Pulled this one back from the depths..
Alaric Jackson is a solid left tackle. Not a top-tier guy.. but grades out a little above average on PFF, which reflects the eye test.

And.. we've discussed what his weight REALLY is before... Rams website updated his info... he's listed now as 345.
This is a pet peeve of mine.
Teams usually don't or rarely update weights on their info.
I remember seeing Seymore, the Pats and other NT, listed at 330lbs forever even though he was clearly closer to or over 400lbs.
Often a players weight won't change from when they were drafted ever.

I think you mean Vince Wilfork but I completely agree about up-dating weights.

And supposedly there's no LT's coming available in F/A that's any better than A.Jax.
I agree with you: They should pay AJ. However, there are a couple of LTs coming available in free agency who are better than him: Garrett Bolles and Ronnie Stanley.

Unfortunately, although we are rid of Noteboom after the season, he'll still cost 10 mill in '25
I understand football fans not wanting to get into the salary cap ... it's not fun, and it's not football. However, it is a huge part of the NFL.

The Rams committed big-$ to Joseph Noteboom after they won the 2021 Lombardi; and most of the money has long been paid ... and the checks have been cashed.

However, because of how the extension (and re-structure) were written, the Rams did not take big cap hits in either 2022 or 2023. In fact, Noteboom's 2022 cap hit was a meaningless $3.5M. Last year (2023) his cap hit was a relatively low $6.5M.

That WAS the good news!

The BAD News is that at some point, there has got to be a big cap hit ... and ... that comes this year ($11.6M) and next year (another $10M), even though Noteboom will be a free agent.

Boles will be 33 next year; and careful what you wish for with Stanley.

Joseph Noteboom has actually been more durable over the past five seasons (2020-2024). While Noteboom has missed 29 games, Ronnie Stanley has missed 36!

Yeah, I know about Bolles' age. That's why he will likely hit free agency. There would be no chance at all for that if he were 29. It's the same reason the Rams were able to sign Andrew Whitworth. He's worth the risk IMO just like Whitworth was because elite LTs often play into their late 30s.

I didn't realize Stanley's injury history was as extensive as it is. I'd probably pass on him.

Though they could cut him with a post June 1 designation and split the cap hit over two years.

It really changes a bunch.. I'm not sure why they don't.. but they really don't usually update it.

With AJ, he had acknowledged it. I have posted a few times over the years how he switched his diet back to being a meat eater after going vegan or vegetarian at Iowa his senior year. I'm sure there's more to it than that.. but, yeah.. he put on a ton of weight.

IIRC, the cap hit was going to be $20 mil. this season if he played and $15 mil. if they cut him, but they extended him. They're paying him around $6 mil. and lowered this year's cap hit to $11.6 mil.

If they were to keep adding years to his contract and lowering what they're paying him to play, the eventual big cap hit is decreasing. I'm not recommending this, but it's possible they could do the same thing again next year. For example, if they were to add two void years, pay him a $4 mil. signing bonus and a $2 mil. salary for 2025, they would save $2 mil. with him playing on the team versus cutting him. And if they were to cut him in 2026, the cap hit would be $8 mil. instead of $10 mil. for 2025. In theory, they could keep extending by a year or two as long as they feel he's useful as a backup.

Is that how that works? I have no idea.
Yes.
He has 2 void years on the re-structured deal. Technically its 5 mill of dead money in '25 and 5 mill of dead money in '26. However, once a contract voids, all of the dead money accelerates. So once his contract is voided, the Rams get hit with the 10 mill
The contract voids before the new league year so there's no way to cut him before the contract voids

That's chump change compared to the cap hits they've been prepared to endure over the years.

Gurley, cooks, goff, Robinson.

Is all good.
