Maybe McVay thinking three moves ahead. Scheelhaase As OC gets hired away after next year. Rams get 2 R3 picks and Kingsbury takes over as OC the following year. I need to look it up, but I thought Kingsbury was considered a respected offensive minded coach. Just didn’t have the ammo or the broad mindedness to be a head coach, especially for a weak organization like Arizona.

I said this before, I think this is a great move... for Kliff.

His offense (shotgun, spread, tempo, space, little motion) is so different from ours and he'll get time under his belt to dive into an under center scheme, with both drop back and play-action elements - and often condensed. It could really grow him as an OC and possibly eventual HC again.

I think we'll also be able to pick his brain on some stuff like his tempo and spread work. I think it's a good move and good mind to have on the staff.

I can't imagine he's our OC or will be in our future given how different the offenses are but will be interesting to see what happens.

Edit: I'm particularly intrigued by what he can offer us in stretching our no huddle offense.

Well there's somebody that should remind McVay to run the football.
That’s funny and I get the perception Fact is though, his ‘21 Cardinals team (which was a decent team) finished with 496 rushing attempts vs 570 pass targets.

Our Rams just had 465 rush vs 581 pass targets. I think many of us would like more rush/pass balance here.

Kingsbury did (try)running the ball with David Johnson and Chase Edmonds. Murray’s scrambling did, of course contribute to those rush totals.

QBs Kyler Murray and Colt McCoy had 110 of those rushes.

And that iteration of Jimmy Lake with the Rams was simply "assistant head coach". He had no position group and wasn't a coordinator. And two years later with the Rams this time? Senior defensive assistant.

Apologies if the conversation wasn't clear enough I was referring primarily to has a person ever been hired with no job title specified and ended up an OC or a DC? Gonna go out on a limb and say it hasn't happened. Any guesses what Kingsbury will garner for a title? Thinking something along the lines of Assistant Coach, Offensive AC or maybe something a bit more specific like Pass game advisor/assistant/coordinator.

If he was hired to be an OC it would have been announced but since we know that wasn't the case he'll have some impressive title that means nothing and tells us he's a sounding board for McVay and somebody he can take ideas from. Another thing that has been speculated is he'll coach up a rookie QB. He won't have to groom a rookie starter but one thing Kingsbury has successfully done is coach rookie QB's since he's had 2 rookie QB win ROY.

Kliff wants another HV gig and knows the surest way to get it attaching yourself to McVay.

Good decision by him and McVay for adding him to the coaching roster in any capacity.
Or he could become a life long coordinator like Josh McDaniels and Spags. He's good friends with McVay and may enjoy the LA lifestyle and models without the pressure of being an OC.

The rest of the NFL have officially been put on notice !!

I think it will be set up as a senior advisor role to Scheelhaase. Kind of like a mentor role while reporting directly to McVay. That's why they could give him a title of Assistant HC position/Passing Game Coordinator.
Probably about right. And not a bad solution to ensure Scheelhaase gets the OC gig and has a strong chance to net us a 3rd round pick.

Just surprised me he got Kliff in here without giving him the OC role. But having Kliff in the group with access to McVay for cooking up new route combos and plays, maybe doing some quality control looking at McVay's trends on calls for down/distance, etc, etc should make for a very strong offensive gameplan week to week.

Really pumped about this addition.

This is a good point. Kliff will undoubtedly learn a lot in terms of standard NFL practices on shit, which will benefit him. McVay did offer him that type of deal in the beginning, before he got hired by AZ.

But this will help the Rams too. You can't have enough creative minds.

This might also be the prelude to the Rams losing another coach as well.

LaFleur still needs to add coaches to his staff.

To get compensation for a minority coach being promoted to a head coach, they must be in their role with current team for two years. Just want people to be aware of that as I have seen a few posts about getting those picks if Scheelhaase is indeed hired as OC and then becomes a head coach.

He’s been here 2+ years. I’m not sure what your point is. The rule isn’t two years in a specific title/role. It’s two years with the team.

I suppose that is because my brain doesn’t work all the time. I was likely thinking that it’s rare to hire head coaches who were not in their role of OC or DC. I see said the blind man.

I know. Read the last sentence in my post.

I watched those games cuz…they’re on tv here every week. His teams were no more pass happy than McVay’s teams these last few years. David Johnson was a workhorse. Same with J. Connor.

I did. I was just pointing out how many rushes came from the QBs that year.

Either way, my point remains as I question if he's the guy to remind McVay to run the football if he's as pass happy as McVay..

Great, now go get Jim Swartz for a similar position on defense
Shula would probably be pissed. But not the worst idea. They could hire him on the offensive side as quality control for the offense and have him give you his gameplan every week as if he was coaching the defense we're up against. And then if Shula has questions, he's around.
