They didnt offer him a contract, they didnt offer him a cheap deal that he turned down. They made it clear before free agency that they werent re-signing him. Fans were hoping that they'd at least tag him and then negotiate a long term deal, and that didnt happen.
Fact is, they had 2 opportunities to sign him long term and declined to do so both times. Heck, even after his '21 pro bowl season they gave him the lowest RFA tender and didnt try to sign him long term.
Sorry the facts dont line up for you, but clearly the Rams saw something and were fine with him walking away.
And now more than ever the Rams are proving that they are a step ahead
Kicking in 2023 was lousy. To you moving on from an established kicker only to sign a few random kickers and hope one sticks, was a weak plan, but to you it’s a genius move?

The real reason the Rams moved on was simply because they knew they couldn’t match what he was going to get offered. There is this thing called a salary cap. Why would they offer him a low ball deal when they knew he’d get two or three times that in free agency? And if it was so obvious that he sucked, why did he get a big contract?

This kind of thing plays out every year. It’s odd that you go to such lengths to twist this, so it fits into your narrative.

If that is true, it must have been something outside football since his kicks were a high point during the 2022 season.

Lol.
You crack me up.
The only narrative is the delusional fantasy you want to portray as fact, that somehow it was a mistake that the Rams let him go and that cost wins. Which is entirely false on so many levels.
Alas, I am sticking with the actual facts.
The Rams made no efforts to sign him when he was a FA.
He was only slightly better in Indy year 1 than the Rams, and a huge disappointment at that.
Year 2 he was again a huge disappointment and the Rams rookie was superior
Bottom line, the Rams made the absolute right move in letting him walk
But feel free to keep pushing some nonsensical narrative, I’ll be happy to debunk with facts

Got to agree that Gay kicked himself off of the team because the Rams knew he was going to get a much better offer in FA. There's zero reason for the Rams to even attempt to have offered a contract to him. Typicallu the Rams allow a lot of their free agents find their worth on the open market. My guess is Gay let them know the offer he received and the Rams simply were like, nah, we aren't matching that, hence no offer. Regardless of how it went down, it worked out for both sides. Gay got paid and the Rams ultimately saved money and a bad contract since Gay obviously did worse with the Colts.

When did I say it was a mistake that the Rams didn’t sign him? That’s the fantasy in all of this. It would have been great if they could have, but they weren’t matching the contract.

What rookie was better?

How are you convoluting this whole thing? Kicking was bad in 2023. It was lousy. That’s why they drafted Karty. That’s why all of us wanted them to draft a kicker. Were you in a coma?

Here’s your facts.

He was pretty consistent. 94.1 to 93.3 is not a huge drop off

It’s not true. They just couldn’t pay him as much as other teams were rumored to be ready to offer. That’s all it is
Oh I completely agree with you. I was just giving the point that there was nothing in Gay's performance in 2022 that showed that his ability to make kicks was going to drop off as much as he did in 2023. Unless the Rams had a crystal ball and looked into the future, Gay's performance would have demanded that he be paid as one of the highest paid kickers. The Rams knew that and didn't want to insult Gay by offering him a pittance compared to what other teams were going to offer him. The most that the Rams could offer him due to their CAP situation would have been probably around $2 million. And Gay would have been insulted by that offer. The Rams are one of the best managed teams right now and would never want to insult anyone.

I believe the drop off in 2023 occurred due to his high salary and wanting to prove that he was worth every penny at Indy. And after he missed a couple kicks, it just went downhill from there. With kickers, it's a mental game for the most part if they are going to make a kick or not. Unless they miss kicks in practice frequently, their ability in this day and age to make kicks within the 50 yard line is pretty much a given if they are mentally able to handle the pressure.

How are you convoluting this whole thing?
Dude, you seriously need to stop using words that you dont know what they actually mean
Its simple facts, the Rams chose to not even make an offer in FA, 1 year after offering him the lowest tender amount as an RFA. They made it clear they werent going to re-sign him.
Then they replaced him with a bevy of kickers who produced similar results to what Gay produced in Indy
So making an assertion that they knew what they were doing is not a narrative, nor convoluting
Simple facts

You are projecting way too much of your opinion into this. And was the kicking really just as good with the Maher? I don’t remember that. By the end of the season we were all screaming for the Rams to draft a kicker. Matt Gay got paid. You act like he was the worst kicker in the league. I showed you his stats.

It’s very simple to understand. They didn’t have cap space and weren’t going to make a competitive offer. To say what they ran out on the field in 2023 was just as good is funny. How many times did they change kickers? McVay was afraid to go for field goals most of the season.

Keep posting on it. I’m done discussing it. Your made up points are nonsense.

Great job, but bad positioning by the umpire. Primary job is to make sure the center doesn’t get canned and wasn’t even looking past and watching the kick.

However, he should be lining up off tackle so the back judge and line judge has a clear sight of the ball. Further, you don’t want that happening either.

To wit: I would not offer a contract to a person who I knew had an ask much higher than I am willing to go. I don't have the time to do that shit with everything else on my plate, nor do I imagine the Rams do either. Additionally, to offer a prospect below their ask or way below their ask is insulting to them and reflects poorly on me in my field.

He wants out of Miami just like his wife wants out of their marriage. Wouldn't want his personality anywhere near this team.
Dude, I wouldn't read in to the marriage thing to much. My wife has wanted out of our marriage, about 3-4 days a week on average, and I've been married to her for over 28 years!
