Hmmmm. My understanding is that it was the other way around. It's the Rams who don't want to commit to future years; they want to take it a year at a time. I recall McVay saying that directly. Last year Stafford said he wanted to play for a few more years. This year I've only seen the quote I referenced but the lack of commitment to the Ram/Stafford connection seems to be coming from the Ram side.
I’ve not seen anything from him saying anything more than playing another year since ‘22 after his neck issue.
Which is why I’ve felt they don’t want to add years leading to a big dead cap hit if he retires.
I would love to see him in Horns 5 more years but retirement rumors persist with him year after year.
You just posted where he merely “hoped” he’d play after this year

This was all based on memory but I just searched and found this 8/12/24 article.

While on “Pardon My Take” recently, Stafford said he hopes to play another three or four years. “Every year that I play now, I just appreciate so much and I think back on – I mean, we were just talking about plays from my rookie year and it’s like, man, that was a long, long time ago,” he said.

So last year he states he wants to play 3-4 more years. That would mean 2-3 more years now. This year he says he hopes to be with the Rams after this year.

His statements have consistently been that he wants to continue for a while. There were no retirement rumors this year. In reality, all retirement rumors are coming despite Stafford's statements, not because of them.

Hopes and thinks are a commitment. He's never said outright he'll play out his contract nor has he looked for an extension just more guarantees, without guarantees of his own.

Agreed on no commitment. Nevertheless, there is no evidence from Stafford that he's thinking about retiring soon. That's how this little sub-topic got started.

When fans say 'he may retire if we win the SB', that's speculation. Stafford has said nothing to suggest that. In fact, his words, which should be the strongest evidence and definitely stronger than speculation, only suggest that he will continue for a while longer.

Let me ask this question:

If Dart is there at 26 and a team was willing to trade up with us for him (I do not believe this to be remotely the case) what does it take for the Dart likers to move off 26?
I'm taking Dart and not moving.

No evidence and no commitment so nothing really to make us lean one way or another. You're pushing the thought that because it's what you want to believe.

We have him for '25 and his contract rights for '26
That's all that matters right now
Looking forward to the draft

Of course, nothing says that all of those years will be with the Rams.

He may suffer a serious injury at his age and then he is done. And it's not a stretch. Achillies go at his age, especially for QB's. Look at Rodgers, Cousins, Watson, Marino, and Testaverde to name a few high profile ones.

I hope he is doing some sort of preventive exercise regiment for such an injury. And that says nothing about a back injury, a concussion, etc... sure any player can suffer an injury, but at 37 it's much more likley to end a career.

We need to take a swing at QB this year if possible.

I get the sentiment. Since we have Garropolo, my preference is that we forego a QB swing this year and wait until a stronger QB draft next year.

Of course, if the Rams have the success we suspect they might have, picking at the bottom of the round won't ensure access to a better option at QB even in a stronger QB class.

That’s what I’m thinking. If someone is there that they like, even if it’s a lesser like than what MIGHT be available next year, I’m guessing they take him.

I'm assuming they pick #32 next year. That's not much different than #26 this year.

If the draft is much deeper and stronger, they can make a major move up for the QB of the future ala what the Chiefs did in 2017 when they moved from #27 to #10 or the when the Rams moved from #15 to #1 in 2016.

Trade back in a heartbeat. Dart ain't worth it to me plus teams give up a lot to make moves for QBs.

The kicker is how long do the Rams view him as a viable option because I'd think they'd want to move off of him prior to the wheels falling off a bit which is likely to happen sooner than later. Not saying he's there but he ain't no spring chicken.

And his statement was inconclusive he came down right on the middle of the fence.
