Interesting perspective from Joe Thomas. it made me think about McVay's longevity as well.

I never liked Joe Thomas.

I think he lacks perspective in this particular situation. It’s Irsay. The guy is a bumbling fool when it comes to his team.

It’s not an insult. It’s just dumb. But it would be funny if Saturday was successful, and now I hope he is.

A lot of people laughed at John Lynch wanting to be a GM.

Joe Thomas is right. It is an insult to the coaches - not Saturday, but the assistants of the Colts - to be passed over for a guy who had never coached in his life. It's an insult to every coach who deserved an opportunity over Saturday.

Lynch is different; he was interviewed along with several other candidates and won the spot. Saturday? Not so much; Irsay only hired him because he was a friend.

All we hear about is how difficult it is for former players to become coaches. Retired players who have spent their entire lives learning and playing football have to start at the bottom as an assistant or position coach. Finally a player gets a shot at a head coaching position, and the media and fans feign indignation as if being a head coach of an NFL franchise is some holy, prestigious position awarded only to those deserving.

Have we forgotten how much of a shit show Urban Meyer-- a lifelong coach and member of the old boys club-- in Jacksonville was last year? The clutching of pearls in relation to this story is so hilarious to me.

To make matters worse, there is no offensive coordinator since Reich fired Brady 2 weeks ago.
With Matt Ryan and Jonathon Taylor both practicing again, I'd be giving a big Hell Nah, to playing under these circumstances
Its a total joke and embarrassment to the league

He's piling on. Lot of media doing that right now and unfortunately they are probably right. But yeah it would be cool to see Saturday do well.

He is going to lose a ton of games though, and I think that is the plan. Irsay trusts him to lose games, the two are tight and this way he doesn't have to worry about one of these holdover coaches outing him to the media when that will be an item of discussion the remainder of the season. Irsay wants a high pick IMO and it's not a bad plan given where his team is.

As to the hiring rules I don't think this would have been a good audition for any black coach who would have been considered. It's not a good audition for anyone to lose games which is why he gave it to a guy he trusts. Saturday will undoubtedly receive an offline bonus if he gets the team to a certain range of picks up top. Irsay IMO is an old guy who feels death knocking at his door, he is not interested in picking midround when his team needs a QB.

How is it an insult when no potential head coach in their right mind would want that job right now anyway?

Irsay is a bumbling boob, who has been overly interjecting his thoughts and desires on the direction of the team. It’s a lose/lose situation.

Imo he and Saturday did the league a favor

That makes a lot of sense.

I cant believe there are folks who are actually defending this behavior.
Its an insult to the league, the players and specifically any progress made recently in hiring protocols
Hiring an interim coach should require the coach currently be on the teams coaching staff, or else it is subject to Rooney rule

The same league that allows Watson, Hunt, Hill, etc to play? This is an insult? LMAO. What a strange hill to die on.

I think players who've devoted their entire life to the game having to start as glorified water boys to get into coaching is a bigger insult. The league is the players.

I'm sure some people in the coaching ranks took the Rams hiring a 30 year old McVay as an insult.

It’s not like Indy lacks coaches already on the team. Why not pick one of them? Those kinds of coaches work their asses off to coach in this league, and Irsay chooses his BFF?

That shows an enormous lack of respect.

Dude the guy retired 10 years ago.
Alas, clearly by the lack of coherence in your response, there is no point in trying to discuss

I mean, is it that bad of an idea? Jeff has been around the best, won a SB with Peyton. He knows what it takes to win. Worst case scenario they tank and get a top 5 pick. Alternatively, he could wind up being a great hire. Personally, I’d love to see him do well.

I disagree. Do you think any of them want that job after Reich getting canned? Irsay is a major fuck up and that job is death to a career. Saturday is likely the only one he had to turn to.

There are only thirty-two head coaching jobs in the NFL. You can't imagine that the assistants wouldn't want one of them? Imagine you working hard for decades upon decades in one area. Then your boss gets fired, and the head honcho brings in some guy who never worked at your position at your level ever to be your new boss.

It's insulting to those hardworking assistant coaches to have Saturday plopped into the head coaching role when he never coached in college, much less the NFL.

First of all, No I wouldn’t want that job.

Secondly, people get too easily offended without looking at the big picture. Until a coach comes forward and says it’s offensive it’s just media spin, something to rile the masses.

My take is....

Who gives a fuck?

Sorry, but the next time I think about Indy will be the first time. If Saturday tanks? Meh. If he succeeds? Good for him.

I'm not saying that y'awl should stop talking about it. Knock yourselves out. I guess I just don't get why any of you care.

Oh we'll. Cheers

McVay’s age was the only “negative” on his resume, he’d been in pro football coaching for 8 years, but I get what you’re saying.
