Just keep in mind, the Rams are the first visit Wagner is making among teams of interest. Unless he was overwhelmed with an offer, there’s no reason he would have signed up until he did his due diligence.
And we all know the Rams are not in a position to offer an overwhelming (aka a shit ton of $$) offer.

I just have a hard time believing this is his first visit. It's been almost 3 weeks since he was cut. But you never know!

Well, that's what's been reported, so I dont know why it wouldnt be true as it surely explains why he hasnt signed elsewhere

"The rich may be getting richer. The reigning Super Bowl champion Rams are hosting Bobby Wagner on a free-agent visit and the two sides have a mutual interest in doing a deal that lands the All-Pro linebacker in Los Angeles, according to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network. This is also the first reported visit by Wagner this offseason. "
"Bobby Wagner spent Wednesday afternoon visiting the Los Angeles Rams, his first visit with a team as a free agent." SNIP "The 49ers and Cardinals are also reportedly interested in Wagner, so he has his options. But considering the Rams are the only team he’s visited, they might be at the top of his list."

Yeah, I saw that's what was reported. Just surprises me is all. You'd think he's had phone conversations unless there's an absolute tiny amount of teams he's interested in.

I am just being overly pessimistic in that I think if he leaves Los Angeles without a contract he will no be signing with the Rams! I certainly hope I am wrong (Wagner and the Rams could just be finalizing the contract?!)!!

To free up money to sign Wagner--- I think they're waiting on Donald's contract extension to fall in place.

I'm sure the Rams asked Donald what he thinks of adding Miller. Maybe even seeing if they can work a deal with him based on Donald's requests... in other words containing a potentially back breaking new contract to fit Wagner in now and OBJ later. We know Donald wanted Von and OBJ back, and since Von left, Wagner could have a similar impact for the Rams D. He may not have the pass rushing skills Von has, but similarly has all-pro status. And then there's "The Donald Factor." Players on D have bigger years in his presence. Imagine Wags having a big year with offenses having to contend with them both...plus Floyd, etc. He'd work very well in the Rams unbalanced rush that they employed in the SB.

This is also the stage where you begin hating your target to protect against rejection, but would be insanely pleased if he still signed….

Lot of folks see him as a two down LB. Chance the Rams see him that way, judging from him leaving without a deal. They're only gonna pay him in a certain range for that. Maybe he'll come circling back if other teams are in that ballpark too.
Agree.

I just rewatched the two last games 9ers/Bengals for the reason to review just how much of a need is there for the two interior ILB'er posts. All it did was reinforce & even boost my previous thoughts on this ILB unit.

I am sure DC Morris's defense will get much better performances from this unit than they did. The main fact is having not depended on Troy Reeder as our main top ILB'er any longer improved this unit much. TR's performance particularly in the 9ers gm was simply pathetic. There is a reason he was not offered a contract.

I still think that Travin Howard is far better than what ROD's opinions of him are. I would challenge any of you who has a poor opinion of TH to go rewatch just the 9ers Championship game & see how well he played in pass defense & run support. TH is always in position & around the ball when DC Morris lets him on the field. TH will be a very good starting WS ILB'er for us this upcoming season.

Ernest Jones just needs to get on the field & remain healthy. EJ is far better playing the MLB'er post than WSILB post. Signing Wagner puts EJ in a post that does not best suit him. EJ needs to get bigger/stronger. EJ will also be much improved over TR by a large margin.

Taylor Rapp is going to see his majority of snaps @ ILB. Christian Rozeboom back up MLB'er played well on ST's. I would not forget about resigned Antoine Brooks Jr. to back up the WSILB post. Those 5 above-mentioned defenders will work out fine!

The remaining Salary cap $$ needs to be used on OLB'er post,
not the ILB'er post.

After losing Von Miller, Rams know they must find new ways to rush the passer

This offseason has been more about departures than arrivals for the Los Angeles Rams, with Von Miller being their biggest loss so far. After it looked like he’d be heading back to the Rams, he opted to sign a six-year, $120 million deal with the Bills.

That wasn’t an indication of the Rams not making their pass rush a priority. They still very much want to ensure they have the talent in place to get after the quarterback, whether it’s by promoting from within, signing a free agent, acquiring someone via trade or adding help in the draft.

“Realistically, you lose Von Miller, it’s hard to say, OK, there’s another human being like Von Miller on the planet. There’s one of him, he’ll go to the Hall of Fame because of it,” Snead said this week. “But with that being said, since 2017, we’ve been a team that consistently ranks near the top in sacks and pressures and things like that. It’s just come in different ways with different people. I think when you lose a player like Von, still want to pressure the QB, might have to do it in different ways with different people and we’ve had to do that since 2017 and definitely want to continue doing that because we believe fundamentally, we believe that’s one of the better ways to frustrate a quarterback over the course of a game.”

The Rams aren’t strictly focused on edge rushers as a way to generate pressure, either. The goal is to get Aaron Donald freed up inside, and Snead knows one path to doing that is by adding an interior rusher – similar to the way they brought in Ndamukong Suh in 2018.

“Maybe it’s not in an OLB. Maybe it’s in someone that lines up next to Aaron inside. Maybe it’s another linebacker,” he said. “You’ve just got to do different things to attack protections and knowing that most protections, once the games get started, for the most part, they’re going to try to take away Aaron Donald. They’re going to try to figure out a way to get four hands on Aaron Donald, sometimes even a fifth where it’s almost a two-and-a-half. Not a double-team, almost a triple-team – 2.5-team.”

The Rams have younger players on their roster, including Terrell Lewis and Chris Garrett, so perhaps they could ascend to a starting role and establish themselves as key players on defense.

“How do you ignite pressure? How does some of our unknown players, less-experienced players win one-on-ones, generate pressure and earn a reputation themselves?” Snead asked. “Or is it from attacking protections with different games and things like that? There’s a lot of ways we’re gonna have to do it and that’s what the offseason’s for.”

One way or another, the Rams are going to get pressure on the quarterback. They’ve brought in players to help with that before, from Suh to Miller to Dante Fowler Jr. and Leonard Floyd. We just don’t have a clear picture of how they’ll get it done yet.

I completely concur with your assessment, BonifayRam.

We are clearly seeing the same things at ILB.

I am now thinking that signing Bobby Wagner might not be the best use of our cap dollars in preparing us for another SB run.

I would much prefer a focus on Edge and/or outside CB via FA, trade, or draft. Those 2 positions are where the maximum bang for the buck is at.

Unless the rams think they can use Wagner to someway pressure qbs, I'm leaning towards edge and CB if we only get 2 starter quality FAs. But man, I really want wagner.

Nah. The Rams can’t offer the $$ other teams can. If he’s a 49er I’ll just hate him period.

Snead has pulled many rabbits out of his hat over the years. I am sure he notices many options that many of us just do not see as we drool over an aging MLB'er that has been a big thorn in the Rams side for a decade.

Options
(A)-Trades before the Draft
(B)- Trades during the Draft
(C)-Trades after the Draft concludes
(D)- Post-June 1st team releases
(E)- Pre Regular Season Releases cut downs

Having salary cap $$$ in reserve is a very wise move IMO.

An OLB'er who had a good 2021 season and was released before FA began for cap reasons that is still a FA is OLB'er Kyle Van Noy. If the Rams need a veteran to go with youngsters Hollins, Garrett, Lewis, then he may be willing to consider less $$$.

The only 30 yr old 6-foot-3, 250-pound Kyle Van Noy played in 16 regular-season games last season in New England, totaling 66 tackles to rank fourth on the team. He also had 5 sacks (second on the team) and 10 passes defended in addition to a forced fumble and interception returned for a touchdown.

I think you boys are ignoring the trolling potential of having a future Hawks HOFer playing for us, abusing the Hawks twice a year. Think of the trolling gold? That's worth $5 million by itself!

Agree and disagree. If the Rams intend to run the Staley defense as they’ve been doing then yes.

If they signed Wagner they could shift to more straight 3/4 formations with Jones on the strong side to cover tight ends and Wagner on the other side maybe even more shaded over the Center.

Miller helped immensely in stopping the Niners rushing attacks and their screens. They aren’t finding that presence unless they sign Clowney and he’s asking a lot. He may not fit the culture either. Wagner could be a huge boost against the run. They’d just have to adjust the scheme.

I think the hold up as usual is money. The Rams don’t want to pay a two down LBer a lot, and that is exactly how they’d like to use him. He’s a liability in coverage.

If he had been on the market a few years back teams would be flying him in on their owners' private jets. This is what happens when skills erode unfortunately. Question is can he get his mind around what his role is going to be now. Because it looks like the market has spoken.

I'm sure his agent has fielded calls, ultimately he's in no rush to sign a deal. He'll get his $$. Probably talking to some teams and will visit the few he wants most, and let them "compete" for his services
