I don't completely disagree, but extending him will cause you to lose a few of your younger stars two years from now and you don't get extra picks in a trade. So you have less resources to build that roster.

And I should have said that this game shows you there is another way. Not saying we should jettison Stafford, but there is a path to still be successful without him when you have a coach and staff like we have. It also would help if you get a more mobile QB who can make a few plays with his legs. In this game Hurts made several huge 3rd down conversions with his legs.
I agree with the overall premise that there is another way.

But I question whether extending Stafford would cause us to not resign some young stars 2 years from now.

First, we shouldn't overestimate how many young players need to be resigned. They're not all "stars." Right now I have Nacua, Turner, and Verse who are obvious resigns.

Avila"s a maybe. I need to see what he does this year. Young is a no at this moment. In 2 years, Fiske will be up for early extension and that's a maybe too at this point.

In the meantime, a lot of big contracts - Stafford, Kupp, Hav, Jonah Jackson, etc. - would have fallen off the cap.

I think thy can pay Stafford for another 2 years and still retain their best young talent in the future.

Well I had to go back at it.

Orvlovsky was a Ram Sean Mcvays first season. He was with Jared Goff.
He got slammed yesterday because he voted for Josh Allen instead of Lamar Jackson.

Jalen Hurts will be out there this Sunday & sort of wanted him with Jared Goff in 2020.He was the next pick after Cam Akers.

I hear the Stafford to Pitt ?? Made me go back in time with all those Rams that went there Bettis,Green & love.

—Justin Fields at 25 years of age has some good NFL experience. My thinking is how good would he be with The Rams & Jimmy G under Mcvay ??? It’s a thought, but it sure would be interesting!!!

The price would be right & Kupp was rumored there,so maybe Stafford & Fields .Could buy time & give The Rams a different option, depending of downs ?
Don't ever mention the Rams and Fields name again !
Nope, nope and BIG NOPE !

Nothing wrong with bringing Fields in as a backup to see what he's got if McVay gets to work with him. We need a succession plan for Stafford soomer than later. Honestly at this rate we really shouldn't say no on anyone we bring in as a backup project as long as they don't break the bank. If the Rams decide to do that in the draft, thats ok too. Just happy that we'll have Stafford back soon.

I've wondered why Stafford (especially as he ages and seems less mobile) doesn't go all in on becoming more athletic, especially with his legs?

He wants more $, ok, but how 'bout working out 3/4 hours a day and becoming more of a "threat " with his legs? . . . at least able to scramble for 7/8 yards when forced out of the pocket and maybe even able to go for 10+ on a called bootleg? Now when he "runs" he seems like he's 45/50 years old.

They say Brady became a big workout guy and played well into his 40's? Why not Stafford?

Get more athletic and make the team better.
In the last few years, he's dropped weight to be more mobile.

not that the social media team has any inside info, but this would be a pretty wild tweet about next season if Stafford isn’t back. He’s the only one in the video lol

I don't think the NFL liked the Rams announcing the Stafford trade on Super Bowl Sunday.

They were probably told that if they get a new contract done with Stafford, that they should keep it quiet until Monday or Tuesday, this time. So this video was their subtle message to the fans.

But they didn't.

The trade was announced on Saturday, January 30th.

The Super Bowl was eight days later on Sunday, February 7th.
Its called an overpay. They went out and got Barkley because they knew Hurts needed a lot of help. Has the best RB, best OL, and best pair of WRs in the league.... Oh, and the number one defense.

Before this season, there were beat writers about when they can get out of his deal.

I think the social media team has to have stuff signed off on before posting so I would guess they would've had to had this DEFINITELY signed off on by people in the office. To me, it's a really good sign!

Sorry dude, I replied to the wrong post. That's what happens when you post while on a morning conference call regarding a job that you are trying to quit.

Thanks for clearing that up. That sounds dumb. They had to know he would play at least 2 more years unless the Rams won it all THIS year. I suppose Stafford might have considered retiring then with TWO rings…but who would care?
Yeah, I didn't like the sound of it either.

I posted this in the SB game thread, thought I would add it here since many may be avoiding that thread.

This game may show that when it matters, against a top team, an elite QB doesn't mean much if the roster has holes in it.

Makes you wonder if it provides a blue print to the Rams that if you can move Stafford, you might be better off in the long run with a loaded roster and a solid cheaper QB/ young QB who has enough ability to make a few plays for you... while your D dominates.
It proves that not even the so called best QB, even a mobile one, can overcome Oline with holes in it. I believe some people were suggesting Stafford was over the hill earlier this season when he looked almost as bad as Mahomes did in this SB.

It also proves you can afford to pay your QB and still build a very strong team, one that includes good LBs. Who knew.
