Isn't Stafford under contract? What if the Rams just say we will not pay you more money, and we will not trade you. I suppose he could sit out for the year. But then I am assuming he would lose all his money for the season, so cannot see that happening. He could also pout and play badly. But what team would pay him big money at his age coming off a down year, they'd say prove it wasn't age related. I do think the Rams have the leverage here, even if, from an asset maximization stand point, you likely do seek to move him if you cannot come to terms.

I'd personally just pay him, even if he wants 3 years. I am quite confident he has 2+ left anyway. Elite QBs cost money. Find the money elsewhere on the roster. A portion of the young guys we need to pay are good but not guys I'd want to commite huge money too anyway, like B. Young. We will need to keep hitting on our drafts, which is life in the NFL. If our pro scouting didnt transform from elite to garabge over night we would be in amazing cap shape anyway. Jackson. Tre White. Parkinson. Lots of swings and misses. Re-signings have been questionable too. Noteboom...

For those that bemoan the perceived lack of local fan support for the Rams, Stafford going to the Raiders certainly would not help.

I'm not going so far as to say it would be handing the market to the Raiders, but when you're no better than the 3d most popular sports team in the market, when the #1 and #2 most popular teams are internationally known iconic franchises, and when those iconic franchises made titanic, positive moves in the past 12 months, trading your SB winning QB is not going to help your popularity/market share.

The hyperbolic hot take would probably be something like: The Rams are fighting for relevancy. Trading Stafford is surrendering to obscurity.

If Stafford isn’t ready to sign a four year deal with a new team, then it doesn’t even make sense for us to trade him.
Who’s going to give up high picks for a 1-2 year rental?

Getting a mid round pick and taking an upside down cap hit, shouldn’t even be an option.
We gave a 2nd and a 3rd for Von Miller and he was here for less than that.

I think there's a ton new here! The biggest being Jourdan basically saying there's not much wiggle-room from the Rams on what they're going to pay.

So the negotiation wasn't let's meet in the middle, it was always, here's what we're offering, go out and check the market and then see what you want to do (with maybe a tiny bit of wiggle room).

She def thinks there would be interest in Rodgers.
it's a good interview... however, in a negotiation like this neither side can really let anyone know what's actually going on.

If the rams really are like we have to pay these guys next year we we wont pay you anymore.

I think they are fucking up.

We can sign some of these new guys next year to extensions, but we have no viable QB option without stafford. So these 3 year contracts or whatever will be a total waste anyway, because we will be like most teams going from one shitty QB situation to another.

The new contracts will run their course and nothing was gained.

I mean, you might have a point somewhat but trading a soon to be 38-year-old quarterback isn’t really handing over the market to another team. Now, if he still had 5 to 10 years left and could lead them out of the cellar for a sustained run then maybe. But just my opinion.

And if he retires next year? We would be in far worse shape then.

Not enough. If they are only getting a 2nd or a 3rd in 2025. ( Not enough) then the conditional pick should be a number 1 in 2026. Anything less is not an option.
This is what the Jets traded for Aaron Rodgers, who was a little older but coming off better seasons than Stafford:
Jets
#13
#42
6th round pick
2024 conditional 2nd that became a 1st if Rodgers played 75% of the snaps

Packers
#15
5th round pick
Aaron Rodgers

Expecting to get a 2nd in 2025 and a 1st in 2026 is optimistic. We should expect first round value for Stafford. The trades I proposed would get us roughly that.

The more I think about it, the more I think McVay likes Ewers. I can't say why exactly, but seems like a McVay type of guy. I would not be surprised at all if they took him. I just wonder what round that would need to be in.
Yeah if he didn't get enough of Goff filling his pants with shit when the rush was there then he'll get a nice run of that with Ewers.

Though in all seriousness I have to be fair with Ewers in that I think Golden could have been more in a better system and coach so maybe that is true with Ewers as well. For me personally though, I don't like QBs who look scared in the pocket. And I'll be surprised if McVay does.

I don't think it's Ewers. We reportedly met with Jalen Milroe at the Combine. I'm not saying he's the guy, but recall McVay speaking about wanting mobility at QB back when Goff was having his issues and Wolford was here. I believe McVay wants a mobile QB. Milroe is very mobile. Dart and Howard are both quite mobile too.

The way Snead and McVay are handling this makes you think a trade is coming soon. When McVay said earlier he didn't want this to drag on and on he meant they were prepared to move on from Stafford if he tried to leverage them. That's a game both Snead and McVay aren't playing. Good luck playing for the Raiders. They could fuck up a wet dream.

Milroe’s hands are very small 8.5 which would be a red flag for me. Plus there are times he is erratic with his accuracy.

8.75", which is not ideal. And yes, he needs a lot of development as a passer. If he didn't, he'd be going top 5. Simply put, there aren't a lot of people on this earth who are 6'1" 225, run a 4.4 40, and have a rifle for an arm. Boom/bust pick. I get why McVay would do it.

Worth a listen, IMO. Nothing earth-shatteringly new, but a lot of nuance and context. Jourdan is awesome, so smart and well-spoken and does her homework.

For me, only thing slightly "new" from this interview: IF (IF!!!) Stafford were to leave, the only 2 "bridge" QB's mentioned were Jimmy G and Rodgers. Jourdan gives a lot of detail about McSnead's opinions of both guys. Notable by omission: no discussion of any other bridge QB, whether it's Darnold, Geno, Kirk, Wilson, Fields, or any of the other options.

Jourdan makes it clear that the bridge QB would be for a one-year rental in 2025. They decline to speculate about who they might go after to be the next "franchise QB" in 2026 and beyond.

If I were Stafford I would stay a Ram. The worst thing IMO would be for Matt to watch the Rams win the NFC with Jimmy G or Rodgers next season without him from his couch. He would be real sorry he left.
