The offense came alive for the Los Angeles Rams in their opening preseason victory over the Dallas Cowboys.
Stetson Bennett turned the corner in his third set of exhibition games, and Cody Schrader
closed out the contest with multiple punishing runs.
These are the highest graded players on each side of the ball for the Rams from Saturday night’s game along with a few other interesting footnotes.
Top five grades on offense
1 - Willie Lampkin, G/C: 94.1
While Schrader will get the credit in the box score for his long, punishing runs towards the end of the game, Lampkin was moving defenders and clearing the path for his running back. The draft community loved Lampkin and he was an oft-discussed name in the spring; however, he’s a historical size outlier and that made him effectively undraftable. That doesn’t mean Lampkin can’t overcome the odds and become a reliable pro, and his NFL debut was a strong first effort in doing so.
Lampkin finished with a 92.2 grade in the run game versus a 78.6 grade in pass protection.
2 - Cody Schrader, RB: 90.8
Despite playing only six snaps and carrying the ball five times, Schrader forced four missed tackles and accumulated 36 yards after contact. The opportunities may have been limited, but he certainly made the most of them. Schrader also added a nine-yard touchdown through the air.
Did Schrader earn more looks over the remaining two exhibition games? The Rams may want to give more rest to Blake Corum and Jarquez Hunter.
3 - David Quessenberry, RT: 87.0
The Rams may need Quessenberry behind Rob Havenstein at some point this season, and he looked the part against Dallas. Quessenberry has always graded positively according to PFF, though in the regular season he’s been closer to average or above average.
4 - Justin Dedich, RG: 81.3
Dedich started multiple games last season when the offensive line was missing a few starters. He played well in those opportunities, although—like Lampkin—he is noticeably undersized. He played 48 of 67 offensive snaps and graded better in the run game (80.6) than in pass protection (66.9).
5 - Stetson Bennett, QB: 79.6
Ronnie Rivers was technically the fifth-highest graded player on offense but played only three snaps. I usually apply a threshold of five snaps before including in this list.
Bennett completed 16 of 24 passes (66.7% completion) for 188 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception. However, PFF attributed Rams receivers with three (!) drops which would move Bennett to an adjusted completion percentage of 82.6%. That is impressive and underscores the turnaround we are seeing from the third year QB.
Bennett finished with one big-time throw and a turnover-worthy play. He converted one first down with his legs as well.
Other notes on offense
The PFF grades were not kind to Blake Corum, who started this game and scored two touchdowns. Corum earned marks in the passing game of 31.3 and in pass blocking of 41.8. He was blamed for a third-down drop that forced the Rams to go for it on fourth down. Corum also allowed a pressure in pass protection in his lone rep.
Pass protection is something that can keep young backs from seeing the field, and this is worth monitoring moving forward.
Top five grades on defense
1 - Cam Lampkin, CB: 83.2
Lampkin secured a beautiful interception of Joe Milton on a long ball to the end zone. He notched a coverage grade of 88.2. This also goes for Charles Woods, as there may be room on the roster to carry another corner after Darious Williams, Cobie Durant, Ahkello Witherspoon, and Emmanuel Forbes (all did not play Saturday). Lampkin is pushing to become the fifth player kept if the Rams opt for more than four.
2 - Charles Woods, CB: 82.3
Woods received a pass coverage grade of 87.4, not too far behind Lampkin. He also had a key pressure on Milton out of two pass rushing reps. It’s worth nothing that 32 of Woods’ 34 reps came from the slot while Lampkin mostly played outside. This could help him in the numbers game ahead of roster cutdowns. Derion Kendrick was the other slot corner who played 26 snaps.
3 - Nate Valcarcel, FS: 78.0
Valcarcel is a name to keep an eye out. It seems the Rams have an undrafted standout safety on a near annual basis. Oddly enough, he was the Rams’ highest graded run defender in this game at 71.1. The defense seemed to struggle in this facet overall.
In coverage Valcarcel was targeted four times and he allowed three catches for 25 yards. He also forced a pass breakup.
4 - Jamil Muhammed, EDGE: 73.0
I did not have Muhammed on my radar coming into this game. He played 16 snaps with 10 coming as a pass rusher. He earned one pressure on those opportunities. Muhammed’s run defense grade was towards the top at 64.7.
5 - Tanner Ingle, FS: 71.3
Ingle has hung around the Rams’ roster since 2023 and he often grades well in the exhibition games.
Other notes on defense
Rookie third-round pick Josaiah Stewart only ranked 11th overall on defense; however, he was far and away LA’s best pass rusher on the night with a grade of 75.8. He earned a pressure on 14 snaps. His grade was lower because of a 45.3 mark in pass coverage, which may make him a fitting replacement for Michael Hoecht.
