If the Rams didn’t want to pay the $$ to keep him after the ‘22 season, why would they want to pay him all that $$ to have him now?

Nobody believes ramsey was traded for Hunter Long, do they? Clearly it was a salary dump from a player whose ability was headed towards its biggest challenge—30 years old.

Unless he is released, this isn’t really a discussion, is it?
Miami isnt going to release him. There are teams interested, its likely Miami weighing option of paying out additional salary vs quality of pick/trade value.
Also, the Rams got Hunter Long and a 3rd round pick. Rams didnt want to trade him, they just couldnt justify the cap hit for a team that was looking like a complete rebuild was in order after the 5-12 season

Did the Rams not want to pay him or were the Rams too tight against the cap?

I believe it was the latter. McVay once said if they hadn’t signed a few free agents (that didn’t pan out) they could have kept Ramsey.
That sounds like he would have liked to keep him.
Exactly. They had just gone 5-12 and looked like a total rebuild was in order.

Yes. That is what McVay SAID.

They had a ton of injuries and it wasn’t a total rebuild.
'22 was a disaster and the Rams went in to '23 seemingly preparing for a set back. They were shedding salary left and right. Allegedly trying to reset the cap because it was expected to see a big salary cap increase in 24. Surprisingly cut Wagner, let go of Leonard Floyd, let Gay walk as they did with Gaines, Rapp and A'Shawn. Ramsey was part of that salary re-set. Didnt even entertain trying to keep Mayfield. But sure enough the Rams outperformed all expectations after a slow start, McVay got his mojo back

Why keep Mayfield? They had Stafford. They also had Kupp, and AD. Since they knew they weren’t going to contend for a Super Bowl and just dealt with a slew of injuries, it didn’t make sense to keep vets like Wagner. They needed to get younger and healthier.

I would call it more of a reset and not a total rebuild.

Rebuild, reset, tomato, tomahto
Point was, they were cutting down the cap and had to let Ramsey go as part of that initiative. They didnt want to get rid of him.
Then Puka and Kyren both happened

Oh, I thought you were saying they wanted to get rid of him.

I agree, it was a cap move to get ready for the next wave. I also wonder if they felt that by the time they could contend again, would Ramsey still be a top Corner. That’s a position that players can really nosedive on at a relatively young age.

Unfortunately by giving him that contract, Miami screwed any chance of him being a more affordable player even if he declines.

Not at all, I've been in total agreement with you on this. McVay is always class when talking about former players but Ramsey is the one guy I feel he really didnt want to let go
It's one thing for a coach to say complimentary comments about former players. Ramsey is on record gushing over his time with the Rams and his relationship with McVay.

I'm in the camp for trading for him. I say a 4th and an unused TE!

We don't have a fourth next year. I would imagine it would be something like a fifth each of the next two years (which could go up as high as a 3rd if Miami picked up a significant part of the salary).

Just speculating.

This all strikes me as the OBJ talk. McVay said he’d love to have OBJ back but in the end, we didn’t do it and there’s really no indication they were even trying to make it happen. There was a lot of smoke then. There may be a little more with Ramsey. But here it is 3 days after the June 1st date and nothing. I’m guessing it doesn’t happen and probably hasn’t even really been in the works.

Part of me hopes we do it but at the same time, I don’t think it’s a ground breaking move - so….
