Disagree that drafting Simpson had ANYTHING to do with Bennett. Drafting Simpson had to do with Stafford, and post Stafford succession plan which Bennett never was in the discussion of.
That is correct. The rams told everyone that Bennett was drafted to be the back up. What is telling is that the Rams went out and got Jimmy G after that.

Yep. Bennett was drafted in 2023 and loss a lot of time when he took a leave from the team.
Enter Jimmy Garoppolo in 2024.

Well if they hold Bennett out, that's a wrap at QB2. Hope they have him play though. I want to see both of them out there.
Welp, I’ll eat my crow on that one. I thought for sure Stetson needed the reps and needed to prove himself. Legit sounds like McVay has seen enough, though.

If Ty doesn’t get any first team reps in the Cowboys joint practice, I think that will be pretty indicative the battle is over.

Man, there is a LOT of really exciting stuff in that piece. The Donald stuff is only the beginning. The observation that TFerg looks like he will be the 3rd receiving option behind Puka and Davante ... another plug for CJ Daniels ... the remarks about Max Klare and the depth of the TE room (I've never seen the room this deep in more than 50 years of Rams fandom) ... and the stuff about Corum looking like he's going to level up. This team is fucking loaded.

A must read.
Yes, good read.

Reps at QB don't really mean much in preseason, you're not playing a real defense. The calls are so mickey mouse it's high school ball, but you can still see get lineman reps in blocking on offense and defense, pass catchers and defenders can get reps to work on technique in space even if the call is nothing much.

Sure maybe in the 90s and 2000s it meant more cause offenses and defenses weren't as advanced but those days are over.

BUT WHAT ABOUT TY GETING REPS YOU SAY!!!!

Well Mr. Wet-behind-the-ears needs reps on things like cadence, getting the call in, getting to the line, he needs reps in 2 minute even if it's a 2 minute from Parkway West High, etc... that someone who's been in the system doesn't need. Kid even needs reps on his drops and matching his footwork to the route so it's a different beast.

Joint practices where teams are at least playing some medium strength version of the offense and defense are really what's important and McVay has said it repeatedly.

I think the ship has sailed on Ty getting 1st team reps period except maybe as a reward towards end of camp.

Still, as fans, it'll be entertaining to watch him in preseason. I just hope we don't have rush to judgement threads, either way. He's not going to show us he's a franchise QB and he's not going to show us he isn't.

Truth be told, I don't believe there is or was a real battle. I believe the Rams always intended for this to be a real redshirt year for Simpson, and the only way they were going to rush him is if Bennett underwhelmed and they couldn't find a vet.

Or they want Simpson to get reps but aren't pushing him to be #2 by proclamation. Nobody knows but McVay and his assistants.

I still say Simpson is swimming in, and having dreams while he sleeps about, installation, cadence, verbiage, pace, etc. The "long play" if there ever was one. Cant be anywhere NEAR ready.
