I don't like college football at the moment because of the impacts of NIL and, more importantly, the portal.

One of my very favorite things about college football was watching the kids grow for my team from year to year.

Now? Shit.. I don't know who's on the roster, year to year. As others have mentioned, the game day atmosphere can be incredible... but.. that's just not doing much for me at the moment.

And.. Arch sucked. Third year in and that's his performance? Woof. Yes, one game.. all the caveats.. but, wow.
I hate NIL too, now everybody can play their players millions besides Alabama and Georgia.

So Many People ... Talking So Much ... and yet, saying So VERY Little about football."
So True, unfortunately equally as true in the NFL anymore too.
I try to listen to the local radio broadcast where they are somewhat forced to stay on task. Problem there is A/V sync is often off

Nil, transfers and conference realignment has ruined college football. I only watch now for fun gambling with friends and to see potential future Rams.

Disagree.

It was imperfect before, it’s a shit show now.

I'll agree to disagree. I'd rather see kids get a choice rather than see kids lack them entirely. As for money? The more stories like Arian Foster (who - in his own anecdote - had to beg a coach to get him something to eat one night in college or he was, to quote him: "going to do something stupid") of athletes who lacked the funds to get extra meals (which, when you consider long practices and weight room stuff, they'd need as an athlete; look how much Michael Phelps ate, if you need an example).

NIL isn't perfect. The transfer portal isn't perfect. But I'd rather see college kids have some form of control and the chance to actually contribute instead of languishing on the bench rather than the coaches entirely controlling every aspect of their lives and college careers.

Mateer looked good today for Oklahoma
I like his pocket sense, seems to have good instincts which is a big plus as that's not an easy thing to teach. Also he makes quick and instinctive adjustments, like that screen with the rusher, while putting the ball on the target. After the INT he went right back to a midrange pass over the middle in traffic, so he seems to have some balls to him in his reads and/or has a short memory. All good things. I really like the kid, reminds me a little of Dart with the combo of pocket presence plus ballsy reads.

Wonder how strong his arm is. He is accurate but his wideouts were running free and wide open all over the joint, so can he rip it with accuracy when the windows are tighter. But will definitely keep an eye on him.

I never felt like Texas was a good fit for Arch, given that I think Sark is a second rate offensive try-hard. If Arch is going to be great he'll be able to breathe life into that scheme, but with this being his first year he's going to have a lot of instances where shit he expects isn't quite what the gameplan prepped him for.

If he was smart he'd play out his first year in Texas and if it's too much a struggle to do that then transfer to another program that has a more capable offensive mind at the fore. Though I am fine with him having Sark negatively affect his trajectory into the league and thus McVay having a shot at him. Possibly. Well extreme longshot.

Of course it's hard to blame the kid for wanting Texas, given the quality of their sororities. :fire1:

So far I haven't seen any of the top quarterbacks show they are number one overall material. Sellers still has over half a game left today. We'll see how he does.

Its early. First game can be tough trying to find their footing. Defenses are usually ahead of the offenses the first couple weeks. What I'll be curious to see is not only how they do the rest of the way, but how they do in January playing bowl games and playoffs. The guys who play big in those games are not as likely to be overwhelmed at the NFL level.

We don't really disagree.

Keith Jackson was terrific but he retired twenty years ago.

My commentary was directed at the coverage today ... not two decades ago. My comment yesterday was:
"By-the-way, I found the ESPN coverage to be beyond awful. So Many People ... Talking So Much ... and yet, saying So VERY Little about football."
Well, Gus Johnson & Joel Klatt are an amazing broadcast team. Gus is a master and you should give them a listen when you get the chance.

I liked the Nussmeier kept competing and glad LSU won because I dislike Dabo Swinney, who is always complaining even when the Refs gifted him a call that should have been a touchdown for LSU. Back to Nussmeier, kept his team in the game although the LSU defense was stellar.

ILB Whit Weeks was a machine both rushing the passer and coverage too, was all over the field. I would communicate I would love the Rams to draft him, but Weeks would have to beat out Troy Reeder and you know the rest of the story.
Yes that was definitely a TD. I’m not a Dabo fan either. Nussmeier was running for his life most of that game. He has better weapons but the LSU offensive line didn’t look good, or Clemson front seven looked fantastic, or it’s a bit of both. Either way it’s tough to keep making completions on the run the whole game, no matter who you have to pass to.

Are you a fan of Alabama, Georgia. Ohio state, or Clemson? Those teams were hurt by the portal the most because of the reasons @
Memento stared. As a Penn State fan I love how the portal has made the playing field much more even. The gap in talented depth between many teams has been diminished. Parity is good for a sport.

It's better than it was where colleges like Georgia and Alabama would literally horde players until their senior or so years and where players basically couldn't leave without permission from their coaches (some of whom could be quite vindictive and petty). Is the portal perfect? Absolutely not. But there's more benefits than detriments when it all boils down to it.
The portal is better for the players too. For instance Beau Pribula looked great as Mizzou’s starter. It would be a shame for him to be sitting on Penn State’s bench this year.

USC QB was pretty good but hard to judge just how good against that competition.

I agree. This speaking as a fan of Mizzou, a team that has both benefitted and lost from the portal. I wish we didn't lose Williams Nwaneri to Nebraska in the portal, but in that same breath, we did get Damon Wilson II from Georgia and Beau Pribula from Penn State.

You win and lose with the portal. It gives the players options aside from languishing on the bench forever or until a coach sends them out in mop-up time.

How is that possible? I feel he allows the game to breathe, but still make the game exciting. Also has come up with some great nicknames too and the players seem to like him too. Is it because he constantly says “The Ohio State University?”

He seems to favor certain teams. He’s also a bit too much for my liking. It seems silly at times.
