We saw what “long term power” looked like in the 70s… and got nothing.

You play to win titles.
The Rams won.

yes, we won a sb and i will always be thankful for that but how do we know we wouldn't have won one without the trade. after all, goff got us to a sb and if cupp had been healthy we might have won that one. any way i am glad we made those trades but i do think we paid too much for them. take the ramsey trade i think we gave 2 first round picks maybe more than we had to give him a big contract. the stafford trade we gave 2 first and a third plus goff than we extended stafford contract. any way i think right now goff is worth at least 2 first probably more so Detroit was to trade goff they would have gotten at least 4 first and a third for a qb that is likely on the downhill side of his career. any way i am glad we done the trades but i think we gave too much for them

I know we won a Super Bowl.

You and I can speculate all we want.. but we can look around and see all the teams who have built things "the right way" who never get there.

I don't think they gave away too much... because they hit the mark, which was winning the Super Bowl.

well, that is what makes this sight so great is we can disagree without being disrespectful. i agree that winning that sb was great but if got a raise one year and got no raise the next i will be happy that i got the raise the one year but still be disappointed that i didn't get one the next year. anyway, i get your point but i guess my problem is i was hoping for a 2 or 3 years in a row after all we have a lot of players that are getting older

All good.

My point is that, of course, it was worth it.

Does that mean this year is great? Of course not.

But making the moves they did and winning the Super Bowl was a massive success.

I disagree. The Rams won two championships since 1951. I'd sell out any time to get a title. If the Rams had done that and rebuilt every single time, we'd have more than two championships. Frankly, if Vermeil hadn't retired after SB 34, I think we would have won another one under his watch. Martz had too much ego to make adjustments and wanted to win in his way. The cheaters had 8 defensive backs in the game and he didn't unleash Faulk and the running game to make them stop it.

Can you imagine that Oline and Faulk against 3 D linemen and 8 DBs? They'd get blown off the ball. You go tempo so they can't substitute without a timeout. After they put back the base defense, Warner would have eaten them for lunch.
Ummmm, to say I disagree puts it mildly. Vermiel was a absolutely HORRIBLE coach. He was NOTHING without Martz. Together they were pretty good, real good.
Martz by himself could only last so long. Empty backfields and 7 step drops forced that issue.
And I never forgave him for letting go of Warner. Bulger was no Warner and if I knew it, Martz should have known it.
He should have just sat Kurt and let him heal and put up with the wife. Warner proved himself over and over after the Rams and you can not blame him for being a little bitter about it. He made the HOF after the Rams.
I had absolute trust in him. When he dropped back and planted his back foot and threw the ball in-time, something good always happened. Fearless.
Vermiel only got his job because our HAG of a owner pulled him out of retirement because she knew him. No one wanted the guy and the only reason he had success after the Rams in KC was because he took Martz's offense and his quarterback with him.
His offense was so bad in 98 that a guy who should not have even been in the NFL, June Henley was the Rams leading rusher. Because Dick liked him, he was a "try hard" guy. Get out.
Don't you remember him taking over the play calling that year ? I could guess the basic play over half the time that season just by the formation. Do you remember all the goal line tight formation, extra tackle JUMBO plays ? Tell your opponent what you are going to do and give it a whirl ?
We went from that garbage to goal line 3 wides where Kurt could throw it or hand it off to Faulk with actual room to get it done with ease.
Did you forget about the very near MUTINY in 98 ?? DV was awful.
The 99 season was a special one and the Rams had near dynasty right in front of them and screwed it up. Why ? Ownership was more loyal to their guys, the people they knew in charge rather than put real football people in charge like Carrol Rosenbloom had.

We have the right guy in McVay right now and the right owner and what I want is a modern day dynasty.
Thing is, McVays first SB was too much for him. He stayed in his basic offense, his game plan too long just like Martz did. I was hopping he would have come out at the half in the 2 minute, 2 TEs. Something to throw off BB and let him adjust but he didn't. We moved the ball a little at the end in the 2 minute and got that FG attempt but it was too late.
Luck plays a part in all of this. Goff gets that end zone shot off a split second earlier and the Rams could have won that game. (then no Stafford trade)
The Rams could very easily have lost last years SB too and the sellout was for a NFC Championship. We got it but are paying the price right now. Time will tell on all of this. And you know what, Goff might have some more Super Bowls in him they way he is playing right now. He is playing near textbook quarterback right now.
I want to see McVays prowess in the draft room for years and years,

Spare me the analysis.

The Rams won.

Are YOU mad the Rams won a Super Bowl? Because it sure sounds like it.
Can you read ? I stated I was not sad the Rams won the SB but you still pop off.
I stated the Rams overvalued that SB in their fancy new stadium and did in fact sell out. They got what they were after but the "no free lunches" rule is still in effect.
The 70s ? You think the Baltimore Colts were a better team in that decade because they won "one" Super Bowl ? Most people forgot they won the Super Bowl. Chiefs got one.
The Los Angels RAMS had the best defense of the 1970s. Not the Pittsburgh Steelers. They Rams were not as successful as the Steelers and Cowboys because they did not have the quarterback or the right offensive coordinator.
They do now.
Do not try and take away what those great Rams team did, And they easily could have won the 79 Super Bowl (Cromwell drop) It would have been great to win that game but you and so many others are the "I want it NOW" types.
No matter the price.
Players on the 2nd and 3rd contracts are the worst values and you can only give up the farm so many times.
BTW, are you paying attention to what Goff is up to these days. One another one in the 4th quarter today and the Detroit Lions are the #1 team in the NFL in the Red Zone.

I get it.. you don't care about championships, I do.

Take away what they did in the 70's? They made it to exactly one Super Bowl. And lost.

You act as if the Rams hadn't been on a 5 year run that equaled anything done in the 70's.. they did... and made it to 2 Super Bowls in that time frame and won one.

So.. again... spare me the analysis.

I saw that the Jets had to start Zach Wilson. That was pretty much the end of that game.
Jared lead his team to all of 13 offensive points. He came up clutch, I'll give him that!

From someone who lived through it, the 1970s was a great decade to be a young Rams' fan, despite not winning a Super Bowl. The 1974 and 1976 NFC Championship Game losses in Minnesota remain, to this day, two of my most painful sports' memories but the good memories far out-weigh the bad.

The Rams were really good back then, when only four or five teams made the playoffs in each Conference.
It was a real accomplishment. There was a ton of continuity because there was no free agency.

I got great memories of the '70s, even the early part of the decade when the Rams wore their old, simple blue and white; and got to see Roman Gabriel, Deacon Jones, Coy Bacon and Willie Ellison ... among others.

I enjoyed the 1980s too; and the Rams went to the playoffs most seasons. For me, the problem with the '80s was that the best team in the NFL that decade played in the same division ... and it was the Evil-49ers.

Great description. We were definitely good enough to have won a few SBs, esp, in the 70s. Freakish things (like the mud bowl, phantom penalty on Tom Mack, etc.) happened.

I think you give yourself greater likelihood of running the table more often if you’re perennially in the hunt. All-in for one year won’t result in as many imo. I think McSnead are capable of the former, a la Belichick/Brady.

Here’s the thing…

You need a Brady. Or Montana… when they are young, to build around.
Rams closest chance was with Warner, but they fucked it up.

@gogoat1 People might have forgotten that the colts won a super bowl back then, but at least they can look it up. I've tried arguing with leite about the Rams being great in the 70s. No Super Bowl wins, so apparently they weren't good enough. It's like it never happened.

From the guy telling me what I think? Lol..

You're CLEARLY stating you prefer a model that didn't produce championships to one that has. You care more about... something.. than you do about winning championships.

That defense gave up the least rushing yards, least rushing TDs against and had the most sacks.
The best and all the Rams had to do was get rid of Harris and Hayden and a coach who knew the forward pass.
Heck, if they kept Jaworski they would have been better off.

I am actually good with the Rams' Model of having elite, highly-compensated talent at the top of the roster. I think they value having Stars in Los Angeles. Demoff made such a comment in 2021.

Getting that type of elite talent is expensive (giving-up draft choices) and a little risky. The two picks for Ramsey were in the 20s. Travis Etienne is good ... K'Lavon Chaisson is not. I think the expectation was that the picks surrendered for Stafford would also be late in the first round. There's the risk ... this year's #1 pick will be high Round 1.

However, a big part of the Model is drafting well in mid-rounds ... finding and developing good players; and holding on to some of them The Rams have not done those things particularly well in my opinion. That's NOT the reason for this miserable season. Injuries killed them this year.

Going forward, I think the Rams roster is solid but not elite; and their best players are not young.

Most do not know how close the Rams came to getting Bill Walsh before he went to SF.
It could have been us. Could you imagine that defense with Bill Walsh on offense ?

The Cowboys? Which era? 90's?
Sounds good... start with the #1 overall pick in a year where the QB is an HOF caliber player. Oh.. and give them a Minnesota team willing to give a fortune for a decent player.
9ers? Sounds good... start with a young Joe Montana.
Pats? Sounds good.. start with a young Tom Brady.

Get the Rams that young QB they can build around.

The Rams have been very good and went for it. Absolutely nothing wrong with that. The Donald window won't be open forever.

I would've LOVED for Slater and Youngblood to play for a team that won the Super Bowl.

Kupped I am a drag racer and you remind me of a certain type of racer.
I am a racer who builds his entire car himself. 69 GTO, all Pontiac (gogoat) and I built the engine, trans and rear and put it in myself.
Ground up kind of guy.
There are racers who want to be a real racer but can not do it all and have a lot of money. They buy a already made car or engine and trans and bolt it in.
Then they run a very fast time and act like they have done something. Then they sell it all and are done.
Or these Deltas who buy the hot Tesla and outrun the guy who toiled on his old classic to run that fast.

I think the Rams teams of the 70s were better than the Colts and Chiefs teams who got a ring. One and done.

Good talk.
But this is a Rams football board.

I’m much more excited about a team willing to take big swings. And I don’t bail on them when things get tough, like this year.

I guess that’s the difference… you’re a fan who can only stand good times.. to the point you’d rather not try to win a championship.

I’m all in on winning big. People remember championships… they’re what separate good from great.
