There's nothing wrong with "hating" teams, coaches or players. I don't think it's childish. I think it usually for good reason. You don't really fan like that....unless you have a reason? Other fans can have other reasons can't they? I can't stand Eagle fans because I have lived amongst them for most of my life. And they'll talk shit but never own it when the team fails....which is most of the time. But I get your point about stupid fights and dumb shit over sports. That makes both parties 'dumb'. Better to avoid that crappola at any stadium or bar. In a way, wearing your team colors in a stadium as a visiting team, is beginning to ask for problems. Talking shit in that situation is begging for it. I've been to Eagles/Rams game multiple times and there are so many assholes who want to pick a fight when they see a visiting jersey.I must say the "I hate this team or this player or coach" is childish to me. In my old age I don't really fan like this anymore unless I really have a reason. Also I've seen so many actual fights and dumb shit over sports it's not worth it. So I agree in some ways that the hate narrative is unhealthy. Sometimes other people being assholes get lumped in by association. It's sometimes celebrated behavior that has actual consequences.
However, I couldn't care less if someone makes fun of a coach's face. I generally don't like political correctness anyway.
I sat in the infamous 700 level for Vermeils first game back to Philly on a Thursday night. The Rams were 3-9 and the Eagles 2-10. As me and my buddy (a Miami fan who ran on the field in Philly back in '93 when Shula became the all time winner) were taking our seats, the people a couple of rows in front of us turned and asked us if we were gonna be cheering loudly. I said, "3-9 vs 2-10? What the fuck is there to cheer about? Why do you ask?" They point to the fans sitting higher behind us and said, "cause we don't want to get hit with anything they throw at you". We turned around and they were waving at us! Halftime in the pissers, some jack ass in line behind me screams 6 inches from the back of my head, "THE RAMS SUCK!!!". Before it went any further another Eagle fan in the line next to us said, "shut up, so do we!". No fights. I was wearing my #11 Everett Rams jersey (with no name on the back). It happened to be Rick Tutens number at the time. He was on the field 5 times and somebody asked me, "you related to the punter?" LOL.
