Good news. They must really think a lot of Lake since they hardly ever resign safeties. Then again Lake is definitely in the new mold of DB's. I like the combo of him and Wallace especially when we match up with a team like the 9ers. Lake, Wallace, and McCollough can be moved around the secondary.
I think that's really what sealed the deal on him getting signed. It's the fact that he's not just a safety but very versatile as a defender. Those are the type of guys that earn extensions and should. If you're a one trick pony, it's not worth it in my opinion unless you're elite in that area.

Huge fan of this re-signing. Not too long, and you're re-signing a heartbeat of our defense.

I'm assuming that means that McCreary is going to free agency; I don't think we have the ability to re-sign him along with Lake, unless he goes for a one-year "prove-it" deal.

Lol. You were never really a big Lake fan. Did his absence change your mind?
Yes. Without a doubt I see him differently now. Though long term I don't know that I want him in the slot. I'd like to see him in the pairing and the Rams load up some corners this offseason.

He doesn't really play the slot tho. He plays the star role that occasionally lines up at the slot position. He plays all 4 off ball positions depending on the alignment

And plays them well

I am aware. He's in the slot a lot though. And I think as this defense transitions to better corner quality maybe they can start using him a bit less in direct coverage in said slot.

Definitely agree that they need to load up on corners.

Someone earlier mentioned that much of his value is in his versatility, and that includes his ability to play in the slot.

His versatility is what allows Shula to disguise coverages. Almost all of the disguising went away without Lake back there.

Great to see the Rams extending their important players before FA starts. Who's next?

I am really happy for Lake! He seems like a nice young man. He certainly earned his contract. He is hugely important to this defence as his absence shows. He wore the green dot last year, which is likely why things look so much more disorganized in the secondary without him (even if he moves around a lot out there, and Landman has the green dot this year).

I like the term and money. Fair market value, and with the quantum of guaranteed money, we should have flexibility to move on in the shorter term if desired, which I think is important, as I am not as high on Lake as many are, and do think we can/should upgrade on him, just like at every position really, if the opportunity arises - we have two 1st rounders, I think we should go BPA, and a player like Caleb Downs could make Lake expendable when you think about cap allocation. I think Lake is good, perhaps very good, but not great, and until I saw how our depth behind him was not even close to replicating what he brings, did not view him as a must re-sign if the money wasn't friendly. But his versatility is elite, as is his fit in this defence, and his intelligence. I think the latter is what makes him the player he is. You can tell just by how he articulates and presents himself in interviews, Lake is a competent dude. Many NFLs are good at sports, but as soon as they open their mouth, clearly don't have much between the ears.

Happy to have him back. Even happier for the Lake family. Life-changing money!

EDIT - anyone watch his post-signing social media post? Take note of how he says he can't wait to be back for the PLAYOFFS. The Rams are injured now, but for the most part, look to be getting pretty healthy for when it matters.

This was huge. I have a feeling we will look to re-sign Durant, and possibly Curl. Every other FA, we really wouldn't even want to re-sign.

This like THIS, are why we now have the best organization in football.
I wonder what its going to take to sign Puka ?
As much as have liked other Rams WRs, Flipper, Ellard, Bruce , Holt ect Puka is different than all of them in very good ways.
GSOT was great and all, but all the deep ins and dives down, runs out of bounds was kind of a issue.
Not a problem with Puka, straight up gives his fucking all every time the ball comes his way. Its only year 3 and he has had too many toe taps, freakish catches to remember.
Its almost like he can force his will. None of those other guys had that. Simply clutch when it counts.

Sadly, think we have fallen too far to get Downs. Dude was a beast on the field last night too.

Agreed. He’d be worth a trade up for, and wouldn’t take as much as jumping into the top 5. I also think Kamari Ramsey is going to be a stud

I agree with your contract analysis. With $25.7 mil guaranteed it's likely effectively a 2 year deal. So if things go south, both sides can move on.

But I disagree that they would draft Downs if that made Lake expendable. McSnead has never signed a player to an extension and then immediately drafted their replacement. Now if they had a plan to play them all at the same time, then drafting Downs could happen.

Wasn't so sure this would happen before I saw this defense without him. :laugh3:
Right?
I kept thinking the Rams have had too much success drafting and developing Safeties to want to extend him with all of these big contracts around the corner.

…and then the defense began to suck.

Wise move to do before he hit the market.
