Lawrence Phillips is a very sad story, a guy that seemed to be capable of being exceptional in terms of NFL production and not for being
a complete disappointment.
Mike Schad can be put in there with Robinson & Smith as OL misses
I wanted Eddie George over Lawrence Phillips, I also wanted Marvin Harrison over Eddie Kennison. Steve Ortmayer & Rich Brooks were just clueless.

Schad did not work out for the Rams, played decent for the Eagles, however, in the 2nd round the Rams drafted Tom Newberry out of Wisconsin-La Crosse and he worked out just fine.

Newberry was a stud, what were we thinking taking Kennison over Harrison

There is so many to choose from, but I'd have to currently go with Greg Robinson since he could quite literally still be on our team if he was even average. Back a bit further, Tavon Austin is one that I was always hoping for some semblance of his college play once we drafted him. We only got glimpses and it hurts.

Now, now we can only talk about the ones we drafted. :laugh4:

I would love to hear Les go through their decision making process on Greg Robinson. Because I have to think there were warning signs with him. There had to be moments where you question what you're doing then willfully ignore those healthy doubts in your head.

Before GRob and Jason Smith there was another disappointing 1st rd tackle taken.

Mr False Start; Alex Barron.

In those days we should have just terminated all of our scouting and drafting personnel and sub contracted that function out to a team like the Steelers.

Kennison was bigger and could return punts plus was faster in the 40. However, they didn't realize Eddie couldn't run routes very good.

So many first round picks that never panned out.

Eddie Kennison (Who they picked over Marvin Harrison)
Trung Canidate
Jason Smith
Sam Bradford
Greg Robinson (Coulda had Kalil Mack to pair with Aaron Donald)
Tavon Austin

Some of those guys were either huge disappointments or flat out busts. I can see why they decided to use their picks for proven players rather than unknowns from college.

Thankfully we didn't draft Ryan Leaf or this would be a 1 post thread.

I always think of the trading miscues. Dropping back and passing up Wagner and moving up and taking Austin when we could have stood pat and drafted Hopkins.

As far as the players we picked, Robinson and Smith top the list. We have had a rough time picking OT over the years.

RB and OL have had similar paths HOF and whiffs.

Jerome Bettis being a life long Ram would have made a huge difference. That wasn’t him not working out though.

John Cappelletti was Heisman winner that never developed to his great “potential”.

I jest, but happy he got his life turned around. He’s actually a very solid commentator and sports writer.

Les = Auburn homer, at least back then.
