Who are the return candidates besides Smith? I could see them going light at WR.
Schraeder, Mario Williams and we signed the guy from Philly who we haven't seen which doesn't bode well for the bottom of the roster WR's in Brittain and Hunter has returned some and has the speed. Another thing in Hunter's favor is McVay used Corum early before he got hurt last year and Corum was the #2 RB.

Guys who could be cut that may be at risk of being poached if we try to sneak them onto the practice squad:

QB Bennett
RB Schrader
WR X Smith, Presley, Williams
TE Allen
OL Leveston, WLampkin (assuming healthy), McMahon, McClendon, Dedich

DL Murchison, D Johnson, B Norton
LB Dolac
CB Wallace, CLampkin, Woods
S Valcarcel

No judgement or preferences here; just thinking that these are the 'bubble' guys I think we could potentially lose if we tried to pass them through waivers to sneak them onto the practice squad.

Do I think we would lose them all? Of course not. But COULD they lose some of these guys? I think so.

I'd be sure to keep:
Bennett
Schrader (Rivers PS)
Allen
Dolac
Wallace

Not sure on OL, but leaning Quessenbery, Lampkin (if OK) & Leveston.
One of March/Desjuan.
Hoping for Valcarcel, CBLampkin, Presley for PS.

You can feel the roster improvement by looking at the cuts, that's for damn sure. It's going to be tough. Here's what I'm thinking now for the offense:

QB (3) Stafford, Garoppolo, Bennett.
RB (4) Williams, Shrader, Corum, Hunter.
TE (4) Higbee, Parkinson, Allen, Ferguson*.
OL (8) Jackson, Avila, Shelton, Dotson, Havenstein, Limmer, McClendon, Quessenberry. <Lampkin IR>
WR(5) Nacua, Adams, Atwell, Whittington, Smith.

*= Ferguson to IR potentially, which would open up a roster spot for Mumpfield. Don't like cutting Mumpfield but ST has to be prioritized.

Now there's a chance the Rams don't have Shrader as high as I do in that room, and his cut would enable Mumpfield having a roster spot. But if they cut him he is at risk to be added to another team. Also Shrader fits well in the offense with his pass catching ability if we have Jimmy at QB early on, where he will need dumpoff targets who can RAC.

I don’t see the need to keep a 4th RB. It’s not like we’re saving that guy for the future. Unlike a potential OL, LB, DL that’s being groomed to be a future starter.

If Schader gets picked up off the PS, big whoop - get some other RB that’s are available all around for the PS. Heck, We’ve even got Whitt who can play RB in an emergency.

If they put Stafford on IR they will have that extra slot to preclude that tough decision. Also Schrader would be available as an option for Jimmy in the offense.

When Stafford returns maybe Schrader and his pass catching ability isn't as crucial. But by then we may have a different take on who should be cut.

When it comes to RBs, are we to assume Rivers is out of the conversation? He’s a ST stalwart. Schrader might not last on the PS, but just how many snaps would he be getting if he was the #4 to KW, Corum, and Hunter?

ST needs will have a say in the 53.

Also Shrader fits well in the offense with his pass catching ability if we have Jimmy at QB early on, where he will need dumpoff targets who can RAC.

Gotta imagine we go 25/25 with offense and defense. I could see Leveston making the team as the swing guard/right tackle with D.J. Humphries as the backup at left (you kinda forgot him, but that's okay; I think everyone has). That could theoretically leave a spot for Mumpfield, even if Ferguson doesn't go on IR.

But here's my thoughts on the roster crunch:

QB (3) - Stafford*, Garoppolo, Bennett

RB (4) - Williams, Corum, Hunter, Schrader

WR (6) - Nacua, Adams, Atwell, Whittington, Smith, Mumpfield

TE (3) - Higbee, Allen, Ferguson*

OL (9) - A. Jackson, Avila, Shelton, Dotson, Havenstein, Humphries, Limmer, McClendon, Leveston. (Lampkin IR)

(All depending on Stafford's health, of course. Would roll with three if he's not ready to go with another team's cut. If Ferguson needs IR, well, there's plenty of talented tight ends on other rosters to poach. I've just seen enough of Parkinson; I'd love to see a seventh-round pick swap for him, for all I care.)

As for defense, that's tricky. I'd rather keep six DL; Desjuan Johnson has played himself into a roster spot. Wallace at safety/corner/backup STAR gives us a lot of options. Here's how I'd do it defensively:

DL (6) - Turner, Fiske, Ford, Davis, Johnson, Hamilton.

EDGE LB (6) - Verse, Young, Stewart, B. Jackson, Hampton, Thomas

ILB (4) - Landman, Speights, Paul, Dolac

CB (4) - Witherspoon, Forbes, Durant, D. Williams

SAF (5) - Lake, Curl, Kinchens, McCollough, Wallace

(Yeah, see ya, Kendrick, Reeder. Well...I guess Reeder can stay on the practice squad. Kendrick, please go far, far away.)

My hope is they do away with the gameday inactives but there are issues with that.
I would be in favor of that. Either way, with the wear and tear on bodies, they should allow for more bodies on a roster to help spread it around and keep players fresher through long seasons.

Dammit, can't they just raise the roster size to 60 already??

Seriously, the union should make something like that conditional in exchange for going to 18 games as the league want to do.
I believe they will be doing just that if the go to 18 games. Pretty sure I read that some where

If it's just 12

RB Williams, Corum and Hunter (Shraeder to the PS)
TE Higbee, Ferguson and Parkinson (try to get Allen to the PS)
WR Adams, Nacua, Atwell, Mumpfield, Whittington and Smith (Smith could be odd man out if they have somebody they love for returns).
12, is a tough number.
I don’t think Allen, Mumpfield or Smith would make it through to the PS
I think Allen may have the toughest path with teams like Miami etc needing TE help
