I still marvel that Rams were able to acquire Stafford…

So basically we gave 4 firsts a second and a third for Stafford.

But again please do not argue any of my points, this is just to let you know how I felt at the time of the trade. It was just my opinion. I do not want to start another Goff argument.
Well... That's really not how a discussion board works.

The Whiner brass can fantasize all they want. They weren't getting 2 firsts and they didn't get offered 2 seconds either.

I would be absolutely shocked if any team felt Goff was worth 2 firsts and a second. And I liked Goff while seeing his growing limitations. Many in football thought he'd be traded for nothing more than cap relief or we'd be forced to hold onto him. The Stafford trade was a shocker to most.

The idea then that we traded 4 firsts + is a real head scratcher at best. As Rams fans, I think we valued Goff far more than any outsiders and worked to overlook his short comings. I was constantly talking him up even through his last season when I saw a very troubling trend.

I too thought we may have given up too much for Staff but definitely saw it as an upgrade. You take it to quite the extreme with this 4 firsts, a 2nd, and a 3rd stuff. Hell... We wouldn't have even been able to do this trade without that $25m per that we essentially got back in the trade.

Well the thing is - you are not including the value of Goff in this trade.

You may say giving up Goff for his salary is a wash but Detroit only paid him his salary for those 3 seasons - 25M per year for 3 years

So basically you are trading Goff for nothing as long as you don't have to incur his additional cap hit for 3 seasons at 25M per

I on the other hand value Goff at a much higher value than you.

I really don't want to get into a discussion of Goff's value with you. I am just letting you see where I am coming from initially from the trade stand point.

If I was a fan of a team without a QB, I could see us giving up 2 firsts and a second for Goff alone. Maybe I am crazy but that is the value I saw of Goff at the time of the trade. I believe San Francisco said they could have gotten 2 firsts or so for a healthy Crapola and I think Goff is much better than Crapola.

So basically we gave 4 firsts a second and a third for Stafford. This is my opinion only. Laugh at it as you will but it is just my opinion. Let's not argue on that please.

So at the time of the trade, I felt that was too high for Stafford. Well we won a Superbowl so it is all good now.

Just a friendly reminder - once I reviewed Stafford's play at Detroit, I did state Stafford was a better QB than Goff.

But again please do not argue any of my points, this is just to let you know how I felt at the time of the trade. It was just my opinion. I do not want to start another Goff argument.

I'm sorry... but it's tough to say... "this is how I value the trade but I don't wanna talk about how I value the trade."

No one was giving you that much for Goff. No one.
Look at what Washington gave up for Wentz this offseason and that's the ceiling for what you'd get for Goff, at this point.

And.. the 9ers can't get a second rounder for Jimmy G right now.

Goff way better than Wentz - but again my opinion

And maybe I was dreaming but I have seen people on this very board overstate players value.

I overstated Goffs value at the time of the trade - I will admit that.

But I want to stress that at the time of the trade, that's how much I felt Goff was worth and I was ticked "at the time" that Snead and McVay downplayed Goffs play in the GB game.

This is a looking back thread and just responding to the OP to how amazed he was that people felt we overpaid for Stafford.

That is my reasoning for why I felt we overpaid "at the time" of the trade.

But it's all good now.

Goff was a salary dump in addition to a QB change.

Not really

I believe if we kept Goff instead of Stafford - our CAP hit would have been about the same as it was getting rid of Goff and getting Stafford

But Stafford was a big upgrade over Goff so that's all that matters when it comes to the CAP

Which I think is what @Merlin is saying. You can't have a change in QB (Stafford) without dumping Goff's salary.

Sure.
I was definitely on board with the trade and the price for it. I expected the first round picks to be low.. and at least one of them is as low as you could get. That's got to be part of the math when you're talking about trading draft picks.

As to Goff being "way better" than Wentz.. I mean, sure.. that's an opinion.. but it's with no quantifiable evidence backing it up.
Neither is a reliable QB, nor one that can be counted on to really make a difference.

Not a Goff hater.. just pointing out what he is.

Rams paid him starter money at that moment in time. Then he regressed and they realized they made a mistake. Then they dumped the salary and him while also finding an elite QB.

One of the single most amazing moves I've seen any leadership team make in many years, as a turnaround/decision/move by Snead/McVay.

Ballsy move that, literally, changed the league.

Look at how people are doing business this offseason.

But yeah... Stafford was the key that unlocked the door to the championship.
Yeah and it’s not really even close. Folks can debate the SB MVP choice all day because it’s debatable, but Stafford elevated the offense and the other guy held it back. The Rams knew it and did what was necessary. I love this team.

Here's my opinion on the Goff/Stafford trade... Snead and McVay really lucked out. They were definitely disappointed in Goff, but how often does a great QB become available to trade, and if it weren't for the fact that a Rams had a great relationship with the brand-new Lions GM... that trade would never have happened. The Lions probably could have gotten a better deal elsewhere, but they also wanted to do the right thing for Stafford. And once that "chance meeting" (yeah right) happened in Mexico, it was over. Everything just fell in place for the Rams.

I dislike Wentz as a QB and Indianapolis feels the same way after last year. That's my basis.

I want to see how Goff does this year with a better roster. Last year does not count at all with that roster.

I think that was one of the worst rosters I have ever seen on a team. It was really bad.

I give credit to the coaches for winning 3 games and almost winning 4 other games.

I don’t like Wentz either.
But his value last year, before the COVID stuff.. he was traded for what turned out to be a first and a 3rd.
Maybe you’d have gotten that for Goff? But I don’t believe they could. Wentz still has the ability to extend a play in a way Goff never could. But Wentz is also a weirdo, sounds like.

Goff is much more accurate than Wentz so maybe he would have gotten a 1st and 3rd as well.

I agree that the Lions should be improved. I probably should have stated that the lions had some talented players with no experience. As a result, a terrible team.

Look at Baltimore Orioles. They have a lot of talented young players but they are still horrible this year.

And I would go on to say that if Indianapolis had Goff, they would have made the playoffs and gone on to win a game or two in the playoffs. That team was made for Goff's strengths and also can hide Goff's weaknesses.

The most amazing thing about the whole trade was that Matt and mcvay were in Cabo at the same fucking time. I still question the coincidence but the fact that the rams might have lost out to the niners had Stan not made the decision on the tarmac is a huge part of this epic story.

I said here on the day of the trade that anyone concerned about the trade would be jumping with joy come February and I'm saying it again. I have alot of lettuce on the repeat

For the record I was including Goff in that equation.

I don't believe any team would trade the 9th pick for:

Goff plus the contract
Pick 32
3rd rounder
Late first next year

I believe most teams turn that down. Just what I believe.
