Texans ship Brock Osweiler and a second-round pick to Cleveland

Week 17 altercation was last straw for Texans and Osweiler
Posted by Mike Florio on March 12, 2017

So when did the Texans decide it was time to move on from quarterback Brock Osweiler despite a contract that pays $16 million guaranteed in 2017? The decision was made in the aftermath of an incident that occurred on the first day of the calendar year.

January 1. Texans at Titans. Backup-turned-starter Tom Savage took a hit on a quarterback sneak during the first play of the second quarter and was removed for a concussion evaluation. Starter-turned-backup Brock Osweiler entered the game.

Confusion emerged during the second quarter as to whether Savage had been cleared to return to action. At halftime, Savage got the news: He was being shut down for the day.

Per a source with knowledge of the situation, Savage became very upset, knocking things around in the locker room and otherwise making a ruckus about having his status jeopardized by a doctor’s decision to keep him from playing. At or about the same time, coach Bill O’Brien informed Osweiler that he’d be finishing the game.

Osweiler, per the source, reacted negatively, telling O’Brien in the visiting coach’s office at Nissan Stadium in Nashville that he’s only playing Osweiler because O’Brien needs him. [Editor’s note: That’s sort of how football depth charts work.]

An argument ensued, voices were raised. At one point, it’s believed that Osweiler got up to walk away and O’Brien threw out an arm to stop him. That prompted Osweiler to act as if he were being “held hostage,” a claim that he would repeat (per the source) in the days after the game.

And that was that for Osweiler in Houston. Following that incident, the team was determined to find a way to move on from him.

Rumors of an incident of some sort had been percolating for weeks. Both O’Brien and Osweiler downplayed talk of a loud argument in the days after the game. Following the hot potato trade that sent Osweiler and a second-round pick to Cleveland, former NFL defensive back Bryant McFadden said in an appearance on 120 Sports that Osweiler and O’Brien had a “physical confrontation that got ugly.”

“It was physical,” McFadden said. “It was physical. The players and coaches had to restrain O’Brien and Brock.”

Both the Texans and Osweiler’s agent, Jimmy Sexton, declined to comment on McFadden’s claims. Based on the information PFT has obtained, it seems that the incident was mildly physical at worst.

Consider it objectively. Osweiler is six-seven, and he was wearing full pads. O’Brien is considerably shorter than that and, unlike the conventional game-day attire in baseball, was not wearing pads and a uniform.

Whatever did (or didn’t) happen between the two of them, Osweiler’s perceived overreaction to the incident was, we’re told, the moment the Texans decided to move on from Osweiler.

Patriots get Brandin Cooks

That's actual reportage coming from NO.

The Bensons may have to sell and they aren't going to saddle any new group with big contracts nor are they going to pay any big signing bonuses to benefit the next owner.

Not Brandin Cooks nor anyone else is gonna sign a big contract there esp if it requires a big signing bonus.

That Cooks had other issues only made it easier to pull the trigger.

Lance Kendricks to Green Bay

Kendricks actually was having a really good year and seemed to be putting it all together until the drops got to him. It wouldn't have been so bad and people might have forgotten about the drops but for their magnitude.

You can't drop uncontested, easy catches where you have no opposition players around you for yards. I mean, come on. Those are catches even middling high school players should make. And when making the catch would have resulted a game winning TD... people are going to be upset.

I actually liked Kendricks. He was always a professional, seemed like a good person, and I never questioned his effort. He had some good games for us and contributed. But he is what he is at this point - an average player that is replaceable. I wish him well in GB.

Quick Day 3 of Free Agency Mock ... 3 Trades

Yea. I am absolutely preparing for catastrophe considering Gordon's total inability to stay on the field. Do you not remember us having this same debate last year?

The point I'm making is that we shouldn't treat Gordon as a lock to play. He's far from that. The guy might play again in the NFL, but he also might not.
Whoever takes the flyer on Gordon needs to almost expect he will slip up.

Post Combine Fan Mock 1

I also saw Hodges play....Looks like a future beast. He has "Gods Gift" tattooed on the back of both arms. Like that too.

I will never understand the Hodges love. He's such a buyer beware kid. People fall for the guy because he's an athlete, but he's a TE who doesn't block and doesn't catch the ball well. He's basically Jared Cook.

Any RB selected should be of the udfa variety....never heard of this guy....I'll check him out...Still holding out hope for Mixon....Think he falls to the 7th...Anywho, any back must compliment Gurley...that means fast, scat-back, 3rd down receiver type...is this Abdulla?

I bet Mixon goes in Round 3 or 4.

Still waiting for someone to find a place for one of those Fl. LB's Davis & Anazolne (how do you spell his name?)... Hell, I'm still liking that pit bull like dude from Tenn. Maybin. Ogletree needs a running mate, so we can move Barron back to SS/FS

Reeves-Maybin is too small. Most people are avoiding Davis because we'd have to take him in the second. I'd avoid Anzalone because he can't stay healthy.(love his game when he's on the field, though)

Robert Quinn's role

I am a bit confused by this situation ..... looks like Quinn is going to be asked to play a position he's never played before ; WLB in the 3-4, playing standing up on both left and right side of the formation. In comparison, he's only played with his hand in the dirt as a RDE in the 4-3. Also, he's going to count 11-Mil against the cap this next season and he's missed 15 games the past 2 seasons. And, when he was playing, he didn't produce much ; PFF grade this past season, 60.6. Yet, William Hayes played in 14 games this past season, had a rating of 83.4 and had a much lower Cap number. We're told that the new Defensive system is very similar to a 4-3, with the lineman play single gaps, as opposed to a 2-gap style in the old days, but Hayes is determined to have no value in it. Yeah, I get that Hayes is older and can't play that same WLB position, but no consideration for LDE? Does anyone else see an issue with this?
I thought hayes would work great at end but i think it was more about saving cap space and getting rid of the "Fisher guys " . They have something big planned here and i can't wait

McVay on the Centre Position

One thing McVay was part of in Wash. was turning around the OL (albeit it coincided with the arrival of GM McCloughan and OL coach Callahan, as well as the ascendancies of Cousins and Jordan Reed).

For the first time in decades the Redskins were able to provide time to their QB and keep him upright. I think this will be a strength he's bringing to LA most might not be aware of.

Kenny Britt Expected to Sign with the Browns

Kenny Britt wasn't the problem. He signed on a 1 year $1.5M prove-it deal then outperformed that contract and every other Rams WR on the roster. He signed a 2 year $9M test deal then outperformed that contract and every other Rams WR on the roster. Now he's gone and people are pissed at him.

He's a good 2nd tier WR. He's a $7M player with $14M potential. I wondered what would happen if he asked for $8.5-9M and the Browns answered that. They paid him. Fair play to them.

The Rams WR problem last year was not having someone better than Britt as our #1 WR and not having someone better than Austin as our #3 WR. I'm hoping Woods fills 1 of the top 2 roles but we still need another WR to go with him. Better #3 WR play from the players we currently have is also a need.

Number 1 overall pick... Offensive Guard!

Saffold was a T and drafted as a T. Only in recent years did he move inside, usually with good results.
Even if all the rest busted (too early to tell with the current crop) that doesn't mean would stop trying to find them.
The OP is like the guy who has a break up and swears off relationships forever...the. Comains about being lonely.
Gotta break a few eggs in the kitchen man.
Uhhh no im not. I'm speaking directly to an observation. I have zero problem drafting online, Do I wish we had better luck? of course. Strictly an observation.

That's gotta be the end of Rousey's career

At the very least, Holm should have had a draw. That was some of the worst reffing I've ever seen.

I agree with Rogan, too that BOTH shots after the bell should have included point deductions as BOTH were deliberate by a veteran fighter.

I don't care who she was fighting, Germaine was dirty in that fight and she should have been pointed on the first after the bell and either pointed again or DQ'd.
Draw or not, Holm has been a disappointment. Now I wasn't impressed with her in wins vs Pennington or Reneau leading up to the Rousey fight, so the 3 losses after aren't a surprise to me. (Or 2 losses and a draw)

Draftable Players linked to Rams

Browsing the site to find the players that are linked to the Rams.

Unfortunately we're not mentioned in this fan favorite.

That's all I saw browsing those pro-day reports that we were linked to. Probably just a lack of us getting our scouts and coaches out there and visible.
That was just one site. And as the process ( a McVayism :D ) more sightings and reports will pop up
