I would not seek him out, but also would not be opposed to a reunion. Ideally somebody poaches Morris so we can get a comp pick, leaving a vacancy for the Rams DC position. In such an event, we could do a lot worse than bringing Staley back for round 2.

I expect Morris gets a gig this year. Confusing QBs with the shit rush he has here this season, plus the... Let's say somewhat short collection of DBs... That is extremely valuable. I don't know how we're in those low teens in passer rating.

And I want that comp pick. But by the time Morris gets a gig Staley will already be signed on with one of the head coaching candidates. In fact I figure Staley might be Morris' DC of choice if he and McVay have not already agreed on either Henderson or Pleasant accompanying him. Staley would be a very strong feather in Morris' hat for the interviews.

How the staff moves go down is probably the most intriguing part of this whole thing to me. You can't trust McVay's presser takes because he is completely full of shit in that he talks up everyone. But his moves will tell the story on who he covets. That guy/s won't be allowed to leave.

Completely agree with the post's intention/point-of-emphasis that head coaching hires are a crap-shoot, with a high-percentage of failure. However, don't agree that Brian Daboll is 'on-the-way' out in New York.

Robert Saleh is more likely to go but I expect he will return to the dysfunctional-Jets in 2024.
Saleh would be a great defensive hire if Morris gets a heading coaching gig. He knows Shanahan's offense well.

I'm not certain Saleh gets fired. He got fucked over by Rodgers getting hurt right away. I'd give him another year.

In theory yes, but I personally hope we retain Morris as a change will set us back a bit as we adjust to the nuances of a new DC. In Saleh's case I think he plays a 1 gap ala the one and only Wade Phillips

If…. and that is a huge IF… I would think he would go back to SF, don’t think we would be that lucky to land him, but like Merlin said he got dealt a shitty hand so perhaps he has another year to prove his HC worth…

Staley has a connection with McVay. Morris came along after Staley left. If Morris gets a job then I think it would be more likely that Staley ends up back with the Rams.

San Francisco has a defensive coordinator. What would Saleh’s job be there? I think he’d prefer to go where there is a DC job that would be his alone. Plus, Saleh was with SF for a few years. Would he gain much by going back there? It would seem that proving himself elsewhere would be more advantageous.

I think the that in a league where offensive mineed head coaches seem to have the most success, it’s just going to be harder each year for a defensive coach to get hired as a head coach. Morris has done well with less. One guy that I think has been more impressive is Brian Flores. His defense is very good and it’s not just Zimmer’s defensive personnel or scheme that he’s doing it with. It looks a lot like the Patriots defensive scheme from around 2017. I think he deserves another shot as a head coach, but I wonder if Flores will be black balled after the way his stint in Miami ended with a discrimination case.

I am aware one replaced the other Elm. Staley ending up with the Rams is just less likely than him signing on with a new staff because that puts him in a holding pattern where he is requiring Morris to get a job.

So I think he is a desired DC piece for these forming staffs. And one of the strongest will be Morris. So I think Staley signing on with him is a possibility.

Oh you meant because it may take longer this winter for Morris to get a head coaching job, and Staley would likely already be gone to another team before McVay or Morris would be looking for a DC. I misunderstood your point there.

That may be the case. It’s also possible that since Staley will be making enough money from the Chargers this year that he could afford to be a little more selective with where he goes. I could even see him taking on an assistant head coaching position or defensive consultant role for a year, if he’s not happy with the offers he gets to be a defensive coordinator.

He could also pull a Kliff Kingsbury and pull back for a full season.

Yeah on the human side of things there is no telling. If he's feeling tired and patient then telling McVay to keep his name in the hat for the DC job if Raheem gets a job is a possibility. Just seems like most of these guys want to jump right back in at DC when they get axed, as in comparison it's a vacation to running the entire thing.

For these guys building staffs I would think Staley is a top 3 choice. Which is to say he should have the option to join one of the strongest groups that are likely to get a gig. Because a lot of the others will be guys still making their bones, where there is projection, so a guy who has put up a top defense at this level is very valuable. He has name recognition too with owners for the hiring. So basically while McVay might be luke warm in terms of trying to lock him up, those new staffs will be knocking his door down. And that's where I think he slides that direction basically.

I wonder if there is bad blood between McVay and Staley also. The only time I recall McVay blocking one of his assistants from leaving was when Staley tried to poach O'Connell

Actually he blocked former defensive backfield coach Jonathan Cooley from joining Kevin O'Connell's staff in Minnesota last year. I don't think there is bad blood, but after losing his DC, he wasn't going to let his OC go too IMHO.

Understood, but IIRC O'Connell was the first time he had blocked a move which kind of rubbed the wrong way. Staley obviously knew that he'd be replaced, and I have to figure they would have talked about who was hands off. O'Connell would have been on a short list I imagine.

Yeah he might have been a bit more pissed at Staley because the O'Connell poaching probably had "you can be playcaller" overtones which McVay is touchy about.

That's the thing. He did great. For one year. And as has been discussed he
was using a defense he learned from Fangio and it was fairly new to NFL.

So what current evidence shows is it is possible that 2020 was not indicative of
his skills. Now that there is more data any analysis has to include both the Rams
and Chargers jobs.

That is why I said he's smart. That he's not a bum because he failed with Chargers
And I also said he's not a god based on one year with Rams.

I wish him well, I feel sorry for him. I don't think he's dumb or anything but I also
think evidence shows that the anomaly was the Rams not the Chargers.

When he gets his next job we will, of course, have more data.

As of now it may be fair to say he was not as good as he was with Rams and not
as bad as he was with the Chargers.

Because of that, I mentioned he will go somewhere as a consultant and eventually
get another DC job. I just don't think the DC job would be in LA

I don’t necessarily disagree. At the same time, if AD pushes for Staley to come back, that’d be a big deal. Of course that presumes Raheem Morris gets a HC gig which I think he should and deservedly so, ESPECIALLY after this year
