Baker has always struggled with reading defenses. Once he masters it Mayfield has the arm talent to light up defenses. That is why one or two years in this system and with the mentorship of Stafford on the nuances of reading a defense, will pay dividends when he hits the field. Unlike Kyler Murray, Mayfield is trying to improve. This is his opportunity to really take his development to the next level. Baker has a work ethic that with the right coaching and veteran mentorship around him should elevate him from a tier 2 QB into a solid tier one franchise QB.

Baker has the talent but is in need of a new paint job and a whole lot of polish. I bought a new '65 mustang in my senior year. My neighbor bought it for his son who never got to drive it as he was sent away to prison. So in 1967, I bought it from him. It was one of the most unreliable cars I've ever owned. But I kept improving it and polished the hell out of it. Don't get me wrong I drove it daily all the way through college (San Fernando Valley State College) LMAO it's now CSUN. My dad kept it under wraps on jack stands in his garage while I was in service. Eventually in 1980 when I returned to LA from living in Seattle, I wanted to start my own business so I sold the car to my brother on the condition it stayed in the family. His son overhauled the complete drive train and continued to use it. My nephew is career Army currently overseas deployed. The mustang is in my brother's garage in Vail, AZ. I still go there to wash it and polish it. My nephew has turned down huge offers to sell it.

What I'm alluding to is even a flawed machine with the proper support and TLC has become an incredibly valuable thing. I could have walked away from it a long time ago but didn't. Mayfield could be the same way. IMO he's been abused by the coaches he's played for. Some of it was Baker's own fault. But if he has truly matured as it seems to be, then IMO he needs an overhaul. If done properly, the Rams will have that diamond they covet. Even if they aren't completely successful, Baker will have accrued value either as a comp pick or in trade.

I really hope he agrees to stay on with the Rams as a backup until Stafford retires (But, I do have my doubts)!!!

Baker is the backup QB for the Rams who is starting now.

He called LA home,so his future might be a Ram? If he is looking at the big picture he stays a Ram.

How interesting would it be if Baker & OBJ made up? I still say OBJ is the hat fit for GB.The only factor there imo was(is) the Packers did not do there part of it all.

Back to Baker Mayfield. He will be a better QB just from his time with The Rams.

I'd be surprised if OBJ ever plays again. His self-righteous attitude about only wanting to play in the playoff and not during the regular season really hit FOs cold. There are lingering suspicions that his knee is permanently damaged and will not hold up over a season. That is why he backed away from Dallas the minute they wanted a medical exam on him. At his age, I think he's done and is simply milking the celebrity cow for all he can get. Personally, I don't want him back with that elitist attitude. From all I've heard, Baker has matured and is a good teammate and not a locker room cancer.

Baker has an opportunity to take the next step up in his career. Let's see how smart he is or isn't this off season.

We all know Baker would be better off backing up Stafford. I'm sure he knows it too. But in the end its always all about money. If someone offers him more than we can pay, he likely would take it. Whatever happens they can't expect to go into next season with Wolford and/or Perkins.

Usually, I would completely agree. However, maybe Mayfield could (really Should) be the exception.

Mayfield will have offers for 2023 but ... Just Maybe ... he is more focused on being in a Good Spot vs. more money and a better opportunity to start. I realize that sounds a silly; and is definitely against the norm. However, if Mayfield flames-out with his next team, future options might be very limited. An opportunity to start on a bad team; or taking more money to be a back-up on an average team, with a young/durable QB, may not be the smart way to go.

Maybe ... again, just maybe ... it would be smarter to hit the Re-Set-Button and return on a one-year, incentive-laden-deal tied to playing-time, to back-up Stafford.

Even I don't know if I'm buying the Bull-shit I just wrote but I'm REALLY trying to get the Rams a better #2 QB.

His film review session with McVay after the Raiders game was probably all high fives and bro hugs. But this week I imagine it was more like a colonoscopy.

Mayfields future will be decided over the next few games. If he plays lights out, he will get a nice contract and move on. If he sucks, he might accept a back up role with the Rams. So far I think the results are mixed.

I think its Ram colored glasses in saying its better for his career to be a backup with the Rams.
If he isnt playing, it is detrimental to his career
Only way taking a backup deal works in Staff's favor is if Stafford goes down
Otherwise, playing in a place where he could compete and see actual game time would be more beneficial, provided its a legit system.
I know there are factors, but I look at a guy like Blake Bortles who rode pine for a year, got to digest McVay system, and then what happened? Never got another shot

Even though I posted the above, I mostly agree. And my glasses are certainly tinted with the Rams' colors.

I think there will be OTHER options for Mayfield that would give him a better opportunity to start from day-1; or more back-up-$. However, there may only be a few of those opportunities; and they may all have clear negatives ... weak team with a defensive-minded head coach or limited talent at the skill positions; or a young starter that is not coming-off serious injury (spinal contusion and concussion).

Perhaps ... will you give it a Small Chance? ... Mayfield sees the limited options and thinks a one-year deal, with incentives and a guarantee that the Rams would not franchise him for 2024 might be a good option.

Before Mayfield was released by Carolina, I threw out Sam Darnold as this type of one-year, re-set option. I thought Darnold was a reasonable option because he has flamed-out with two teams; and is a California-guy. Mayfield has also technically flamed-out with two teams but it can be argued not to the degree of Darnold.

I really hope we can find a way to hang on to baker. I honestly can’t see more than another year or 2 for Stafford and we don’t have a clear way to replace him with someone of mayfields talent level.

It will probably be case by case. If the Jets are all over him for example he would be wise to stick around. Given the way his career has gone there is certainly value in playing for a coach who he trusts, and developing a bit under him. A year or two to advance his skills is not the worst thing that can happen to a QB, given how long they can play once they learn how to win from the pocket. If he can learn to do that.

But also from his perspective and that of Stafford the Rams are going to need to make meaningful moves on the OL. Investments are required. If he is told "oh yeah we're gonna have Boom and Allen back next year so we're good on the OL it was just bad luck" he should run from this team. So there's a lot of stuff at play that will influence things. Could end up being that Asshole Face takes over the Colts and wants him, or Shanahan is calling then yeah I think taking the bigger contract and job is the way to go. But we're probably gonna have to wait and see which teams are vying for him and what the Rams offer him and all that.

Bottom line for me is I think we have a chance to get him on a short termer. Maybe a year or two. But you're right that he won't overlook a great offer for the right situation, question is whether one of those comes to him.

Looks like you might be more right than wrong as it pertains to Darnold. Carolina may end up winning that division.

Baker will have his off days like against the Packers, but ultimately, I want to re-sign him. He's been amazing for us. I'm impressed with his ability to find the open receiver, to look defenders off, to zip the ball, make any throw needed.

Does he have the arm talent of Stafford? No, but who does? I hope we re-sign him, but if we don't, I guarantee we'll get a third round compensatory pick for him; he's played up to that level.
