I don't get the hate either.
Whether we did the right thing in trading him away for Stafford is beyond debate now - even those who were most opposed to the trade agree with that now.
Goff is a very good - not great - quarterback who can really pick apart a D when he's on his game, and he is on it more often than not. We saw it happen many times here and it's happened many times in his new digs.
During his tenure with the Rams, he only had one year where he was under .500 as a starter, and that was under Fisher and the Prevent Offense, and just about any QB would have sucked in that environment. He's only under .500 as a starter for one season with the Lions, and that was his first year there when they had absolutely nothing on the roster. Goff is also above .500 in the playoffs - 5-4 - if you count the game in Seattle which he technically didn't start but played almost the entirety of. He clearly shit the bed this year in the playoffs, but last year he played very good ball in all 3 of his playoff starts - and if Josh Reynolds hangs onto two perfectly thrown balls, the Lions probably get to the Super Bowl.
In short, a bad or even just mediocre QB doesn't build a resume like that.
People in football circles, including many on this board, absolutely fucking slobber over Justin Herbert, rating him far above Goff, but what has Herbert ever done? He has two playoff appearances and was bad in one and gawd-awful in the other. At some point, your record is what it is.
I think a lot of people single him out for the loss in the SB, but I don't think that's a fair assessment when our own head coach - by his own admission - got absolutely schooled that day. Not sure even Stafford would have overcome that, as we haven't won many games with him either when McVay was having a really off day.
I'm very happy the Rams have Stafford, and although initially opposed, I'm very happy that they made the trade. Stafford has pretty much been everything his proponents said he would be. But looking ahead to the not-too-distant future, Stafford is going to retire and we are still going to need someone to take snaps. The likelihood we can find someone like him again is less than the likelihood that we can find someone of Goff's talent level. Guys like #9 don't just grow on trees, and we were damn lucky he became available right at the time McVay lost his patience with Goff. And while McVay had legitimate gripes with Goff at the time, it was a two-way street (cough offensive line cough), so I hope McVay learned a thing or two and gets his next QB the support he needs - especially in the very likely scenario that the next guy is not someone of Stafford's calibre.
