If you think Woods is in OBJ's class then I can't help you. Let's agree to disagree. :thumbsup1:
2 totally different dogs competing at the same WR position. At this point OBJ is a junkyard dog (superior at high pointing the ball and making strong-hands catches). Woods is a show dog (better route runner, YAC).

Some skills are more rare than others. We aren't gonna find a guy like Odell without a high pick.

It doesnt avoid guaranteed money. Taysom Hill is already under contract, it's a totally different animal. Odell will get some 40-60 mill guaranteed. This is apples to oranges
i literally said in my last comment that my original comment had nothing to do with odell specifically. the voidable years gives you cap flexibility, idk why youre insistant on bringing up odell and guaranteed money. but either way, yes voidable years would still effect guaranteed money cuz added years still allows you to further spread out the money in how it counts against the cap

Why do I bring up Odell? Umm.... Seriously? You do realize that this thread is about how we can keep him? It's kind of the title and everything..
So ok, I agree, voidable years is a way for teams to re-structure guys to make cap space. Great, now back on topic, how can they sign Odell?

One thing we have going for us is this is truly the happiest I’ve seen him be after his second year. He’s having fun and feel appreciated, which I think is something he’s been missing
He could be a new man, more mature and happy to be here now, but things change and old habits die hard. We should only keep him if he takes a similar deal to Woods and Kupp. No 20 mil plus deal. He could be just on his good behaver till he is not.

I'm sure the Rams will do everything to keep, OBJ, Von Miller and Sony Michel.

SJD is the most likely cap casualty and will probably net us a 5th.

The biggest off-season question is gonna be Big Whit/Noteboom as I'm unsure we can keep both unless Big Whit takes a big pay cut and we sign Noteboom to a longer deal with money pushed into future years to keep the 2022 cap under control.

But for real, I think the entire org is dreaming about next year with Kupp, OBJ and Woods with Akers and Michel in the back field. That'd be ridiculous.
I think Michel is gone next year. The draft is full of guys like him. I like him and all, but get a guy on a rookie contract.

Nice thread.

I remember here at ROD talks before the season that the Rams would have to lose Kupp or Woods in 2022. I wanted to keep both.

Now, it's how can the Rams keep Kupp, Woods, and OBJ. It would be great if they could. As it is the Rams are top-heavy with big cap hits at the top of the roster. That's will out Von Miller and others that will be free agents. It also hurt depth as we have seen.

I don't see how trading Woods saves any significant money but, maybe someone can figure it out. I'm not sure if the roster bonus can be taken on by another team.

It's really hard to figure out until we see some other pieces fall into place such as Staffords contract and the new cap amount. I would doubt they could keep all three. It is fun to think about it.
Any paid money cannot be transferred to another money. The savings would be in 2023 and after.

Now, OBJ could have most of his 2022 money be a signing bonus which could be spread out, if the Rams dared.

As for OBJ contracts... his ability to supplement with endorsements in LA is massive, especially after we win the Super Bowl.

I think people underestimate how much players who are here want to stay here. Yes, guys leave, but usually it's because it's time to move on, not because they don't want to stay.

If we want them, we FIND a way for them to stay.

I mean, we lose a few... Brockers and JJ, but that's the exception.
There is some truth the endorsement opportunities. Guys like JJ and Hill don't have the name power of guys like OBJ, Ramsey, Donald, etc. Their opportunities would the lower level local type. They rely on that contract for the bulk of their money. OBJ has to factor in what he could get in that market.

But then again some of these guys have an ego and want to be among the best paid. To some that contract is a validation of their level. Depends on what he wants most. A chance at a ring with a quality team. Or the money. Hopefully that time in Cleveland opened his eyes. Get with the wrong team and your career could be ruined.

I think Michel's gone as well, but I don't think what he brings is something you can count on from a mid-low round rookie and I don't know that they'd try.
It's such a crapshoot.. next year they'll bring back Akers, Henderson and Funk.. all who missed big chunks of time with injury.
I can see them taking one in the 6th or 7th though.

Rams have trouble getting that type of runner in mid-low rounds, but other teams do not. They need to look more to size and speed and start from there. Doesn't have to be to shifty. Also maybe someone who hasn't had multiple knee injuries.

I think it will be pretty surprising after next year to see the moves they have made. After whit retires or leaves, and maybe some restructures or extensions (Stafford probably). They will maybe have 30 mil to spend at most. They will need a LT.. Noteboom is also a free agent. Then there's von Miller, Darius Williams, OBJ and Sony. There are also quite a few other potential guys to keep, Brian allen, Shelton, Mundt, etc. I'm guessing they can afford to keep von and maybe 1 of the other bigger names.

I don’t know.. as a complimentary back, wasn’t Brown that guy?

Either way, I don’t see them spending higher than that.

Maybe they look for a cheap vet.

How many years ago was that. Wasn't that under Fisher. Anyway, I think they can replace Michel and forgo the few mil he would insist on.

I think having talent in the offensive backfield needs to be an organizational priority. If for example they let Michel walk this offseason and stay pat with Akers > Hendy > Funk > Howell we'll be back in the same situation we were this year where we depend on Hendy at some point. And I don't think Hendy is good enough for a team that wants to win championships. If you rely on him for a span of games there's a good chance you'll be down to RB3 or 4.

So it would be nice if they could get Michel back on a deal they like. And failing that, I would hope they draft a RB.

Yea Michel was a necessity after Akers went down. We wouldn't be here without him no doubt. But Akers was slated to be the workhorse in the off-season. And he definitely was down the stretch and into the playoffs last year. So I bet we let Michel walk, and draft someone late. If Akers stays healthy next year we wont even be thinking about who our #2 RB is let alone #3. I predict Akers to have a 2017 type Gurley year next year. He's going to explode.

As long as Michel isn't holding out for something ridiculous, we should make the effort to get him back under contract. Henderson will become a 2023 free agent and could easily be allowed to walk, so having a 1 -2 punch like Akers/Michel guaranteed for a few years sets us up nicely for future success.
jmo.

Now just us your boy Ben Mason so we can get a real TE2/FB
I agree on the post. Henderson salary isnt guaranteed, he can walk. So if Michel can be signed for a reasonable #, I'd love it. Save the 1 mill and the 1 mill they'd pay a rook, and get Michel 5-6 mill.

I'd personally trade Henderson for a pick and draft a speedy running back in the draft next year. We lack picks right now, and recouping them with Henderson and maybe even Woods would help tremendously.

Not a bad thought in terms of Henderson. Might have a few guys that could get you a 5th or 6th rounder. Hopkins? Maybe Robinson, which also frees cap space.

At least it gets you a pick that can be used the move up with another pick.
