Agree. McVay was totally responsible for elevating the Rams offense and putting Goff in a position to succeed with the Rams at that time. But he then lost patience with Goff as the offense deteriorated without a healthy Gurley and healthy oline. And no, I wouldn't wish Jeff Fisher on any young QB.

But vice versa, Goff was good enough to beat New Orleans and Drew Brees on the road in a really, really tough game to take the Rams to the Super Bowl. Goff was also a key to the Rams' success.

I still blame McVay for losing patience with Goff and even more for his immature public trashing of him. McVay knows it was bad behavior.

Regardless of what happened with the Rams, Goff has proven himself with Detroit. And Goff didn't blink faced with Stafford and McVay in the playoffs.
And rightly so, NFL = Not For Long and this isn't a place to let somebody suck on their thumb and get whatever after several years.

As being the biggest advocate of wanting Goff traded here on ROD and being called crazy for it it was the right move and McVay proved it was that very same year. Goff does not win that SB. Period.

Rothlisberger played behind some horrible Olines and still looked like a great QB. So did Stafford in Detroit and IIRC, Andrew Luck.

All I'm trying to say is that great QBs will look great even with no time. Goff has had games when he's looked awful and always looked rattled under pressure.

I'm not saying Goff isn't good, or even very good, I'm saying he's not great imho.
Rothlisberger was 6'5" 241 while Stafford 6'3" 231.

10 lbs and and two inches of leverage make a huge difference. And that's not included how much more he weighed later in his career.

This signing is complicated - its the Lions, and I think Goff is somewhere between league average and above average. Ultimately, they should be competitive/have a winning record with him consistently.

I think that their playoff success last year has escalated things for them though - they now have Super Bowl aspirations. How many years until Lions fans aren't accepting divisional round exits?

The other thing here...Brady and Mahomes have confused people into thinking you need to have a great QB, but if you look at the last Super Bowl winning QBs, it paints a slightly different picture:

Mahomes (GOAT 2.0)
Stafford (McVay + the Von Miller trade where we only paid him 2 million - Stafford deserves a ton of credit too, but those are the facts)
Brady
Foles
Peyton Manning (decrepit Peyton)
Wilson
Flacco
Eli manning

And then it gets even more interesting when you factor WHO Mahomes/Stafford/Brady prevented from winning a title along the way:

Purdy (rookie contract)
Hurts (rookie contract)
Burrow (rookie contract)
Jimmy G
Goff (rookie contract)

And all of those were CLOSE. When you factor that in alongside Foles/Peyton/Wilson (rookie contract)/Flacco/Eli - you have Brady and Mahomes who are EXTREME outliers - otherwise who is winning it all? Teams with either cheaper QBs or average QBs, who have an elite team built around them. These teams are so good that the list above had all those guys inches away from being the two GOATs.

So I'll say to Detroit what I wanted the Rams to do - shouldn't have signed him, and should have moved on to a rookie coming into an elite team around him IF you want to make or win the Super Bowl.
Fantastic post.

Quarterbacks can elevate a team, of course, but ultimately their success boils down to the quality of the team around them.

Another example, from the opposite perspective, is Dan Marino. At least as good as any of the quarterbacks mentioned, but no rings to show for it.

I know McVay has said he wishes he would have handled it better - but can you point to "immature public trashing"?

Because if your QB turns the ball over four times against Miami and three times against the Niners, the coach saying "Our QB needs to take better care of the football" is.....not that. I may be misremembering if there were other comments, that's the one that sticks out the most though.

Stafford is the QB that McVay wanted over Goff and the Rams made it happen. Does anyone really believe that any GM in the NFL would pick Goff over Stafford if given the choice?
Everyone needs to remember it was Stafford for:

QB Jared Goff
2022 first-round pick
2023 first-round
2021 third-round pick.

The Lions knew they needed a 2-3 year rebuild to get back to relevance and the Rams provided an option to launch that. I’m confident anyone associated with the Lions are satisfied with the results to date.

Everybody was laughing at him in his first year in Detroit. Couldn't win a game without Mcvay, etc.

Then midseason the Lions made Ben Johnson the oc and Josh Reynolds arrived. All it took was one average nfl wr and a rookie (st Brown) finding his groove for Goff to get his Mojo back and suddenly he had a Kurt Warner like rejuvenation. But with Brad Holmes leading the way did we expect any different for whatever team he was in charge of to get them off the floor.

Having a good oc definitely helps a qb.

.
That’s how it all appeared to me, too.
You mentioned holmes. The FO has done a great job of putting together that roster, helping out goff in the process as well.

The lions are legit, but they will now face the challenge of signing a QB to market value and trying to keep a top roster intact. I believe this is when the top FOs earn their $$.

I'm sorry but Goff was so fortunate Mcvay came into his career so early. Can you imagine if stan kept fisher around. Goff would have had no chance. So even if their partnership didn't end well Goff is so much better for having worked with Mcvay for 4 years.

.
Both what you said and what the poster you are responding to can be true. They are not mutually exclusive.

Goff was very fortunate with the McVay hire. McVay (by his own admission) didn't handle Goff well when things started to unravel. Both true.

And I'm glad McVay admitted that, because if he's around long enough to have another young QB he's developing, that QB will surely have some struggles and he will have to not repeat the same mistakes as he made with Goff, because it's not likely an elite guy like Stafford will be available for trade.

Same for me.

Hate definitely isn't the word - I feel like I see him for what he is. He's a solid QB who will look great when things are great around him, but is unlikely to carry a team. I say unlikely because we haven't yet seen him put into that position in Detroit - two OL injuries here, a WR injury there, the run game not working, etc. He absolutely couldn't do it here, we saw that.

I think for me, I still don't feel like there was enough "hey guys I was wrong" - we saw Stafford lead a game winning drive in the Super Bowl with a non existing run game, Brian Allen at center (everyone's favorite whipping boy) and nothing at WR besides Kupp....oh and down to our third TE.

You could not ask for a better demonstration of "was the trade worth it?" and yet we still have people who refuse to acknowledge it.

And now we're back to thinking he's as good as we thought in 2017/2018, all because he has the same level of talent around him that he did with us during those years. Its like we're living in the twilight zone. Context matters.
I don't think people are refusing to acknowledge that the trade was worth it but actually that we believe Goff is better than what some people believe.

Did Stafford lead the lions to a Super Bowl even with Calvin Johnson? No. He needed more support especially on defense.

The Rams gave Stafford a very good offensive line and weapons and a top of the line defense to get to the Super Bowl. But I give all the credit to Stafford coming thru the clutch in the playoffs and super bowl.

Could Goff have done that? Doubt it. But I still think he would have been good enough to get his team to the Super Bowl if the coach didn't do stupid stuff in the 49er game. The coach lost that game not Goff.

Congrats to Jared on earning that big contract. But I am not interesred in this victory lap celebration where some are determined to validate him as the QB of a contender. In fact that victory lap is more a circle jerk to my eye at least.

He got his bag. Now he has to produce. Time and big game results will determine what he is. I suspect he is the same old shrinking violet he always has been. A pansy who will fill his pants in the biggest moment with a panic load. We will see how this turns out.

Aside from being unreasonably and unnecessarily harsh, I don’t think those comments accurately reflect Goff’s post-season performances.

Yup, and they had other offers, but none of which included Jared Goff
Goff wasnt a throw away in that trade from Detroit's perspective, he was a major piece

The trade was good for both teams.

Not sure why people (not necessarily ROD people) have such a hard time with that concept.

What "bullshit"? I responded to one part of your post and then gave an "opinion" of the rest of it. Did you not say, "the next time he shows the ability to succeed when things are breaking down around him will, pretty much, be the first time"? Now you say "Goff worked completely within the structure"? Further proof of the inaccuracy of your original statement (the part I quoted). The structure of what? Kupp was injured and missed the game. The Rams couldn't run. CJ's longest run was 8 yards, Gurley's was 6 yards, the two of them ran 20 times for 54 yards (take out those two runs and they ran 18 times for 40 yards, 2.2 YPC!!! Some structure, eh?). The Rams trailed 20-10 with 8 minutes and change left in the 3rd and again 23-20 with 1:41 left in the game. And they won by 3 in OT!!! It's all good. That's your opinion. But as Tom Jackson used to say on TV, "come on man!"

And "it's not about Goff vs Stafford", yet anytime somebody gives the guy a hint of kudos, they quantify it by saying, "yebbit, yebbit, yebbit, he can't do what Stafford has done". We all love Stafford. We all know he's the better QB. But most can't give #16 a compliment without including that fact. That's the bullshit.
If you don’t understand what I’m saying, why respond?

Not understanding that “playing within structure” is one of Goff’s strengths and not understanding that was what he did in that game is on you.

Goff was sacked once.

He had an 83 rating, one TD and one INT.

GZ had four FGs.. four!! Including the incredible game winner.

You’re suggesting Goff did something special there?

Look up my posts on Goff, I’m always fair and have given him PLENTY of compliments.

I’m putting a gargantuan contract in context, that’s it.

For the immediate future.. it’s gonna be tough for anyone to win the SB with Mahomes around.

That being said.. I think the Lions with Goff are absolutely a contender to make the SB with Goff. They used the assets in the trade & other high picks to build a monster roster.

Good for him and them.

Statistically speaking he was a top 5 or 6 QB? Led his team to the NFCCG? Looks pretty market value if you take off the Goff hating lenses that some will see it through.

no hating lenses...just crystal-clear reality blueblockers.

Good for Goff. That trade has got to be one of the best trades ever for both sides. We win a super bowl with Matt, and they finally build themselves a team.

Goff was both better and worse than many want to admit. I don't think I've ever seen someone play the position with such a Jeckyl/Hyde personality. The guy could be nails and deliver dimes in the face of some pretty tough situations. Then he could completely fade in parts of games.

I will say that I have never seen a QB with poorer perception of pressure in the pocket. It's like he can't see defenders around him while he has the ball away from his body. I saw him do it in the playoffs as well. It's a recipe for a game changing disaster and we witnessed it (and McVay witnessed it) far too much. In the end with the Rams, Goff made far too many careless mistakes with the ball while not getting into the do anything to win attitude I think McVay covets.

I still like the player. And I'll admit that I have my doubts he can develop enough of a killer attitude to win the big one with his clutch play. But I wish him well as long as he's not playing against us and could see a time where if everything falls just right, he ends up on the winning side. I'm just not sure he does it from the side of adversity.

That being said, I really wish they'd reel in these QB contracts. But being that I believe we paid the last huge rookie contract to Bradford, I'm good with other teams paying ridiculous money now.

Mahomey, Allen, Stafford & Burrow are the only QB in the game I'd rather have than Goff, hands down.
The money is just ridiculous, but it's just the way things go

He has taken 2 teams to CCGs, one to a SB. Herbert hasn't got there yet. Lamar has got to the CCG but lost. Hurts and Burrow, like Goff have won CCG but lost the SB. How many active QBs have done more than Goff? Mahomes and Stafford. The guy has earned what he got. The key, IMO, is he's won with 2 teams.

let's see herbert with mcvay.
