becomes below average. If you can get pressure on him as well things crumble even more. They desguised defenses, they changed formations after the play clock went below 15secs so McVay couldn't communicate help. They knew our weakness on offense and shut us down. The Cooks play was a perfect example. The Super Bowl was rough, but the reason Goff is gone is because the following two years in '19 and '20 he didn't improve in those areas. And he actually regressed in some others. I think his confidence was just shot after the SB loss because to me he never really looked the same after that game outside of a rare flash here or there.

Yeah I agree that Stafford has much more "dog" in him than Goff but damn how many times did Goff make a throw in critical moments where the receiver drops the ball thereby putting the stop on any comeback.

Is it that the passes just weren't pretty enough where the receiver can catch it cleanly? I just don't know.

It probably is just plain ole bad luck.

I got 3 likes so it should be pretty obvious

You are basically making a snide comment of Goff Supporters with your statement
It's considered cool to shit on people. Defending them isn't acceptable at all this is the new world we live in. Fact is we don't get to SB53 without both Jared and Brandin but that won't ever be enough for some people.

Goff was late on that throw.......he was late on throws all day.
I remember a simple little 4 yard or so out to get a first down. Easy throw for a first down. WR made his break and there was a window. This is a play the Rams had run all year very successfully.
Instead of throwing the ball on the receivers break he waiting a step a half later and threw the ball and it was broken up.
He was late all day long in that game.
I like Goff and wish him success, but, the moment was too big for him that Sunday.

More than one thing can be true at once.
You are right.....Goff had an excellent year and a bad Super Bowl.
The Rams don't make the Super Bowl without him and....in part....didnt win the Super Bowl because of him.
A person can support a player and state the truth....he had a bad game.

Here we are again (sigh). The Rams offense stunk in that super bowl. All of them, including the line. If Kupp and Gurley were healthy, I'm positive they would have won. Let's stop blaming 1 person. It was a team loss. We all wanted Goff to "grab the bull by the horns" and win the game by himself, but look what happened to Brady against the Giants when they were 16-0. Shit happens. Thank God for this historic year.

All true and all things I've said before. Unfortunately not everybody can accept what you said and you and I agree on. They can only focus on his bad. Fact is pretty much everybody on offense, as we all I think said at the time, including McVay had a bad game that day. A few made some plays but the offense didn't do their part to get a W.

I agree -there was a play on his first series where he rolled out to the right and had Woods open deep.

He had made that throw all year and instead of taking a chance on it, he decided to hold onto the ball and run out of bounds.

There was another throw that Cooks got open down the middle over 20 yards and instead tried to complete a pass to a covered guy close to the first down.

He was in "Afraid to throw an interception mode the entire first half"

It wasn't until the second half that he actually started to make some really good throws.

Really the only not so good throws in the second half was the delayed pass to Cooks open in the end zone and the interception after the Cooks drop on the next series.
