Baker is who he is. He can make some incredible throws. But like most QB's who are middle of the road or less he needs better personnel around him. He's still better than what we had at backup.

Now he's auditioning for a contract and starting spot somewhere next year. Sucks for him to be doing it with preseason caliber talent around him. But it just might make him more affordable for us. I'd be good with Stafford and Baker going into next season.
And a decent rookie prospect

The OL sucks, but Baker is 100% at fault for that play. The OL gave him a huge amount of space to slide up into and make the throw. Baker didn't climb the pocket far enough, which let Kenny Clark hit him while he was throwing. It was poor awareness by Baker, not bad play from the OL.
Totally agree. He can scramble pretty good, but he does not always have the pocket awareness of the great ones. All he had to do was step up in the pocket but instead he allowed the d-linemen to close in on him.

This team would be absolutely unwatchable if we had stayed with wolf and perk. It's barely watchable with bake, haha.... What a disaster of a season. Feels like old times...

Is someone we are probably going to wish was still on the team next year.

A full off-season with the Rams andwe might not have to spend draft capital we don’t have to bring in someone else.

.... a high end backup and occasional starter.

Not a legit starter in the NFL.
Short, to the point and dead on.
It's like he does a line before every snap, and feels like he thinks he needs to/expects to make a great play on every throw.
Right now he isn't an NFL QB, but in a year or two under McVay, like @Merlin said, maybe he becomes one.
Personally, I don't think so.

Baker Mayfield is ...

An ideal back-up to Matthew Stafford on a one-year, incentive-laden-deal tied to playing-time. Unfortunately, that scenario is less-than-likely (but far from impossible) because Mayfield may get an opportunity to start somewhere else in 2023; or would probably get more money to be a back-up somewhere else.

The reason it's far from impossible that Mayfield could be a Ram in 2023 is because, at this point in his career, an opportunity to start and/or more money to be a back-up with another team ... may NOT be the driving factors. An opportunity to start on a bad team, or to back-up on an average team, with a young/durable QB, may not be the smart way to go.

Personally, I consider Sam Darnold to be another pending free agent quarterback in the above category.

Of course he could light it up while filling in for Jalen Hurts and price himself out, but the guy I'd like to see brought in for QB2 is Gardner Minshew

I would love that too.

Between Mayfield, Minshew and Darnold, who is more likely to get a real opportunity to start in 2023?

I enjoy the Game of Quarterback Musical Chairs. When you add-up the good ones and the young high draft choices from the past couple years and the up-coming draft, the number is less than 32. Some teams have to settle / gamble / pray.

I figured he'd come back down to earth a bit last night. But anyone expecting him to lead us to victory in Green Bay was a bit delusional. He's playing behind a shit Oline with our B team at receiver. He also is still learning the offense. Hopefully we can keep him next year as the #2 QB.

Guys that will or likely will be available include:
Asshole Brady, Baker Mayfield, Sam Darnold, Gstring Garoppolo, Gardner Minshew, Jacoby Brissett, Geno Smith, Andy Dalton, Taylor Heinicke, Mike White, Lamar Jackson, Tyler Huntley, Marcus Mariota, Derek Carr, Carson Wentz

I agree but I don’t see many as legitimate options for the Rams.

A few will be attractive starters. Many will be highly compensated back-ups. Those types don’t seem like fits for the Rams.

Rams are good to go at QB. I expect them to get Baker inked as backup for a couple years, which would be good for both sides. Rams will undoubtedly try to get that done before the season is out, too, so they can concentrate on protections and the many other holes on this roster.

Oh I agree, I wasnt really referring to the Rams, was pivoting towards your musical chairs analogy (which is spot on btw)
Hard to even say how many spots will be open

Teams I could see interested in Baker as competition for their #1 or at least stop-gap if they draft QB
New England, Miami, Raiders (if they release/trade Carr), Baltimore (If they dont re-sign Lamar), Tennessee (if they release/trade Tannehill), Texans, Giants, Carolina (Yes, I know. He was on great terms there and who know who the HC will be), Heck the whole NFC South

It’s hard for anyone to carry a

Hm.
New England? He's not enough of a pocket guy to use the entire field. I think that makes him a no-go there.
Miami? If, for some reason, they decide to move on from Tua, it won't be for a step backward. They'd be going for Jimmy or nothing, imo.
Raiders? Why? Carr is much better and doesn't cost that much, big picture.
Baltimore? I don't see them changing their offense.
Tennessee.. No idea.
Texans? Davis has better stats on a worse team than Mayfield did.

I don't know. Maybe?
But, he wasn't beating out Sam Darnold.

I wanted him this past offseason too. I was TICKED when the Eagles got him.

If Baker gets a starting job as FA he’s gone. I hope he stays and he needs to really calculate the benefit of staying vs leaving.

Maybe the silver lining in all this McVay sees the backup QB position differently. Wolford and Perkins a stark contrast to what a Mayfield type offers.
