in 2007 i began having what i thought were minor heart attacks. my cousin had heart surgery about 5 years earlier, and after his release i was at his apartment (watching the rams game most likely) and he showed me these tiny white pills they gave him. They were nitro-glycerin tablets and he told me "our family has a history of heart issues, so if you think you are having heart trouble, take one of these and get to the hospital quick".
so in '07 when i kept having what i thought were mild heart attacks, i would take one of the nitro pills, and the trouble would totally disappear in minutes.... but after 3-4 days of dealing with this, i got my oldest daughter, still living with me, and told her i'm going to the hospital, and i may not be back for awhile, and told her what i was dealing with...
being a single dad with an 18 yearold, her sister who was 15, and my youngest son who was 8 at the time i was naturally concerned with them being at home for any length of time...
off to the hospital i went and when i arrived, i told the receptionist that i may have been having mild heart attacks over the last few days. She chuckled and said "i'm not sure that is the case have a seat", and within a few minutes i was wheelchaired into a room and the doctor ordered a cat scan.
after the scan the doctor came into my room and told me i wasn't having heart attacks, but i did have pulmonary embolisms in my lungs... these are blood clots that start in your legs, most likely, and move up into your lungs.. they immediately iv'd me and put me on blood thinners...
i called my sister to tell her (she was a hospital receptionist 25 years) and she firmly told me "you have to do what the doctors say because those can kill you!" so every day the doctors would come in and i would ask them "when do i get to go home" because i was a single dad raising 3 kids at the time, and they kept saying "probably tomorrow". Every couple of hours, the whole time i was in there, a nurse would come in, and stick a needle in me, and they were, i guess, analyzing my thinning blood..
now all of my symptoms were non existent from the first day i was in there, and four days had passed, and it was now 3 days until thanksgiving. i had been telling anyone that would listen, and finally told the doctors about my kids, and told them "im going home tomorrow, period". So the doctors said ok we understand, we'll see what we can do.
they gave me a small amount of warfain (spelling) tablets and the doctor also said "i'm giving you a prescription for blood thinners that you have to administer yourself. i was told to give myself injections of the medication into my lower abdomen. the nurse explained how to do it and asked if i woud be okay with doing that, i said "of course, i just want to go home".. and i was released...finally..
so i left with my 6 injections to be applied over the next week, and my prescription for warfarin. now my sister knew i never really trusted the pharmaceutical/medical community because i know they save lives but it is also a business. this is why she was so stern with her "follow docs orders", and i'm a total naturalist that believes a healthy diet is pretty good medicine too.
i know, long post..
so i get home and look up what warfarin is, and find out it's a diluted form of rodent poison that thins your blood. so i immediately look for a natural alternative, and found out 3000 IU of vitamin E is equal to a single warfarin. so i finished my warfarin prescrip and started taking the 3k of vit E daily...
i have never returned to the hospital or doctor and it's been 18 years and as far as i know, im ok...
so with all that, im going positive and believe AJ will be fine... as for long airplane rides, there are aisles on the plane, he can get out of his seat and walk around, because i was told that long periods of inactivity can be a problem with my condition, and most likely his also..
im still working construction, and the kids are all grown and doing great...
AND.. still rooting for my rams... lol
go rams
