That game was for what, 200 yards? Folks were crowning him as the next Marshall Faulk after that! lol
Against the jets IIRC and they could not stop the run so Martz just kept running almost like he forgot about the passing game, which just wasnt needed that day. 1 of the very few games that Martz flipped the script and ran the ball like he forgot about the passing game.

It’s Marshall, then Jackson, the Gurley for me. If Gurley had a 10 year run, it would be Gurley in the number 1 spot in everyone’s list.
You obviously did not watch Dickerson run. Must be pretty young.
If these kids had any idea of just how many 10-12 yard runs he had.................. where the last defender got him. He gets past that guy, GONE .
He was that good. He did it with no passing game and all the attention on him.

Willie Ellison wasn’t bad. Rushed for 247 yards against the Saints in 1971. It was televised in my area and it was great fun to watch.

And Tyler probably had the most fumbles per carry, swinging the the ball in traffic like he did! My gut still clenches when remembering him carry the ball!
Or as my dad used to say “He’s carrying it like a loaf of bread!”

Its ridiculous to have Kyren and Blake on this list.
No Lawrence McCutcheon ?
He was the Rams all time leading rusher at some point !
Dickerson broke his record.

I started with the Rams when McCutcheon was the main guy, so I have some love for him. I remember the 1976 season where Clutch and Cappy both led the league in rushing after the 1st 2 games (vs ATL & MIN).

But overall it's tough to choose between AD and Faulk. Edge goes to AD for the breakaway ability/speed and the still standing season rushing record and playoff record over the field general all around Faulk who brought us a title. I hate ties so will go with Eric.

Yeah many others used that term for him while he was playing. Probably first coined by some TV announcer.

The term might have even gone back to the great Jim Brown. But Tyler held it out like it was a nerf football.

A bit before my time, what was the feeling among the fan base when we moved on from him so early on?

Was the feeling positive, negative or mixed? I only remember Bettis as a Steeler. I just don’t hear a lot of chatter about him one way or the other

I hated the Dickerson trade, plain an simple. Even briefly considered disowning the Rams but I stuck it out with them.
They got Greg Bell in the trade, who was decent, but he surely was not in Dickerson's class. To make matters worse the FO mostly wasted the picks they received.

Georgia was too cheap to the pay the man. It is interesting to think about what might have been if ED had stayed.

Thanks for the video, I’m glad you posted it. Scooter went on to do color commentary with Bob Starr on radio for the Rams. BTW his high school stats at Vallejo high were insane. Something like 2 touchdowns average per 12 minute quarter over 16 games when underclassmen didn’t play. Drafted number 2 overall after leading the nation in rushing at what would become UOP, then College of the Pacific.

It's OK. I'm to blame here ... not you.

It's an Old Guy Thing. We don't want to be forgotten; and, by extension, we don't want the things and people that were important to us in our youth to be forgotten.

Now ...

I’m sorry, my math was bad. 68 touchdowns in 16 games, a little over 1 touchdown per quarter.

I voted for Marshall because of his game day IQ, his overall offensive impact with the GST era team, and the many ways that he could, and did beat you.
But Eric Dickerson was the best pure running back that I may have ever seen play. He would either run through you, or get the edge on you, or just flat out run the entire defense.
ED was was an amazing talent and a great watch on his high lights reels.

P.S. Would definitely appreciate any posts on Rams experience and memories that you have back in the day in the past.

Part of the reason I'm a member here with mostly older members (I'm 44) is exactly this. As a fan there is a ton of older generations with interesting and valuable Rams information that will sadly eventually be lost.

Anything you impart on us younger members can be passed on to more Rams fans and younger generations which means your experiences and unique impressions can continue on as part of us, which in turn mean you continue on.

Similar to that part in FMJ, not exact, but the concept is:

Faulk (All purpose back and coach on the field)
Dickerson (best pure runner ever)
Steven Jackson (Top 5 best bruising big back of all time)
Gurley (home run threat in a big body… only guy bigger and faster was Bo Jackson)

Also, shout out to Capelletti… meatball of a running back, loved him back in the day

I remember Charles White as a great RB from USC (Running Back U.), who sort of flopped in the NFL. John Robinson was his HC at USC and who reclaimed Charles White from the trash heap and he became a good change of pace RB for the Rams in the 80's. For you, @Corbin

I see he had a pretty decent season in 1987 with 1374 yds 11td's on 12 starts.

why did we move away from White? I seen the next year he only started 3 games and picked up Greg Bell? Were we just doing running back by committee back then?

Agree here are the top 4 quite obvious to new & old.

  1. Marshall Faulk....Could do it all
  2. Eric Dickerson...To what could have been even better
  3. Lawrence McCutcheon...Consistent & Durable plus great team player.
  4. Steven Jackson....Too bad the Rams were just not very good during his tenure.
