Yeah but what happened to 2020 and 2021

If they had done one or two OL picks in total for those two years in the first 4 rounds, we would have been in better shape last year on our bench.

After the first few back-ups went down, we had to play Evans and Kolone last year when they shouldn't have even been on the team.

Where are they now?
Well, they picked 4 OL in rds 3,4,& 5 in 18' & 19'. However, sure they should draft at least one each yr in the top 120 or so picks. Then again they didn't have a ton of high picks outside of the 20' draft. And they were in need of playmakers at that point, at RB, WR and pass rush. They all didn't work out, but Akers & Jefferson have been ok.

Snead/McVay referred to the Saints interior Oline of a few years ago and how well they protected Brees. So it does seem like they are using that as a goal.

Why did it take Stafford being seriously injured for them to say, we need better interior Oline play. Some of us have been talking about this for a few years now.

It’s the same with backup QB. We all knew that the backups wouldn’t be any good if they had to play. Now we have a fourth round backup instead of some UDFA QBs.

It seems like some of the priorities have been changed, which is great. Sometimes I think McVay is so intense that he cannot really address issues like these things. Then it takes a wake up call to remind him.

I think the Rams deserve a decent amount of crap for a lot of things but I won't hold a historic amount of injuries on the oline against them last year. They did look at add Bruss last year to bolster the oline and if Bruss had developed/not gotten injured, a line of healthy Noteboom - Edwards - Allen - Bruss - Hav could have been above average.

In all fairness their 1st pick last yr was a OG.
In round 4. I’m so happy that they picked one of the best Olineman in the draft. We’ve heard several times through the years that the Rams model does not value Interior Olinemen and Linebackers. This move seems like a change of attitude

I don’t think that line is very good. 3/5ths are jags one is a rookie and Havenstein has always been solid.

Consider how many of the Rams starting Oline last year, would be starters on real contending teams in the league.

Will correct you on the bolded: Bruss was a third round pick. A late third round pick, yes, but a third round pick.

I think there is a legitimate chance that they are dreaming on an interior line of McClendon-Avila-Bruss for 2024.
I like/love your train of thought. If an offensive tackle from the back-to-back NCAA champions is available when we picked him, then we stole something. Georgia was not armed with Ohio St and Ala offensive talent the last 2 seasons, yet they won it all. Popgun arm QB (Bennett), and other than Pickens (WR/ Steelers3rd round), what else did their O have other than our next year's 1sr round pick, Brock Bowers? The key to their winning was an outstanding defense and an OFFENSIVE line that dominated the trenches. McClendon might not be an immediate starter but by the end of the season he may be on honorable mention all-rookie teams. Obviously, my most excited draft pick not name Avila.

It’s amazing how much better Snead has got at drafting in the mid-late rounds since Fisher was replaced by McVay! Fisher definitely fucked things up by having too much say in decisions, but also, McVay and Snead are more simpatico in how they see a player.

I really like this pick and our draft in general. We have a brilliant brain trust and long may it continue

Man, Edwards really got no love around here.

He was good for his second season. Then he started to decline. He was not good after Whitworth retired.

I was happy when they drafted Noteboom, Allen, and Edwards. I was hopeful that they got some good players. Allen and Noteboom were terrible their first year. Noteboom has always been a backup type. Allen, may have been a great center mentally and but he was never a great player physically. Then the injuried knee became too much. I’m elated with the Avila pick.

Bruss was behind Coleman on the depth chart before his injury. If one or two of the drafted players had been above average it would have gone a long way. The line lacked any dominant players after Whit.

Once colleges started running read and shoot, spread type offenses, it seems that if you want a great Olineman you’ve got to take them early. First or second round seems to be the way to go.

Yeah but they completely ignored the OL in 2020 and 2021 when there was a HUGE need at center.

Blythe just sucked in 2020 and who knew Allen was going to be okay in 2021

I totally agree. It's why I was so blown away and pleased when we picked the best OG in the Draft with pick #36. I think he will be a serious building block for a more physical Oline in the middle, whether at LG, Center or RG.

Yeah the Whit effect was amazing on that left side. What a player he was.

That pipeline approach can work, too, problem is Snead and this staff just missed on too many picks. And getting Corbs ended up being a windfall, without that move we don't win that ring. Funny how many things need to come together for that to happen. But I think they needed to reevaluate what and how they're prioritizing with OGs and it seemed like they did.

Either way this pick of Avila is a welcome deviation. The Torrence interview had me hoping but I never really considered this type of thing would happen. He's gonna need adjustment time in the run game but I think of the two sides of that particular coin prioritizing pass pro makes a ton of sense for a lineman you're drafting in this offense. With McVay the best way to not be able to be on the field as an OL is not pass protecting well, so why not get a guy like Avila who is lights out in that regard.

I'm still buzzing from them adding to the trenches tbh. Feels good, even if we might come up a bit short overall this year.
