Lots of pieces to this:

1) Maybe Rams don't do this if Wagz wants to stay
2) Rams defense immediately takes a hit
3) Rams gain needed cap space
4) Rams altered scheme to play more 2 off the ball LB D with Wagz last year and while they take a hit with the quality of player, they will perhaps gain some ground by returning to more 5-1/6-1 fronts now which may benefit pass rush slightly but with a hit in run defending

Wagner struggled to start the season but really came on thereafter. This is a big loss and creates a hole on the roster. With the 49ers in the division a strong MLB is a real asset. Considering this move leaves several million in dead cap, I'd rather have kept him, but Wagner was probably frustrated and wanted out. He came here to win, held up his end of the bargain in terms of level of play, and saw the team collapse around him. I don't blame him.

I wonder how much McVay's drama soured players. I could see it being a challenge to convince other players you are really all-in.

I'd consider it if we received Pittsburgh's overall #17 & #32 in this years draft.
Don't have that kind of leverage. Best case a #1 and a conditional pick or two based on how long he plays for Pittsburgh.

And it might come down to accommodating Donald if he wants to go to Pittsburgh and the Rams wanting to fix their cap issues. In that case even if you only get a single #1 or a couple #2's that is what you may have to accept if you want to improve your long-term cap health.

I thought he played well for us last year, but my question is why doesn't he think he can win with the Rams?
He saw all the injuries like we did. Doesn't he think we can get healthy and turn it around like we do?

If it frees up money for an Oline veteran signing then I am all for it.

We were the best team in the NFL without Wagner but with a solid Oline.

There are many ways to scheme to stop the run, but if your Oline sucks your season is over.

Or maybe Wagner has been told of other moves coming?

It sounds like he wanted out. I am shocked by this move. Wagner was a big part of our run D.

Did Wagner have a no-trade contract ? If not, perhaps he was concerned about his future possible location.

This sucks. Even though we won the SB last year, most of us were happy that they finally addressed our Achilles heel, midfield, with picking up Wagner. It was fun while it lasted I guess...

Gotta clear cap space. Also funny how many were hesitant at the signing and were calling him slow and washed early in the year and now people are upset about this. With the way the contract was done this looked like the first target to clear cap space honestly.
Quite right. Wasn't he supposed to improve our run defense?

2021 1752 yds / 4.0
2022 1956 yds / 4.3

I thought he played well at times and at other times not so much. Maybe saying it was "mutual" is like asking a guy "which of these 3 teams would you rather be traded?".

Ernest Jones is now the guy

Love the player. Hated his deal w the Rams. Our defense is obviously gonna need some overhauling of sorts so he probably saw the writing on the wall. If it wasn't this year it would be next.

I'd say Jones was almost invisible last year. Maybe it was scheme but he didn't look great most of the time.

Stand by more to come.....in other units

Snead/ McVay has a good amount of young ILB'ers who have been around lurking as Rams for years. Snead in is a good position not to have to draft an ILB utilizing his 2023 draft ammo in this year's draft which is a positive. Go with what he has been collecting for the last 2 seasons they are familiarly with & the talents.

Ernest Jones- was drafted in 3rd rd in 2021. Can play the MLB'er post & WSILB post.

Christian Rozeboom -MLB'er has been under Rams contract since 2021 season. 26/2 yrs 6-2 230lbs

Jake Gervase- 6-2 220lbs has been a Ram since 2021 27/2 former strong safety tuned WSILB post. McVay favorite ST'mer

Travin Howard- 6-1/220 26-4 yrs. Has been injured a lot playing the WSILB post. Is a playmaker when on the field.

Jake Hummel- is a 2022 UDFA 24 yr old who led preseason in tackles true 6-1 240lbs MLB'er type.

There's a good amount of young LBs but only one good one.. Jones. The the rest are Practice Squad guys or special team and pray they don't play meaningful minute guys.
