You have Kobie Turner taking most of those double teams. But look at Newton's sophomore year when he wasn't dealing with a foot injury. You saw some of the same shit AD did.

Is he going to be AD? Absolutely not, but I could see a few All-Pros in Newton's future.
I think you are definitely going in the right direction when you have multiple players on your DL that require double teams. You don’t have to beat the double all the time if you are giving other players beside you better opportunities.

I like Murphy, but there’s no way I take him if Verse is still on the board.
I'll take the high end interior pass rush over good outside pass rush personally. Also, Murphy is versatile in that he played nose in college also, over the much bigger Sweat.
I mean, I'm a bit agnostic here. Murphy might be the superior prospect. Verse will probably be a high secondary rusher. (Which I'd prob still take at 19 depending on who's avail).

What is interesting is that I'm fairly confident Latu will be there so if you love him great. I don't love him. He's okay. I'd be maybe sorta okay with taking him at 19.

Let's also remember, the last guy to be taken with a neck issue high was Van Der Esch. Who just retired after 5 seasons.

I can see Latu going in the 20s and also around pick 70 cause of that.
Pretty sure Vander Esch hurt his neck once in the NFL in his 2nd season. Could be mis-remembering however.

I haven't seen the tape of him splitting doubles much... you got... *scratches neck* any of that tape

Extremely disruptive against a top Penn State O-line - and that's playing with the foot injury.

Exactly. AD got triple-teamed a lot, and it gave guys like Fowler, Floyd, Miller, and Agent Zero and The Conductor a lot of opportunities. I truly feel Newton would do the same thing.

Not much in the way of double teams there, he did push a duo block at least that I saw. Can't really say what the foot injury was doing to him but if I was just going off this tape, I don't see a prospect worth the 19th spot. Not sure what you're seeing that convinces you otherwise.

From this tape along, I'd say top of 2nd to middle of 2nd. I'm sure there's other tape out there of him to watch. I'd want a guy who would demand and be able to push double teams more than what he shows here at 19. But again, not much in the way of doubles of him here.

Penn didn't seem to feel the need to do it.

Kobie's not good enough to eat doubles all the time.

I think there's definitely stuff to like about Newton, just think people are way overvaluing him and what he can do. All-pro seems a bit rich and wish-fullfilly.
Whoa! Whoa! Whoa!

Did you see the Next Gen Stats showing that Kobie was double teamed 71% of the time which was MORE than Donald last year?

From what I'm gathering, it seems the consensus is concluding that Murphy is the overall better talent. I'm seeing most now saying that he's a top 15 talent.

On Verse, do you see him as a stand up 3/4 edge or will he put his hand in the dirt?
Yeah, Verse seems to be falling. Saw a couple TV mock drafts on ESPN & NFLN, and Verse went as late as the late 20's in Fields Yates draft. Not sure if these guys hear things or not, but its interesting.

Mid 20s feels about right to me. I don't see special with him, nothing that screams top 10 or top 15 talent.

I stand corrected, that's impressive!

Makes me more interested in Newton. Still not worth the 19th pick though!

Also shows how absolutely abysmal our pass rush was from the edge when you include Donald in there.

Based on last years draft, if they follow it again, we’ll see lots of very high character guys with a passion for football (with little care for age, hype, stats, etc.).

Makes me wonder who the slam-dunk high character types are in that group of players they'll be looking at.

I mean, I think that's a great place to start, think part of the thinking last year was that we were gonna go so young on D that we needed guys who were already self-starters, football psychos. Our D will be less young but still quite young and they may decide to go that direction again but can see them take a chance or two maybe on guys who have more athletic upside but will need some hand holding.

Yeah you never know with this FO. They might decide to zig instead of zag this year. Unpredictable seems the case with them. But it is interesting that even going back several years, the best picks they’ve made are the ones that are not well known and overhyped guys - rather just solid, high character, football loving guys.

This time with trades...

Couple interesting things, both top corners gone by us. Denver goes Nix. (Talk about QB inflation!) I have to think Denver trades down as they have no 2nd round pick but far easier to mock trade ups than down.

I'm starting to hear in last two days guys liking Laitu and Verse less than I thought. All three top edge guys look like secondary rushers and wouldn't be stacked very high in other draft classes.

Draft class at DT is interesting, tons of gap shooters but few 2-gap-ers. Even though we play gap and a half, would be nice to get another space eater so Turner could slide over and yet... Turner did quite well in his spot which may make us okay with getting another gap shooting type DT.

Before Donald officially retired, I wouldn't have argued for a trade down but now I'm not sure, other than some of the corners avail, I love what's there for us at 19 and might rather get another swing at a defensive position of need later in the draft.

I think this could be a "sum is greater than their parts" kinda draft on defense for us.

I saw one of the talking heads had the Rams taking Nix at 19... I think if they did that, Snead would be escorted to the guillotine before the second round..

I only saw him play twice but Nix reminds me of Mayfield.

Penn has the best offensive line in the Big Ten. The fact that he could split blocks, especially with a foot injury, against that line means a lot. Means he's tough enough to play through obvious pain, means he's going to be better with another year removed from it.

I think Nix is a better leader than Mayfield ever was. He's got more talent too I'd say. Mariota would probably be a better comp even though they're not similar body types or anything.
