Never know just how good these ILB'ers can be working as a unit until we see then working togther.
Most certainly rookie Jake Hummel was a power player in the middle in the 3 preseason games last year. Never failed to make a play.
BTW, they can designate up to two contracts as Jun 1st releases.
So they could do that with Wagner and likley Floyd.
Wagner then saves $8M this yr and Floyd saves $15M. Of course they will carry dead cap into next yr 24' as well.

I flip-flopped on signing Wagner. I didn't want him at first because I thought he lost a step. He showed a lot of intensity last year and was given a 90.7 PFF grade. The Rams ended up over-signing him.
I'm not completely sold on Jones. Seems a step slow to the sidelines.

What happened to all that talk about him being from Ontario? (CGI's cousin?)
Honestly, it doesn't look like it's confirmed at this point but our FO is trying to make cap room obviously and he wasn't down with a pay cut. (and I don't blame him making All Pro second team)
I have feeling more big moves are to come as well.
Also this draft is loaded with LB's in the second day, and quality ones:
Jack Cambell LB Iowa
Where he wins: Sorting through trash
Campbell is so good at executing his role as a run defender. His ability to stack-shed and continually gain ground on ball carriers is what the high-end linebackers look like at the next level.
What’s his role: MLB
Campbell has MIKE written all over him, from his size to his play strength to the way he sees the game.
What can he Improve: Working downhill
Campbell is not the type of linebacker who will shoot through a gap and make a tackle for loss. He’s almost always waiting for a running back to come to him. That’s not the worst knock in the world, but NFL running backs are bigger and stronger.
Noah Sewell LB Oregon (recognize that name?)
Where he wins: Manhandling
Like his older brother, Penei, Noah is a certified ass-kicker. To look like a man among boys at only 20 years old is not something you see every day. He’s the most powerful linebacker in the class, and it isn’t close.
What’s his role: Blitz-heavy LB/edge?
If you’re not blitzing Sewell five or more times a game, you’re not getting the most out of his skill set. He doesn’t have ideal length, but it’d be interesting to see what his raw power can do at edge rusher, as well.
What can he Improve: Coverage awareness
Sewell gets caught staring at quarterbacks a good bit. Oregon did its best to take him out of a coverage-first role, and the NFL would be wise to do the same.
Demarvion Overshown LB Texas
Where he wins: Range
If you play on the back seven in the NFL, you’re going to have to make up ground on numerous occasions every game. Overshown has that kind of make-up speed teams are looking for.
What’s his role: WLB
If Overshown is staying at linebacker, it’s going to be on the weak side. Perhaps a team would try him out in the slot given his athletic skill set.
What can he Improve: Tackling
Overshown is biting at ankles too often for a player with his level of explosiveness. He should be able to wrap up and drive.
Drew Sanders LB Arkansas
Where he wins: Blitzing
Sanders’ 11 sacks and 39 pressures from a season ago are why he’ll be coveted in the league. Everyone wants the next Micah Parsons, and while he’s not that, Sanders can bring juice to a third-down package.
What’s his role: Blitz-heavy LB
You’d be wasting Sanders’ talent not to take advantage of what he brings to the table as a blitzer. He knows how to get home.
What can he Improve: Tackler
This is to be expected in his first season as an off-ball linebacker, but it’s very worrisome, nonetheless. It’s not an easy skill to master.
PS for the love of fucking God stop saying the ignorant statement " we won last year with this or that LB". Please learn defensive schemes and the only way Lovie Smith's aka Raheem Morris' defense works is having edge rushers in which case we had Vonn fucking Miller last year to cap the pocket with Floyd. (Donald and Gaines pushing the middle) Do you not see what he's trying to achieve with his scheme? Apparently alot don't here otherwise they wouldn't have defended Morris' idiotic scheme to death last season.

The Rams aren't stupid when it comes to their cap management. They just signed Wagner to that $50M contract last year. They knew what their cap was going to be at this time of the year in September of last year. They obviously have had a plan to manage it all along.
The difference is that in September of last year Mayfield wasn't in the picture and Stafford was healthy. My son has a spinal contusion that the doc said is much like that of Stafford. He actually said that to my son and I. He told my son it would be almost a full year before it healed and to avoid contact sports for most of that year. As a corpsman during the Vietnam War I saw a lot of spinal contusions and most took at least 10 - 12 months to heal. Stafford suffered from tendonitis in his elbow and it was very obvious it affected his deep throwing accuracy. Look at all the under and over throws last year while he nursed that elbow. That is going to be a chronic condition that will require them to have him on a throw count during camps. Why do you think I keep saying QB2 is a huge need this year.
Mayfield is with out a doubt their best option if they are serious this year and in the future. He will cost them around $5M as a backup. I sincerely hope this is the reason they have cut ties with Wagner. After the outstanding season Wagner had last year there has to be a real big reason why they would release him and I hope it's to sign Mayfield.
The only reason Mayfield would pass on a starting position elsewhere is that Snead and McVay want him as a starter in 2024. It would be the best move, in the long run. Stafford may not like it but he wasn't going to be here in 2026 anyway and he's got his ring with a real opportunity to get a second ring. This will free up pick 36 for an edge. Pick 69 will likely be an ILB or TE.
McVay doesn't like waiting to develop rookie QBs and as it showed with Goff, Sean wants a QB of his choice. The way he gushed about Mayfield when he was signed and afterward you could see that Baker was a QB he wanted. Baker is IMO a Goff equivalent in terms of physical talent. He proved me wrong, he's not another Murray. Clearly he's worked hard to learn to be a pocket passer not just an RPO QB. The Rams got Mayfield for nothing. They had 5 games as a trial run and he won 2 of those games with a trash OL and one starting WR. Clearly, with a healthy team around him Baker is good enough to be a Super Bowl QB. Mayfield would stay because he can see the tremendous talent around him and this would be his best chance at SB rings.
That's why I hope they were clearing cap for Mayfield. So now they will execute the plan they made a year ago to get under the cap. When you look at the FA list of the Rams, the guys like A'Shawn Robinson, Hill, and Rapp cover the deficit. The guys that they are likey to re-sign off the FA list are fewer than those they will allow to walk giving them the clearance they need to sign their draft class. Mayfield was the largest contract on the FA list so it would seem that perhaps they needed the $5M from Wagner's contract to sign Mayfield. If it's a tradeoff between Mayfield vs Wagner I think it's a good one.

I like Wagz but Agree 100% he doesn’t move the needle too much for the Rams. McVay probably considered early retirement based predominantly on the shit show offense they can fielded last year. I see him turning over a lot of stones to ensure much better results this year. This may include sacrificing multiple defensive players to help facilitate offensive improvements.Ugh... So many words. I feel depressed.
Rams were willing to get rid of Bobby Wagner because we are in at least CAP Purgatory, if not CAP Hell. Looking at AD on the wrong side of 30, I have little doubt that Snead would pull the trigger on a trade for high draft picks. Our time at the top seems to be at a real end.
Well, on the bright side, at least we got to the top. If you are a fan of some other team that's never remotely had a chance (Cleveland) or one that got close but fell short, you never had what we had in 2021. And we won it in our house in the first Super Bowl ever played there.
