Why is that in blue font? I have no issue with you, and frankly enjoy your takes.
Two reasons ... the first one is obvious. Because I used the silly term "BFF".

The second reason is that @Loyal gets easily jealous. He considers us BFFs, and I don't want to break-his-heart.

Also enjoy your takes.

I think the Rams are in position to do the right thing regardless. If the price makes sense, prioritize him. If someone blows us out of the water, find an impact player for the price you wanted Dotson. If we left free agency with an edge, corner, and WR3, then I'd have no problem with them drafting a guard first.

Like the post. Like the optimism. Love the thought that if one thing doesn't work, pivot and spend the $ elsewhere.

However, you knew that was coming didn't you, I can't help but think that after Von Miller passed on re-signing with the Rams, their pivot move was a huge offer to Allen Robinson.

But have Zero awareness or appreciation of the salary cap. Got it!
That's not my job. It's Snead and demoff job to figure that part out. All I know is we got a top 5 player at their position on the oline who's relatively young. You figure out how to keep those players, especially if the entire offense revolves around the oline.

Is there a bigger gamble in the NFL than paying a guy top dollar for one year of production? I'd like to keep him as much as the next but this just screams caution to me.

So we agree on all points.

We both really want Kevin Dotson back with the Rams.

I want it to be on a long-term deal, with a cap-friendly year-one salary cap hit.
You don't care if the Rams use-up more than 50% of their cap space with the Franchise Tag.

And finally, you have No Clue at all on how the salary cap works or how important it is to a team's strategy.

One bigger gamble: paying a guy top dollar for less than a year production (lol) - ie Dotson.

I get what you're saying.

My response would be he's had more than one productive year... and had one outstanding year.
He's graded out on PFF throughout his career at a higher grade than what Avila was graded this year.. and that was on a team that had him in the wrong spot.. and a team that is objectively bad at offense.

Dotson significantly outperformed both Steelers starting guards this year.
Seumalo had his worst pff grade in years on the Steelers after they signed him in FA.

I think there's something to be said for being put in the right position in the right offense.

That all being said.. I'm very wary of paying 17 mil a year for a guard.

Whoever we sign this year, we should keep the cap hit low in the first year or two.
We are still buried with the Stafford, Donald, and Kupp contracts for another year or two.

FWIW, Jourdan has the sense that they may let Witherspoon walk depending on how they work the compensatory picks this year (different than years previously as they'll be spenders this year).

We may need two CBs and ideally it would be nice for one to be a vet. That being said, I haven't looked at the FA CB class much.

I'm 80/20 on doing that.
Jaylon Johnson and L’Jarius Sneed are the top two. After that, there are some guys who are on the wrong side of their prime, or not clearly better options than Witherspoon.

I want to keep him but honestly not draining the coffers for a guard.

We have some holes elsewhere that are more pressing.

He was great this year but as Oldschool mentioned it was one year.

I doubt the Rams will overpay for a guard with one good year.

So Shelton is a FA too since he played more than 55% of the snaps...

That would be nice but Corbett was 2019 and Dotson 2023. Terrific pick-ups but they don't happen often.

Do we know that there was even an attempt to find someone else? With the exception of the prior season in an attempt to fill holes due to all of the injuries they seemed to be content with David Edwards, Coleman Shelton, Austin Blythe between those seasons. They also appear to be banking on the belief that Bruss and some questionable depth would pan out.

At least I don't recall any other veteran interior linemen brought in during the offseasons between 2019 and 2023.

Lol yeah that's true. They have to do it correctly. But the von Miller one was different to me. I think they thought they had him locked in and got blindsided. I don't think they made a move until after von signed. So I think they panicked. Hopefully they learned.
