I rate them above a JAG. A JAG is more a below average player. Reeder is a Jag. Rozeboom is a Jag. But Speights was an average LBer.

I think the DBs are solid contributors that fit the overloaded upfront defense that the Rams employ. It’s tough to pay stars at every position.
Fair enough. I agree that average players have their place on the team since it's true that every position can't have an above average performer. I see the DBs as solid contributors too; I need a word like JAG for average players for when I'm feeling lazy.

just wants to cut the best cover corner we had last year

amazing
Just the eye test tells you that D. Will was pretty bad last year.

but the PFF data confirms that as well...

2024 Overall PFF rating

Durant - 95th out of 222
Witherspoon 108th out of 222
Williams 123rd out of 222

Why do you imagine Spoon went unsigned for the third straight year till we picked him up on a 1 year in the 3rd round of FA this year?

Or why do you imagine Durant didn't start over Williams?

We brought Williams back to start and be our #1 CB last year, so of course he would have been higher on the depth chart than Durant.

But at the end of the day Durant out played him last season. Durant has made a habit of out playing guys who were ahead of him...he did it with Kendricks then now Williams.

As for Witherspoon.. hes been our most consistent CB over the last 2 years.

We took a chance with Tredavious White over bringing Witherspoon back, and fortunately for us he was still available when we needed to move on from White.

He played well last year and we've brought him back.

I dunno... I know I'm not the only person who saw Williams struggling last year... im not the only person whose heard his name mentioned as a potential cut candidate.

I mean picking up Emmanuel Forbes... looking at drafting a CB... bringing back Spoon before the draft... all that to me points to Williams being on shaky ground....

And based on last years play he should be

Hopefully it was injury related and he just never got back on track after coming off of injured reserve. If he stays healthy this year, maybe he regains some of his previous form. Or he hit the wall at his age and is cooked.

so why didn't Durant start over Williams at any point last season

and look, corner play is some of the things I'm least knowledgable about but it sure seems like Spoon has been incredibly inconsistent but capable of big plays and THAT is why he's been a street free agent for the past 3 years only picked up by us for pennies

Maybe you're right, I wouldn't put money on it though

Forbes is a huge unknown and frankly scares the shit out of me with his scrawny ass frame. Relying solely on rookies is bad planning. Now if we draft some and we hit to the point where Williams becomes expendable then that's understandable. However I find this scenario completely unlikely since the more CBs we have the better. Besides Williams would make a fine 2/3 CB if we somehow pick some legit CBs in the draft.
So Forbes is going into his 3rd year... he's started 9 games in the NFL. We should remember him falling out of favor was more to do with him not fitting the scheme of the new staff... a staff that didn't draft him... than it had to do with him not playing well.

He's shown an ability to make plays on the ball in the NFL

And yeah... he's slim

. But he's young and with a solid organization... he's working hard in the offseason

Durant started the entire season. He played in 16 games and started 15 of them.

Trust me.. both Spoon and Durant played better than Williams last year.

D will was hurt at the beginning of the season... he had a stretch where he wasn't playing well... Spoon started to come on after having zero training camp being unsigned.

Spoon is our tallest corner and I'd argue his hold on a starting spot is more secure than Williams right now

I like where we are at CB with or without D will assuming we draft a CB with one of our first 2 picks.

PFF rated Witherspoon slightly above Williams but both were solidly average. Durant was rated in the same territory, too. Nothing special about any of our CBs.
Sure, but how did they play as a group near the end of the season?

Not to rain on the parade here but reading your post I think there is a bit of quite of few people forget that Dre’Davious White was a big part of their plans that didn’t work out last year obviously. Williams was supposed to not be the only CB taking the 1’s and I dare say mostly their 2’s.

And on the flip side of that coin, Im feeling a lot of Rams fans are discounting Emanuel Forbes this year. At the worst I’m feeling he’ll be able to contribute as our 4th CB in 5 and 10 packages and dare I say become a decent standin if someone gets hurt on the outside with an off season and time in the culture under his belt.

With a solid CB this draft we could be deep asf at CB when it’s all said and done.

Come on dude, where did he start, he was at nickel (where he split time with Lake), it's a very different position than boundary.

You can't even compare coverage grades from one to the other. If we can't differentiate corner positions, I definitely don't think we can come to an agreement here.

Durant has split time before between boundary and nickel, if Williams was so bad, I'm no sure why Durant couldn't have done it last year (okay, maybe they wanted him to just concentrate on one).

Is the argument that we can't cut Williams cause of the dead money (this is at least somewhat plausible) so we kept him over Spoon and only signed Spoon late into FA cause we could only pay him near vet min and oh look no other team signed him cause he's so good.

If you're right - and hey, maybe you are - then I expect Williams to eventually sit especially if we draft a CB in the 1st or perhaps we trade him like some have suggested.

Happy Spoon is back, he gives us optionality. And there's always a chance he becomes more consistent down to down. There's even a chance Williams is fully healed and is very good next year. We'll see what happens.

PS. You do realize those PFF grades aggregate coverage and run support right?

Again, happy to have Spoon back for the optionally and this is an apples to oranges comparison...

... but Christian Rozeboom got a free agent contract before Witherspoon.

He's not a rookie..

I hate to say it, but until Forbes proves others, folks who are skeptical have every right to be. He hasn't earned starter reps with us yet so to automatically assume he'll be a starter is terrible planning. I'm not saying he can't do it, but mostly saying he needs to prove it with his play. I could care less about potential or a few good plays, he needs to put it together and show consistentency. Now if he does that awesome, but the Rams still should aim to improve the CB room as you can never have enough. Besides we have D. Williams for one more and Witherspoon is also only on a 1 year deal so the need is there. I believe planning as if Forbes isn't going to pan out is how the Rams should approach it. I for one will never root for a Ram to not workout because if he does, its one less position we have to worry about.
