If Rodgers isn't playing next year, Stafford has a good chance to get into the top 5 or 6 in career catagories.

Needs 1759 yards to become #5 all time
Needs 135 completions to become #5 all time
Needs 3 TDs to become #6 all time
Needs 3 4th Q comebacks for #3, 5 for #2 and 8 for #1

But more importantly, with a SB win, he will join an esteemed crowd of QBs with multiple SB wins (12 as of today). Of those 12, 7 are Hall of Famers (Bradshaw, Montana, Aikman, Staubach, Peyton Manning, Bart Starr and Bob Griese). 2 more are certain HOFers (Brady, Mahomes). And I'd argue the other 3 should be in the HOF (Eli Manning, Jim Plunkett and Ben Roethlisberger). But circle back to one who is in. Bob Griese. He is remembered for winning 2 Super Bowls but probably more famous for being part of that 72 Dolphins undefeated team. I have a problem with both of those things.

1. In the 2 Super Bowls, he was 8 of 11 for 88 yards passing and 6 of 7 for 73 yards. His SB total is 14 of 18 for 161 yards 1 TD 1 Int.
2. In that undefeated Super Bowl season, he started 5 games (5-0) while Earl Morrall started 9 (9-0).

I gotta say, nothing against Bob Griese but if he got into the Hall of Fame, those 3 (Eli, Plunkett and Roethlisberger) should all be there. And if Stafford wins another SB, he should be a first ballot lock. Hell, if Stafford didn't win another but won MVP, he's more impressive than Bob Griese, who never won an MVP (Super Bowl or regular season), despite winning 2 Super Bowls by throwing 18 passes (1 to the other team) and handing the ball off 90 fucking times.

Agree with everything you said. It was just a different era and the NFL was really just beginning to capture the country.

A couple of questions......

MVP or not?

Drew Brees (1 SB win; 0 NFL MVP; 1 SB MVP, 1 CPOY, 2 OPOY)
Ben Roethlisberger (2 SB win; 1 SB loss; 0 NFL MVP; 0 SB MVP, OROY)
Matt Ryan (1 SB loss; 1 NFL MVP, 1 OPOY, 1 OROY, )
Eli Manning (2 SB wins; 0 NFL MVP; 2 SB MVP)
Doug Williams (1 SB win; 0 NFL MVP; 1 SB MVP)

HOF QBs with 1 SB win, 1 SB appearance, O MVP? Got any?

I'm confused. It happens.

What do the 5 QBs you listed have in common?

All played in a SB
All received various honors (I edited and listed those)
All were considered excellent QBs
I really could not figure that out.

2 won two Super Bowls ... 2 won one Super Bowl ... Ryan did not win one.

Not all were MVPs ... Not all will be Hall of Famers.

Some of us need a little help.

How about the other question? Got any?
"HOF QBs with 1 SB win, 1 SB appearance, O MVP?"

Joe Namath?

AP, UPI and The Sporting News all awarded Broadway Joe their AFL POY honor in 1968.

Brees and Roethlisberger will both get in, its ridiculous that Manning hasnt. I dont have an opinion on Ryan either way, and Williams isnt HOF material

Quite right. I only ask this because the talking heads and a lot of fans believe Stafford needs another SB appearance to eventually get there. Something I disagree with. I believe with the SB win in 2021 and an MVP in 2025 (should he win), it will be enough.

There is Namath; 1 SB win 0 MVP

The is one QB who didn't win a SB but had 1 SB app and 1 MVP.
Marino

There are some who never made it to the SB, never won an MVP
Fouts and Moon....and neither of them rank as high as #9 in most catagories.

Some of the HOFers who played in an earlier era and either didn't win a SB OR an MVP or both....
*Tarkenton (3 SB losses; MVP in 75)
Jurgensen (didn't play in the SB with Washington in 72, never won an MVP)
*Kelly (4 SB losses; 0 MVPs)

*Certainly, making it to multiple Superbowls should be enough to get in, particularly if they've won an MVP. And that is my argument for Stafford. He did win one (like Namath) and if he wins an MVP it should punch his ticket. I think if he continues to play for the Rams, there's a good chance he wins a second SB anyway.

I agree. Ryan is an interesting one because he didn't win a SB.....got to one....won an MVP and is top 10 all time in yards, TDs, attempts and completions. That's gotta count for something, no?

And if you're right Brees and Roethlisberger will get in....and Eli should be in.....then Stafford should be a lock too.

I lost my fascination with HOF over the years because in many cases its the Hall of very Good and in others its a political contest. That being said Stafford should be HOF, arguably 1st ballot, even if he never throws another pass

I don't have a fascination with the HOF but I believe the parameters can be too strict sometimes. It's not the "Hall of Statistics" or the "Hall of Accomplishments". It's the Hall of FAME with fame being the operative word. There can be players of fame who don't have the "statistics" or "accomplishments" most believe are necessary. I think that's the reason Namath is there. The biggest game in history. The first to 4,000 yards. But other than that, what did he do? Shave cream commercials?

He's #72 in career passing yards
#74 in TDs
He won an AFL MVP but not an NFL MVP.
But damn, he did win the most important game in the history of the NFL.

And I have no problem with him being in the HOF because of what he contributed to the game.

It's also why I think Jim Plunkett belongs in the HOF. Drafted by a shitty Patriots team. He started every game his first 4 years with no good results, until Grogan took over in 1975. He spent a couple years in SF and then on to Oakland. Once the Snake was traded to New Orleans for the 1980 season, Plunkett took off. 34-12 from age 33 to 37, 2 Super Bowl Championships beating Vermeil's Eagles and the vaunted defending Champions Washington Redskins in 83. Why he's still not in the HOF is beyond me. He's got 9 less TDs than Namath and 1800 less yards!

The NFL needs to recognize that today's media are not the measured and mature voters they had for so many years prior. And implement a new system that removes them from the equation so they can clean up the process and set strict guidelines for whatever board they create for the new process.

I'd even consider using an AI filter system to provide the list of candidates. And I'd also start chipping away at the positions that are backlogged, like WR.

Of course the NFL is like the fat pig who doesn't realize he's about to be slaughtered on these things. They would do well to trim the fat and get back to a leaner process that reps the league correctly.
