Rams part ways with several assistants, including special teams coordinator and defensive backs coach

The Los Angeles Rams are coming off of the worst season of the Sean McVay era, and while their head coach is returning for 2023, many of his assistants are not. Wednesday, the Rams parted ways with several assistant coaches.

Per CBS Sports NFL insider Jonathan Jones, Rams special teams coordinator Joe DeCamillis, defensive backs coach Jonathan Cooley and offensive line coach Kevin Carberry were not retained. ESPN reports that assistant defensive line coach Skyler Jones and defensive assistant Lance Schulters will not be retained either. The Athletic reports that outside linebackers coach Thad Bogardus had his contract expire, and that he will not be returning either. McVay has reportedly been evaluating replacements, and interviewing candidates over the last several days.

The Rams will also have to replace their offensive coordinator, as Liam Coen already left for the college ranks, joining the Kentucky Wildcats as their new offensive coordinator. Rams defensive coordinator Raheem Morris on the other hand has received some attention on the coaching carousel from the Denver Broncos and Indianapolis Colts.

L.A. went 5-12 in 2022 and missed the playoffs for just the second time since McVay took over. While the Rams suffered through several notable injuries on both sides of the ball, McVay clearly feels as though his staff did not do all it could when it came to fielding a successful squad this season. The adversity from this past year hasn't dampened McVay's spirit, however. He's ready to rebound.
"I wanted to take some time to really know I could restore and renew the passion and zest I need and after leaning on family and friends and taking time to reflect it became clear to me," McVay told Fox Sports in his first comments since announcing his return to Los Angeles. "I don't want to run away from adversity, I want to run through it."

8 Coaches now gone, counting Center and Samples who had already left. This is a massive turnover. Carberry is no surprise.

Essentially this appears to confirm that, at least in McVay's eyes, there was more wrong with the Rams than just injuries. And a serious need for change moving forward.

That rookie head coach (McVay) PICKED his experienced Defensive Coordinator (Phillips).

The Jets Ownership / Front Office PICKED the experienced Defensive Coordinator FOR their new Coach.

Similarly, reports are saying Carolina' Ownership is looking to hire a Defensive Coordinator FOR its new Coach.

It's NOT a young/old thing. It's a who makes the decision thing. See a big difference?
Bones was sort of nit really chosen by Mcvay. That’s a 3rd phase of the game..

Cool article but, I don’t see anything about that quoted. The one line says McVay was quick to go after Phillips seemingly after he had been told he was hired.

In any account it was a great day to be a Rams
It was McVay's decision to retain Fassel.

Fassel was not forced on the new head coach by Ownership / Front Office. That's the point.
You’re exactly right!! Yeah - Mcvay has always run his own show. The Wade thing was what solidified him The Rams job. It was his choice & that was one of the main reasons he had to move on from Wade Phillips.
It was like having training wheels. He let Wade do his own thing. When his contract was over he needed to move on.This was his first season without a Phillips. When The Rams won the Superbowl it Wes who he hugged first. Sean Mcvay could have went & got any DC he wanted to with HC experience. That was Demoff’s requirements and what I was saying. What happened with the Jets is whatever it is.That organization is F’d up.

Don’t know where the other post were about Rams coaching changes. I know I was pointing somewhere about a bunch of these coaches getting let go.

The 2 were Coach Joe D .

Especially Careberry - EVERYONE WANTED to give give an out.

His first training camp he got COVID!! Just want to thank Zak Kromer & his dad Aaron Kromer for how they’ve handle the O”Line under Mcvay. Will be interesting how that job is filled.

Funny how Cooley got fired!!

Coach of Dean’s favorite coach

Thad is gone & Shula shouldn’t have been coaching The CB’s.Jrry wants Aubrey Pleasant back, which would be awesome, but looking forward to how the DB COACHing staff played out.

Last year, thought it was ODD changing successfully coaches that did amazing jobs & place them out of there element.

Who knows if anyone else leaves to pursue their careers further ?

Yes - that would sting if Zac Robinson & Eric Henderson both leave with Raheem Morris to the Colts. — A joke to think Jeff Saturday could even hold his coffee cup.(lucky he got a cup of coffee in the NFL with no coaching experience) as a Head Coach.

Easy solution to that problem: promote Henderson to DC. He's certainly deserving.

Justin Outten has a TEs background under Matt LaFleur - a position that may come back open if Rams decide to expand Thomas Brown's role with RBs/coordinating run game and as asst. head coach (Brown also interviewing for HC jobs, another reason it could formally come open).

The #Rams also requested an interview with #Broncos OC Justin Outten for a job on their remodeled offensive staff, per source.

On page 1 of this thread, I posted that I would mostly sit this one out because many of McVay's hirings were coaches I knew little or nothing about when they were hired by the Rams ... like Sean McVay himself!

The Rams TE coaches have had success. Thomas Brown should have never been a TE’s Coach except it showed how much Mcvay trust in him.

The Rams need some TE’s for Outeen to coach.Need more depth & help from them.

Quite frankly McVay wanted to give Chris Shula more reasonability and he did that by adding defensive Backs/Pass Game coordinator to his resume, but it's clear Shula is more of a linebacker coach and the OLB's suffered under Thad Bogardis.

As to Jonathan Cooley, they blocked him from going to Minnesota, so he was though of highly, however, that combination of Cooley & Shula obviously did not work. Was shocked they did part ways with Kevin Carberry, but glad they are going in another direction.

Well there you have it. What will happen with Brian Allen(another theead) . You kept the thinking of Cooley being some UP & COMING COACH. Maybe thought more of him than Aubrey (EVERO) ?
The fact Evero left The Rams we’re left with a HOLE & needed to add a CB’s coach. I guess Mcvay thought Cooley knew The Rams defense & Trusted in Shula to learn & support that DB group. He knew Jalen would be happy having Shula?

Whatever happened The facts are Thad wasn’t as good of a coach(respected) as Shula
—Careberry STUNK IMO however shocked you were & liked him.He did get FIRED!!
Hiring a new RB’s coach was a HUGE MISTAKE by Sean Mcvay. The realships Brown(brown) had with Cam Akers helped him thrive late like his rookie season.
What happens to other Rams coaches will be interesting as well when the smoke clears.
Does Raheem Morris get the HC job in INDY ? I also take his interview(won’t here it anywhere else) with the Vikings last season, like the raiders HC interview with USC OC that got Kiffin hired.??? Interesting to me?

Anyway Wes leaving to the Vikings hurt The Rams more than any Rams Fan ever post about !!!!
Plus Evero as well.
Those 2 COACHING changes HURT because of how GREAT they were for The Rams!!!!!

Sean Mcvay’s coaching tree is special (very) & Shula &!Brown we’re GREAT at there positions. At least Thomas Brown. Shula I wonder, because The Rams pass rush & he was a LBers coach under Staley. Well not sure ? Because Joe Barry was LBers coach, but then became assistant HC? However that played out Shula has moved around since 2017.

—Zak Kromer is an interesting Mcvay 2017 Coach. He was excellent as a O”Line coach with his dad & Andy Dickerson. He was promoted to TE’s coach when Thomas Brown moved to RB’s coach. The TE’s were sort of his specialty when The TE’s did blocking drills way back. If you looked at the improvement the last 3(4) games they really helped out in the run game(Hopkins).

Would love that but they'd have to offer him the OC gig in order to get him. No way Cleveland lets him walk
Cleveland may not have a say. My recollection is that assistant coach contracts are often for three years. Callahan has been in Cleveland for three years. If his contract expired, Cleveland has no power to block the move.

Two words: Bobby Evans.
It’s a lot more than just him, don’t fool yourself.

I was upset about the progression of Big Rob Hav.

I didn’t like the separation of players either.

The 1 player who totally regressed was Big Max. He had promise & I saw him get isolated.Team unity wasn’t there.
Big Rob tried to play Whitworths role & it didn’t go so well.In fact maybe it is time for him to go & let the Yourh In!!
