Johnson and Goff spent a weekend together in the offseason two years ago after Johnson was named OC. They took three long days to watch film of Goff with the Rams and trade ideas about plays that would work. Johnson then redesigned the Lions' O. The immediate result next year was a powerhouse offense. This what happens when a coach works with, not against, his quarterback.
Contrast this with McVay, who publicly blamed Goff for the failure of McVay's own offense after the running game (Gurley) and the oline (Saffold and Allen) took significant hits. McVay lacked the patience to adapt his offense to its actual capabilities and lacked the patience to work with Goff (although he was willing to sign him to an expensive contract.)
Goff has never trashed any teammate or coach.
But in the grand scheme of things the situation seems to have worked out. McVay got a Super Bowl. Goff may well get one in Detroit. And even if he doesn't, Goff will make ten times as much money, or more, than McVay could ever think about.
I'm sorry but Goff was so fortunate Mcvay came into his career so early. Can you imagine if stan kept fisher around. Goff would have had no chance. So even if their partnership didn't end well Goff is so much better for having worked with Mcvay for 4 years.
