Yea I have to give it up to Snead and his staff. This draft was a homerun.

But regarding Carter, I was stunned to see the Lions pass on him on draft day. I get the red flags, but pairing him with Hutchinson seemed like a great way to build that defense.
Yeah.. they overthought that one, I think.

The pick

Showing the Cover 2/4 shell ... Rams blitz Jones, drop Hoecht. He and Roze cover the short zones... passing off the shallow crosser our of the shell they rotate to match cover-3 robber... the #2 and #3 receiver cross but no matter, lake, the star, has the #2 vertical guy --- he matches the ROTUE not the man. He does not take the #2 guy as in man or the man that is in his zone and pass him off. That does happen in the short zone, but not in the match zone. Lake matches the vertical route when THEN turns in ... so he stays on him. Never passing him off.

Fuller rather than playing the deep 1/2 or deep 1/4 comes up and robs (TRIX) the crosser, the final #2 vertical route that Lake is trailing.

The #1s are taken either MOD (Man outside and deep --up top) and MEG (man everywhere he goes down below with Spoon) both the #1 receivers go vertical so it's no problem

Johnson takes the middle of the field caps the most dangerous vertical route ... he cannot help both Durant and Spoon, he plays to the QBs face, I guess... caps Spoon's guy

I also like..
Kobie Turner 78.4
Jalen Carter 85.5
For being drafted 80 picks later.. that's incredible. And people talk about Carter being a generational talent.
Carter has been tailing off last few weeks. Started hotter than Turner. last half of season? Turner > Carter

Overall? IMO draw or maybe, just a SLIGHT advantage fo Carter. He has more talent, physical qualities but Turner more advanced.

Lol.

The defense is where it is because of coaching and it's playing below it's talent level.

That's some high-comedy shit.

The Rams have one... 1.. uno.. first rounder on defense. ONE. Aaron Donald.
He's next to a 3rd and 4th rounder on the line.. and a UDFA and 3rd rounder on the edge.
Off ball linebackers are a 3rd rounder and two UDFAs.
Starting safeties are a 6th rounder and a vet-minimum guy who was released.. but had been a third rounder... just like one of the starting corners.
The other starting corner is either a 4th rounder or 6th rounder.. depending on who's going.
They have a nice role player at safety/star who was drafted in the 6th round.

This defense has an absolute dearth of talent and it's unfuckingbelievable that they're not last in just about every category.
People outside of the Rams media beat who watch this say it's amazing.
We know the secondary guys are all limited.. but... somehow.. they confuse the opposing QBs enough to get stops.

It's been a HELL of a coaching job on that side of the ball. Period. I don't give a fuck if you want to credit Pleasant.. Henderson.. Lake.. I don't care.. but the REALITY is that unit is punching way above its weight.

Just for some goddamn perspecitve

Cleveland has the number one D this year.

Myles Garrett number one overall pick and the best defensive player this side of Aaron Donald.
Next to him is Dalvin Tomlinson.. a second round pick on his third team who signed a 4 year $57 million dollar deal.
Jordan Elliot.. a third rounder.
Zadarius Smith.. a former first rounder who's on a 3-year $42 million dollar contract.

Off ball Lb
2nd rounder
5th rounder
3rd rounder

Safeties
UDFA.. but only because their starter.. a second rounder.. is hurt.
2nd rounder they signed on a 3 year $21 million dollar deal

Corners
Denzel Ward was the number 4 overall pick in the draft
Another first rounder

So.. get the fuck outta here with the nonsense that the coaching is, somehow, holding this defense back. Anyone.... ANYONE who pays attention to the NFL knows they've overachieved. How? I honestly have no idea. They have no pass rush and no real playmakers in the defensive secondary.. it's freaking wizardry and/or good fortune, best I can tell.

I have no criticism of Morris' defense this season. What I find odd is that he didn't do better with the 2021 team with all that talent. But still no complaints because the defense was good enough to win the SB and tie the record for sacks in a SB.

I don't know your definition of "better". But it was not as good in 2021 as in 2020. But fair-minded folks need to remember teams had a chance to prepare for the Fangio-type scheme.

So it is a fair question to ask...The Rams were still not a bad defense. Good vs run, good at sacking QBs, picking off passes, a low defensive passer rating, among the best. Among the best at not giving up explosive plays. But they did give up a lot of passing yards--only 22nd in NFL.

What frustrated me was not those who wished it had been better vs the pass but the ones who called for Morris to be fired at midseason of 2021. Midseason.

Not saying that was you. It was not everyone, some people were fair but as a long-time Rams fan, I never got the hate. Still don't. It's like when the Rams won it and people (not saying you) still would not give him credit.

And it went further (again, not saying you, just responding in general as people do) they said he was stupid and scared or somehow incompetent.

But here are the Rams stats from 2021. If offense hadn't given up 2 points a game ... on pick sixes and such, plus two more turnovers inside the 10 that led to another two scores the scoring defense would have been top 5 ...

All of us have different ideas and beliefs, mine is that there was a massive overreaction to Morris as DC. Not even within the realm of fairness by some.

I reject that somehow he was stupid and scared in the 2021 regular season, smart and brave in the 2021 postseason, stupid and scared again last year, and now smart and brave. It's absurd.

But---because folks can take things the wrong way --- not saying that is you. Just replying in general about some folks who went over the line and not ones who ask fair questions and will be reasonable when given reasonable explanations.

With our past draft we're one draft and free agency period away from being one of the top teams in the NFL.

1. If Stafford stays healthy
2. They hit on FAs (maybe and edge, CB, whatever is there)
3. Draft well, does not even have to be like 2023 ... as long as the premium picks help

those three things happen, yes. Rams can make deep playoff run.

I’m watching Danielle Hunter moving around on the line.. add him to Donald… Turner and Young?

You’ll get to the QB with 4 consistently.. and that changes everything.

He's not my favorite but if he's best available, sure. He's a freak athlete. But I have trust issues with him. But, again, I cannot know for sure that something from a couple of years ago still matters.

Would prefer Burns. Maybe not quite as much of a freak, but more consistent, IMO. He's faster and smaller ... but it's possible he will want too much

All things being equal I'd take the faster, younger, most consistent guy. Hunter would be good, but IMO not as good a fit.

Just zero chance he hits FA. He’ll be tagged.

I’m zeroing in the guy who is guaranteed to hit FA.

Hunter can play... he's just more of a 40 end. He can stand up -- and he'd be a huge upgrade from Hoecht, that's for sure.

Or if a surprise meteor doesn't hit the planet.

My outlook is they have succeeded many more times than they've failed constructing highly competitive rosters over a 7 year period, so I'm fairly confident they'll improve the roster next year. But of course health is the great equalizer or downfall. We could say, if they had excellent health the last 7 years, they wouldn't have missed a postseason.

Amen. The "tanking" people just did not ake into account McVay's nature. It is not in him to tank, nor is it in Snead's DNA. It was absurd to say they would lose intentionally to get a high draft pick.

I was the same, give the people who got a Lombardi trophy the benefit of the doubt and realize 2022 was a disaster because of massive OL injuries and QB injury and injury to AD, etc.

2022 was a freakish injury year.

With all the mistakes on Defense today. Donald and Turner are playing their butts off. Donald must love having a guy next to him with a motor.
