Is it possible that the Rams think Shelton will play better between Avila and Dotson than he did between the Bears awful guards?
I am thinking, hoping he is still a backup at the middle three spots.
Geez I was praying for no guaranteed money. SMH.

This is almost as nauseating as I feel every time I see Reeder lining up at ILB.
OT I know, but I do hope we address ILB by the 4th rd. Omar needs a partner.

For what it's worth.... decidedly mixed assessments of Shelton from Bears fans. A few excerpts from a thread from a month ago, prior to free agency:

"Coleman Shelton - 29 year old starting C for CHI - this is the guy we are trying to upgrade. Not much to add about Shelton beyond he started very poorly but finished the season better. He seemed to have the speed needed to block LBers at the 2nd level but looked out of this league bad when asked to handle pretty much any DT by himself. Probably a decent backup (granted with no real upside to improve anymore) but not someone you want to start if you can avoid it, Spielman says he gets 2 years $5M a pop."

"I just like that Shelton at least stays on the field and I can rely that he'll be on the field (even if he's maybe slightly below average at his job)."

"I’d stick with Shelton and draft a guy in the 4-7. He played better as the year progressed and they can’t just spend all their cap on IOL."

Here's the thing about Shelton, Rams had an incredible offense in 2023 and the offensive line was a huge part of that. Rams had a top 5 line in 2023. And they had a desire to resign Shelton but he wanted to test the market so they pivoted to Jackson.

He'd be our starting center otherwise. I'm all for Limmer winning the job but if Shelton's line calls (think he shares them with Stafford) and communication can give us what we had in 2023 in terms of oline play, I'll take him every day with a y on the end of it even if he as a player has his limitations.

I don't remember them ever offering him a deal.

Exactly. Bad communication and a missed call is why we went home when we did.

Going to be some competition inside. Don't forget Leveston who I think the coaches like a lot.

Well the Bears fans got exposed to Shelton that's for sure. Slow starter out of camp every season? Yep. Can't hold anyone up by himself? Yep again.

This is why he is the depth and competition option.

SO your saying it’s a bad signing ?

That’s why The Rams brought him back & The Bears upgraded there guards as well as Shelton.

I like if if the money is right. We lost Jonah Jackson, so we could use some depth at C again, and you can never have too much competition. I just hope we are not paying him starter money. Limmer messed up at the most crucial times vs. Philly. But he was decent overall last season. He was also a rookie. He is cheap, young, and improving. I didn't mind Shelton when he was last in horns, but to me, he was no better than Limmer. And since last being in LA, he has gotten older, so if anything he might have declined, whereas Limmer should be ascending. Chicago fans were not happy with Shelton. That is never a good sign, but scheme etc. can make such a difference, I also would not read into it too much.
They tried to make Jackson into a utility guy like Shelton was but that whole thing seemed like it was last minute and neither Jackson or Avila seemed to play up to potential all year. But I’m surprised McVay wants to run it back since a breakdown at center is what cost them a run at the SB.

I don't care much either way about Jake, but I do wish he'd learn to be more careful in how he uses language sometimes. Saying ""he will be the starting center" is just plain unprofessional IMO. Jake has no way of knowing that. That's his opinion, and he should state it as such. He's done this before, where he loses some credibility when he tries to give the impression he's more plugged in than he really is.
That’s how these platforms work unfortunately, if you search for rams content you see a bunch of guys claiming “ incredible announcements” that turn out to be, wouldn’t it be awesome if this happened, instead.

I really hate this deal. Hopefully it turns out to be yet another time I’m wrong.

Shelton is a desperation signing, only because of his familiarity with Stafford and system.

Just like why they kept Noteboom, Reeder and Bobby Evans. Drives me crazy why they keep players not worth a damn.

Shelton is better than any of the players you just named, Bubba.

It is funny how it seems to be the same positions they do this sort of thing with, as well. Rams under McVay have won in spite of the OL not so much due to it. Title season they started slow and weren't even good at picking up stunts and the like until midseason.

Once again I think they should hire Munchak. Quit having him moonlight. Pay him well, get him in here to run the show. Create a new position called OL Overlord that slots in above our current OL Coach. Or fire said coach to make room for him.
