Exactly.
Higgins being franchised is probably the best thing for the Rams. He’s terribly over rated and will get massively over paid. Glad it won’t be the Rams who will be doing it.
We're obviously not signing him since he's tagged but just curious...where do you rate him? What do you see him being worth?

I want speed but I'm okay with a temporary vet like Godwin or Adams until Puka gets his contract.

And then when Puka gets paid, I want to pair him with fresh legs on a rookie contract so we're not committing too much money to the WR position.
It’s a gamble either way. Some college receivers don’t get tolling until year two. Recently that’s not been the norm….at least for all of these highly regarded receivers entering the league. A mid round pick may take time to acclimate.

I’d hope they take Egbuka if they use the first rounder on a receiver. I think he’s pro ready.
Nope. I am acknowledging that the way the FA and draft look it seems unlikely that filling the X role with an ideal option will line up for us. Probably looking at one of the smaller options round 3 range on.

Also I am saying the slot role is the key to McVay's offense, so that is a bigger need than the X role, which has been a hole for us for years now.
And this is why a stud Tight end makes sense in this draft.

This is surprising for how little he’s been used. Also he’s not the most physical blocker or even great on jet sweeps, etc…..

But to keep it in perspective it’s only a one year deal. Maybe they are hedging their bets after looking hard at the free agent WRs and the WRs in the draft.

I'm sure Tutu gives them some flexibility going into the draft. He can back up every spot on the offense, has speed and was best from the slot.

Now they may feel we don't have to force speed so much at pass catcher, nor a specific X, F, Z receiving position and have more flexibility to go after a TE they want.

That being said, we now have two guys who look like they may take up a lot of snaps in the slot with Tutu and Whitt. If anything, I think the likelihood of drafting a mostly slot receiver like Burden (or Ebuka depending on how you feel about his snaps outside in college) has gone down.

(Also, this will probably require its own post but there's a scenario where Puka increases a ton of snaps in the slot and Tutu and Whitt split time at Z). Some of this I don't expect to get settled till training camp)

You don’t like Egbuka? He seems like a good fit for this team.

I was just never impressed with him. And while he is a good fit for what we have done (slightly faster, but worse route runner than a young Kupp) - I just don't think that is what this offense needs.

Our three best offensive years under McVay were 2017, 2018 and 2021.

All three featured an outside deep threat - whether they were utilized a lot or not (a lot: Cooks, not a lot: Watkins and Jefferson). That is the element we are missing, and I don't think Egbuka fills that. It'll be interesting to see his 40 time, but even then I felt like every catch this season that he had, he was either wide open from a zone where they were focused on Smith, OR in man there didn't seem to be much separation. I could be wrong, but I also don't want more of the same....unless Atwell is going to be our version of Cooks.....based on the salary maybe that is the case, but then I don't know why he didn't play more last year.

Noting that he is best from the slot is key. Now they have two options in Tutu and Whittington that can slide into Kupp's slot role. I agree that now they probably look primarily at a TE and the X WR position in the draft.

I wouldn't be surprised if we see the Rams going for the Jayden Higgins or Jalen Royals type early - that is before the 3rd round.

Both seem to make sense, question is can they maneuver to get them?

Or, with so many guys graded similarly from mid 1st to 2nd round, do we see them possibly take a guy like this early. I expect that there will be surprise guys in the 1st round given it's lack of strength and teams picking more for need across a flat talent class.

Well with whispers of teams having top 32 grades on these guys and it being generally accepted that player 15 to 45 is about the same, I wouldn't be surprised at surprise guys in the 1st round either.

Do you think this means McVay will actually use him?

Wow that's a surprise. The re-up and the amount.
When he gets looks he produces.

I mean he's no Kupp but could they be comfortable enough with his growth + WR additions to have decided to move on from Kupp and his salary?

He sure as hell better! At 10 million he needs to at least be our #3.

I think Xavier Smith needs to get some looks at WR as well this year. If he's going to be our punt returner again, he will be active on game day.
Watch his college highlights, they are all at WR. Good hands, but he has speed and can stop on a dime and make guys miss.

Thanks I always value the opinions of fans of the team that watch all or most of the games.

I still think Egbuka has some bust potential....but I will admit, if we Tutu's $10 million contract means he will actually play, Egbuka complements Tutu pretty well.

What role do you see each of them playing?
