I've seen no more interest for Shula for head coaching spots anywhere.

On a side note I wonder how difficult it would be for McVay to move on from his long time friend if the defense underachieves in 2026. Would he get more rope that he should?
He was able to move away from Wade with impunity, dont see how he'd have an issue with Shula
Could always re-assign him somewhere, give him a fugazy Asst HC title

Are your familiar with Jourdan Rodrigue? She initially reported, back in 2019 or so, that Morris was not running his own scheme, because Mcvay requested a particular kind of defense. She said that continued the entire time Morris was here. I know it sounds crazy, but she was the most reputable reporter that the Rams ever had. I agree with you that they need better personnel though.
He's projecting what he wants to believe on what we all know having heard it many times.

If McVay is a fan of the Fangio defense AND instructs his DCs that's the way he wants to play it (keep everything in front and react) how come the Rams D's doesn't look anything like the Eagles Fangio D?

Players?

Philly #5 in pts (19.1) ; Rams #10 (20.4)
Philly #7 in YPP (4.9) ; #13 (5.2)

You see any CB's on the Rams like there are on the Eagles? Defensive philosophy only goes so far without the horses.

Do you think it's McVay who has his thumbprint on the defense? I just looked up Shula's resume - he had only been a DC for one year and that was at John Carroll in 2014. If I remember correctly, when we were looking for a DC, Vic Fangio was still available. I think we need to find a DC who has had experience and success at that. Shula's defense looks just like Raheem's - bend but don't break. We blitzed one time last night and got home with it. I get it if your corners can't cover but why not at least take that chance and see if you can get to Darnold instead of trying to cover unsuccessfully? I just didn't see any adjustments by Shula and think he's in over his head. True, we have the lowest paid defense in the league. If I'm Stafford, I go to McVay today and say, "I'll come back but you have to fix that defense and special teams. I'm not going through another year of this shit."
Biggest problem is this defense broke more than they bended this year. We NEED an experienced DC with a track record of success.

McVay doesn't fuck around. If he loses faith in his friend he will end up taking some shit ass college job like Coen did. And McVay will talk him up like he was a massive loss but had to take that opportunity.

Coen ended up just fine. Shula would too. But I think Shula is about to get loaded up with offseason talent.

And yet the defense allowed 18.8 PPG. They allowed the 7th least TDs in the NFL, 34 (2 per game). Leader allowed 28.
Biggest problem we have is we don't have a CB that's worth a damn.
Imagine how good we could be with a stud CB and 1 big, fast, snot popping stud ILB.

I think both Shula and Pleasant are good coaches. But I also think they're both learning. So wanted to get that established. Don't hate on either of them and I think what McVay sees in them is no doubt legitimate.

But one potential problem between the two of them, in combination, is they may be weak on corner expertise. And some may not like such a suggestion. But the facts as I see them are:

1. Shula only did one year with the secondary. And it was our '22 season which was hideous. Catastrophic. The very next year he was moved back to backers and edge.

2. Pleasant is safety background. He got scapegoated in Detroit, I think at least, but doesn't seem to have a great handle on corners either judging from the fact both he and Shula must have signed on to the idea of this year's corner group. Which I think is an indicator of things, as most of this board knew corner was completely reliant on a great rush.

3. Now maybe both these guys jumped on McVay's desk this past offseason about corner and were told to make do. We simply don't know what was discussed. And this matters too.

4. On top of all this the Rams have a "safeties" coach, but they don't have a "corners" coach.

So it seems to me that it's very possible there isn't enough coaching going on with these corners. Or maybe better way to put it is there is room to go get a corner specific coach to handle the basic shit with these guys, like for example getting their motherfucking heads around to look for the ball. Or how to be ready to swoop when you're playing off so you can get a four yard stop instead of giving up 8+ or a first down.

And if we're about to move hot and heavy on corners in FA and the draft, in some combination, then having a voice you trust telling the scouts exactly what we need sounds like a good fucking idea. So let's hire a corner coach.

However after running my mouth, I have discovered.....

Fangio's Eagles D allowed 34 offensive TDs (28 PAT; 2 2pt Conv) and 29 FGs (323 pts allowed)
The Rams D allowed 34 offensive TDs (31 PAT; 3 2pt Conv) and 27 FGs (322 pts allowed)

:wow2:

They still don't look the same.

One of those top 3 or Rodriguez please.

As of today, I think McVay would need to have some sort of defensive philosophical epiphany before the Rams defense can change, and be a bit more aggressive going forward.
Then again , it's probably more likely that he and Snead just find some better players to execute the current strategy..

McVay always reacts to losing. When something bites him in the ass he moves on it.

Defense bit him in the ass this year. So he's gonna move on it. Now that doesn't mean he's going to make his DC blitz more. But it does mean he's gonna fix his corner room.
