Let's get this straight - for the last 7 years every time a rams position coach has been poached away because there was no opportunity for internal progression this board has bitched and moaned about it.

Now the specific opposite has happened and we are still bitching and moaning?

NOW ... you understand.

And ...
Every time the Rams lose a close game it's either because the Refs are incompetent, biased against the Rams or the game/NFL is rigged ... Or ... All Three.

I see this as (mostly) a continuity hire as well as a qualified hire.

It will benefit the young guns on D who were onboarded by Morris.

I 100% agree.

McVay's record is so fucking good that I'm always going to trust him. He could have hired @ottoman89, and I've begrudgingly been okay with it.

Also, he must REALLY rate the guy to hire in-house because that isn't his MO at all.

I love it.
That poor soul if he would've! Haha

After a dozen beers I'm liking this even less.
Nothing impressive about this guy except his last name.
I hope he proves me wrong.

Oh, and I don't want McVay anywhere the defense. He's got enough on his plate as head coach AND play caller. He needs to step up his red zone offense in particular, not becoming defensive coordinator number two.
Yeah, I like it less and less as it goes on.

Feels like one of those fast, just get it done hires because he has so much staff to replace.

Once again, you can't tell me he's better than the available names. There's absolutely zero chance.

There's absolutely zero chance you have any idea on how this hire will go.

It's always possible it does t go well. But the nepotism claims are idiotic. The jumping the gun to be negative are just for the chance that if it doesn't work is to pat the back and say "see I was right"

McVay seems to have an eye for picking good assistant coaches and he knows Shula very well. The Rams interviewed a number of coaches for this DC job and seemed to have done their homework. I am very interested to see what Shula does with this opportunity, after all he comes from good bloodlines.

I am definitely taking a wait and see approach on this hire.

I haven't really heard anything about Shula so I have no clue how he will do.

I trust McVay to find good coaches when he has time to do searches (after the Super Bowl year he was really stuck on time with his searches).

1. The nepotism talk was a joke. I deal with nepotism being an Iowa Hawkeye fan so I know what it is. Was a joke about Sean hiring his buddy.

2. This isn't so I can say "I told you so". I just genuinely don't like this hire at the moment. Really wanted someone outside of the organization. I will say, I'd much rather it be Shula than Pleasant.

I just really don't like it.

I hope to God it works out and he doesn't run a similar scheme and philosophy to the Raheem bend but don't break. Tired of being a soft, pushover defense. I wanted someone that's going to instill attitude and physicality mentalities into the trip.

Tired of being the bitch of a defense, I want to be the mean mother fuckers for a change.

For those upset, disappointed, angry about the hire, I'd offer this possibility. I've read he may be the closest friend McVay has and IF McVay truly wanted Evero but was blocked.....for this offseason.....who better to take the job as a place holder? On the other hand, he's coached a lot of positions, has experience in Phillips system, Staley's system and Morris' system. He probably has a handle on what tweaks he would make and intimate knowledge of what McVay wants in a defense. It may just be he's put in his time, done everything asked of him and aced the interview. But fans know differently?

Sure this is his first go as a DC and he's not a big name like Staley or Wink Knowitall but how many SB defenses have those two designed? Staley was a DC for all of 1 year (2020) and had the #1 scoring defense and #1 yardage defense, averaged 26 PPG allowed in the postseason (2 G). Martindale has been a DC for three teams, 8 years (2010 and 2018-2023). He has had the #1 defense in points twice (2019 & 2020) and yards twice (2018 & 2019) and holds a 23.8 PPG against average in the postseason (5 G). Plus there are rumors he's difficult to work with and a backstabber. Who needs that? Seems a perfect fit for the Cowboys clusterfook, though I've read Mike Zimmer could come out of retirement to man that position.

Anybody can question the hire. That's easy. What's difficult is offering actual reasons it's a bad hire. Or not as good as some of the big names who are still out there without a DC job.

After reading all your opinions, I feel good about this hire.

If he's going to continue running Morris scheme, I hope he has some nasty funk he can add to it!

So it sounds like there are 3 camps for the most part...

1. Like the hire. Shula has earned this and has the best knowledge of Rams scheme and culture and can hit the ground running. Full sprint. In McVay we trust.

2. Wait and see (like we have a choice). Not ecstatic about the hire but understand the logic and hope things work out. In McVay we trust, but he is not infallible.

3. Full whambulance. Shula sucks and was the worst possible hire available. Total throw away. Rushed. Argue with a wall. (these are the posters who follow each other around giving each other thumbs up and thread winners for donning the pitchfork and torches with them.... it's cute :)).

I was kinda hoping for a minority DC. So when he gets poached for a head coach job we get two more comp picks. We all know McVay will have a hand in the defense and the system. So the DC position itself is not critical to have an established guy with proven success.

Over-complaining or nonconstructive complaining is bad for health, and produces estrogen, even. (diff. article)

and projection also issue. Toughest people -- people who could drop all of us, you, me, in a heartbeat never talk tough or want things to be tough. The opposite types of people do -- projection.

Not good for overall health

Shula wasn't my personal first choice, but I trust in McVay to know who's ready and be prepared. Some people seem to forget Staley's first 4 games with us were not #1 defense stats, hopefully Shula is given some leeway for the first few games.

So we’re upset because we did’t hire a coach with enough star power. Truth is we know almost nothing about this guy. How can people confidently say it’s a bad hire? We got almost no info on how he would run a defense
